i use the walmart brand... its not the best gram per scoop ratio but it tastes alright and its cheap.

ive tried a bunch and honestly i just use GNC chocolate caramel. it tastes good and its cheap and u get like 24grams of protein per scoop.
if you are trying to bulk up, look into muscle milk. its got some extra fat and calories in it, but its the "good fat" that you want. its a little on the expensive side though. if you can wait, you should defintly try to order online, its ALOT cheaper.

great post workout mix. fast absorbing whey proteins in conjunction with high glycemic carbs will help with recovery. drink this right after workouts.
muscle milk, its the best tasting shake out there, tastes almost like a real milkshake.

do a little research about muscle milk. that stuff is terrible for you.
heres a link i found : http://www.t-nation.com/readTopic.do?id=1231523
i recommend just a pure whey protein, stay away from those chemical enhanced shakes. whey protein is cheap, safe, and tastes good with milk and strawberries/banannas.
i tried muscle milk though, and i gotta say, the cookies and cream is delicious.

muscle milk all the way. I put on 12 lbs of good weight from september to now using it. In the same time frame I went from 12% body fat to 10.8%.
I took whey protein after my workout and run and muscle milk at night. I mixed the muscle milk with 2 teaspoons of natural peanut butter and a banana.

I usually order 10lbs of ON (Optimum Nutrition) 100% whey online as well as some Casein for before bed. With the cost of corn going up the protein prices have been driven up considerably. ON is a good bang for the buck protein and tastes pretty good.
Don't rely too much on shakes though, spend your money on good quality food. I personally avoid muscle milk. Without knowing the rest of your diet it is tough to recommend everything else. Maybe some glutamine for recovery and some BCAA's during the workout.

muscle milk = blah. tastes good, but there are better (and cheaper) alternatives out there. I know you're asking about protein powders. but what does your diet look like? like the macro breakdown and what sources of food the protein/carb/fat come from. because you can have the "best" protein supplement out there, but without a solid diet, you're screwed.

I've tried NO Xplode. Actually, I have half a bottle left and it's probably time to toss it since it won't be getting used. The NO Xplode is just too sweet (I have lemon-lime), and I really didn't notice much of a boost in anything energy wise.
Anyway, I'm drinking my ON 100% whey right now. I'm pissed that i can't find Rocky Road anymore (discontinued i guess), now I just get the regular chocolate (bland). However, I never did notice a difference between drinking my protein shakes and not drinking them. I guess I get enough protein through my diet where I just **** out the extra anyway.

Get a recipe for a homemade protein shake.
Men's Health magazine usually has one or two.
I'll look for one.....
edit: This is a post-work out shake
Chocolate Almond Recovery Shake
The carbs in this shake trigger a hormonal surge that drives
nutrients into your muscle cells speeding their growth.
They also replenish engery stores, ensuring you'll perform your
best at your next work out.
1/2 cup milk
1 Tbsp instant coffee
10 unsalted almonds
1 Tbsp lecithin granules
2 packets (2 g) stevia or other sugar alternative
1 cup crushed ice or 6-8 ice cubes
2 level scoops chocolate whey protein powder
How to make:
Pull all of the ingredients except the ice and the protein powder
into a blender. Blend on high until fully mixed. With the blender on
medium, add the ice and the protein powder.
Increase the speed to high and blend until smooth.
Makes 1 serving.
Per serving:
393 calories
47g protein
24g carbohydrates
10g fat (1.5g unsaturated)
2g fiber
55mg sodium

I rolled the dice on Chocolate Mint and its not bad. It smells just like Andes mints, totally delicious. However it tastes like... whey protein.

Stay AWAY FROM MUSCLE MILK!!!!
Muscle Milk contains the potentially dangerous chemical glycocyamine, which can lead to cardiovascular diesease. Tastes good bud real bad for you, lotta calories, but prohormones are a heck of alot safer to take than this crap(not promoting them tho).
If you want to bulk up, do a bulking phase, and during this time cut back on the dancing a bit. Ideally you should have an 8 hour break between cardio and strength training, and really, no more than an hour at a time during strength training, because your body will not be able to recover quite as good, as if you were doing one or the other.
I highly reccomend looking at AST's MAXOT training program, its free, and no b/s. You strength goes up insane amounts if you follow this program to a "T"!
I've been lifting on and off for 4 years, and the gains you make are pretty sweet. Just quick personal note, i started with 55db's for my bench 6 months ago, and was hitting the 95's for 3 sets of 6 when i stopped lifting two months ago. I had previously only been hitting 70's as a max rep a few years ago.
For protein, i'd reccomend optimum nutritions 100% whey, chocolate mint is good, as is the double chocolate. whey protein is a "quick" protein, best taken within 45 minutes of a solid workout.
Casein protein is protein found in milk products and is a "long term" protein(distributed over a period of several hours). I'd reccomend cottage cheese, eaten with some fruit, the combo of natural fiber, non-processed protein, and natural sugars are ten times better than any powder you cna buy. And a heck of alot cheaper too. Stick with atural proteins when ever you can; eggs, chicken, pork, tuna fish, turkey. Stay away from processed meats, like ham, deli meats, and the like. Lotta fresh fruits and veggies as well.
I dunno if i can post the link to the maxot, just do a search for "MAXOT pdf" on google.
On the NOX, NOexplode products, not worth the hype. Good for someone who has never picked up a weight before, but they can have some funny side effects.

