NY's Turboed Elantra!

Hey everyone, my name is Justin. I'm from Long Island (and im proud of it. haha) anyway i own a 2002 Hyundai Elantra GT, Rally Red, 5spd, Turbo! i've had the turbo in since october but had alot of problems. i guess thats expected when you try and turbo a hyundai. Just got it up and running yesterday and should have a dyno tune by next week. Im a Surfer, Snowboarder and Hockey fannatic. not a street racer by any means, i enjoy working on the car and going to the track. i've had this car for a little over 2 years and put about 11k into it, only paid 6k for it. I took 1st place at Hot Import Nights this past summer at Belmont Race Track and recently wont Car of the Year on Crookedh.com im not even close to done modding this thing, next is a CF hood, then the interior. maybe a 2tone paint job. who knows.... i cant wait for spring!

I get tuned next week, so i'll have dyno #s then. as for 1/4 miles, since i lean out around 5psi, i havent gone to the track witht the turbo. i went to Etown before the turbo install and had 3 terrible runs. spun the tires every launch. my best was a 15.9 but like i said spun them pretty good. stock this car as 118whp, i dyonoed 152whp and 151wtq. im hoping to get to around 215whp with the turbo hopefully more

im lookin for new rims, these were cheap and went with the whole black/red theme. but they were ebay wheels and with a 2" drop they are bashed up. thanks for the props, i enjoy having a different car. if i did this to a civic (no offense) it would just be another turboed civic.

The reason i am doing this to a hyundai is not cuz i like the car. i used to have a 1990 2dr jetta and loved it. thats the first car i started modding. then i had a daughter and the 2dr cop magnet was working. i bought a 1991 jetta GLI to be a little safer but the car was a lemon... nothing but problems. so i wanted a reliable econobox, found the GT hatch elantra and it was safe (front and side airbags) as well as practical (as a surfer/snowboarder, the hatch is awsome for road trips and fitting all the boards and crap inside). so i had an 01 elantra gt for about a year and i wrapped it around a telephone pole coming home from work at 3am (fell asleep at the wheel). well i totaled the car and walked away without a scratch. got my insurance money and bought the same car that saved my life. plus its got leather, sunroof, power everything. i went 3 years without needing a mechanic, then i blew my motor cuz i was modding it and beating on it.

thanks for the compliments guys, alot of people hate on it cuz its a hyundai. after the tune i cant wait to shut people up! haha. the turbo is the same size as the stock WRX turbo (just FYI). i cant believe i didnt join this forum earlier, i've been modding for a few years now

i dont like the muffler...thats about it, otherwise its definately not a typical car to mod, and all the more power to you for it, looks good. GL

Thanks...... yea im looking into having a custom 3" turboback exhaust done. if i do i'll definately choose a better looking muffler. but i like how it sounds and looks sleeper/almost stock. before the turbo that muffler was awsome cuz it gave the car a nice deep sound

The shift boot was custom made by a member of the ElantraClub.

Cluster? the guages are dash gauges are stock, the multigauges under the dvd player are stock in Korean Tibs. and the Window switches and HVAC were customized by a member of Elantraxd.com. not sure if that helps


as for whether or not its fast.... that will be determined next week when i get dyno tuned at 8psi.

and do they seriously have a hyundai elantra forum? How wide of a wheel can I fit on one? I'm about to run 16x8.5 lol

ummmmmmmmmm..... thats a little crazy. im dropped 2" and i fit a 17x7.5 rim but i needed to roll the fender. i've heard of 18"s on the elantra, but they werent dropped and they were 18x7.

the cluster like mine is only for 01-03 GT... the 04-06 GT is different, but better than any year GLS.

Yea, it would be good to have another meet with that many cars, and another magazine shoot. maybe this summer we can have it in a better location. I really want to organize a legit meet/show on long island, but dont have the time or patients to take that under my wing. i want to try and do something where we can have a meet/show at a Hyundai Dealer on long island..... we'll see

just found out its a no go for thursday. im so pissed! i got the unichip (piggyback) cuz my local shop is an authorized tuner for them and now im stuck waiting. they just got the software last week and the guy Adam who tunes the cars has to read the manual and test it on a truck the shop owns first. on top of that they are just finishing an enclosure around the dyno so its not just in the middle of the shop. so by the time thats done and the dyno is up and running again, hes booked up for dyno runs and then he can start playing with the unichip software. so it will be at least another 2 weeks before im tuned. This sucks

I love it! first it was a little rough for a DD (mainly it was getting used to the new clutch and the 7.5lb flywheel) it would catch instantly. that thats its got alot of miles on it, its awsome.