I'm going to have to vote against anyone taking this as a "post-work out" shake. I'd add more high glycemic carbs to help with protein absorption. and cut out the slow-digesting protein (ones found in milk). and cut out the fats (found in the almonds and milk, if it's anything beside nonfat) which will cause a slow down in digestion.
I would suggest like what charlie brown said and eat eat eat!

most of those "weight gainers" are buckets of low quality protein and high glycemic carbs. while it's good for a post-work out shake, it's hardly a sound option to replace a meal with.

I use mostly ON stuff. 1 1/2 cups of milk, 2 scoops whey, banana, peanut butter, some honey, good ****. It's also a good idea to eat a lot of glycose after a hard workout, you can do sucrose (table sugar) as well but you'll need considerably more for the body to get the same results out of it.

having 10 freakin almonds is not gonna break a diet up and in fact is good for you.
i think that recipe sounds decent.
IMO the best protein shake for you is the one you can ENJOY. make some calls to manufacturers and buy individual packets or get samples from a local shop. ignoring all the fancy terms like "bioavailable, glycemic index blah blah blah" it only works if you will actually enjoy it so you keep it from collecting dust on the shelf.

well I guess I have to agree that for the average person, taste will help someone keep on track with drink protein shakes. but, imo, if someone is 100% dedicated to changing their body image for bodybuilding, powerlifting, or just for their own satisfaction, they eat what they eat because it puts them closer to their goal, not because it tastes good.
and you're right, 10 almonds is not that big a deal.

I go nuts on N.O. xplode. The one time I took two scoops just to see and i started going nuts. I was yelling and running around like a crazy person. Fliped out on my sister because she was sleeping and i wanted to play my music loud. She pulls out her phone to call moms and i was like "WHATS SHE GONA DO SHES NOT HERE AAAHHHHH!!!" haha it was halarious as we look back on it. I personally like the taste of the orange cream alot and that gave me the most energy and the fruit punch is good too but it just doesnt give me the pump like the orange cream somehow.
I also take sizeon now (since christmas) i think that works really good since its a tasty drink (mixed with similar flavor gaterade). It helps out alot and you can even size while you sleep if you take it before bed haha. Creatine Gluconate is in it.

I'm curious here...what makes someone a "power lifter"? Do you do competitions of just the 3? Or is it a self-proclaimed thing? We had another thread where people were posting their max bench. At 5'9" 172 I can put up 315. If I gain another 30-50 pounds or more in a 1-2 year period, and I can bench the same as you, will that make me a power lifter? Or does it just make me someone that can bench 435 pounds?
Or do power lifters go for actual weight of lifts, while bodybuilders go for the "look"?

your last statement is correct
powerlifters also follow different training regimens from bodybuilders.

and thats a good bench- powerlifting also requires strict form to consider a valid lift (i.e. bench would be touch chest PAUSE, then back up)

you're a powerlifter? what are your stats?
I'm a fellow azn powerlifter with a max bench of 435
hah, I'm not that strong. 305 bench, 395 squat, 405 deadlift. :o
Or do power lifters go for actual weight of lifts, while bodybuilders go for the "look"?
powerlifters.. people who compete or train to compete in powerlifting competitions.
bodybuilders.. people who compete or train to compete in bodybuilding competitions.
that's all I make of it.

That lift seemed like a normal lift, but the guy arched his back. Is that considered valid in powerlifting? I might have it backwards, but I thought that in weight lifting (olympic style) you can arch your back, while in power lifting you have to have your back flat????

hhaahah that video is me btw
anyways my back is (relatively speaking) not arched, since powerlifters arch is completely.
the arching help lessen the distance from the top to the bottom of the lift
the only main rules are:
butt must stay on bench,
feet can't move
hands must be certain space apart
must lift the bar when they say "lift" or "press" (depends on federation)

 yea, for workout music, you basically need hard-hitting euro-dance music.... nothing else does the job really. Search around on itunes for "euro club hits" or check this link::supz: http://electricfilebox.com/tracks

I'd like to add to igo4bmx's post..
blkwhttsi, the food choices igo4bmx posted are great.. another key factor in wanting to lose or gain weight is how much you eat and how much of what you eat. and this is all dependent on your goals.. how heavy would you like to get? because my belief is, "if you want to be 200 pounds, you have to eat like you're 200 pounds"
and if you want to "body build", you'd better get rid of those two 35lb dumbbells and get yourself a gym membership. join a body building forum, and read up on proper weight lifting techniques and build yourself a routine

to begin, how old are you and in what context? from a body building standpoint? from a power-lifting standpoint? or just against the average john doe?

21, so I guess lets say average joe, main focus at the gym being looks and definition with strength and power being the latter.

well against the average for a 5' 9.5" 175lb male from 20-29 years of age is 180lbs.. given you are quite a deal taller than 5' 9.5", that max on average may be lower (~165lb) because your longer limbs are a disadvantage to your max bench numbers
