Well, someone suggested I start a journal... so here I am. Before I talk about the build up, lets get through the story (you can skip this if you want)...

I have always wanted a Supra ever since I could remember. I guess it all started when I was around 11 or 12 and I played NFS 1:SE on the computer. It had all sorts of sports cars, but I fell in love with the Supra. I probably didn't really care much about cars back then, but as I got older I really started liking the car. It's pretty funny, there's never a day where I don't talk about the Supra. I have always wanted a 1997 Royal Sapphire Pearl TT 6 speed. There are only 31 of those in the US (including the 98s), so I knew my chances were pretty low. My AIM sn before I got my Supra was/is SUPRAman97TT. Fast forward to last May... I just graduated college, and the Supra dream was getting closer and closer. Despite all the damn student loans, living on your own, expenses, savings, etc., I had to get one. They were not getting any cheaper. So as a pretty conservative guy, I was aiming to purchase one Spring 2008. I have seriously contemplated on picking up an STi or Evo. I love those cars. Plus, they can be my DD- good in the snow, 4 doors, pretty good room, quick. Also, you can pick them up pretty cheaply, especially a couple year old ones. My gf told me that if I don't get my Supra, I'll always be a grumpy, whiny, little biatch.

So the hunt was on. For the same amount of money I could spend on a 2005 Sti/Evo, I can only find 1993-94 Supra TT 6spd with high miles. So I decided to wait until spring. But then, I found a Deep Jewel Green, 100% perfectly stock 97 TT from CA. The price was higher than I wanted to spend, miles were pretty high, plus I really did not want to fly there and check it out. The great thing about supraforums is that people know other people, so I was informed from many members that the seller was honest, they've driven in the car, and the conditions he reported was accurate. After he and I negotiated, we determined a way to not screw each other over, and the deal was done. I had the car shipped here, and picked it up Nov 14 in NJ.

There she was- my dream car. I sat in, all the gauges were facing me- exactly like a c0ckpit. My gf who was sitting in a driver's car. I was a little weary because I've never driven a car like this before. This supposed "320" bhp (we'll get to that later) car had nearly three times the power of my corolla. I started the engine. She had a nice rumble. She drives like a normal car for the most part, until you just floor it...HOLY SH*T. You feel the first turbo kick in, and then around 4800 rpm the second one just plasters you to the seat. It was pretty intense. My first fill up in NJ became an interview. The guy was asking me all about it, where'd I get it, how fast it is, etc. I told him, "I really don't know how fast she is. I just got her today!" So now I know those supra guys in the forums weren't kidding. This car is an attention whore- not from girls, but from guys.

Fast forward the story to today. Recent encounters have been pretty crazy. I've had people literally standing out of their car's windows screaming "OMFG it's a Supra!!" Ummm shouldn't you be watching the road? lol But yes I am very happy. No regrets. Everyday is like Christmas. I still have to pinch myself once in a while to realize I really do own my dream car. I can go on and on, but you guys are bored, so lets get to the good stuff

im glad to hear your happy! I could only dream to own a supra, lol. Good luck with it!

Do you have any plans for it?

The car is 100% stock. Here are some of the pics:

I dyno'd my car on a dyno dynamics during my first Supra meet/dyno.. People joked about my stocker. They said they couldn't hear it. Of course not, there were 700 hp cars at the meet!

Here's the sheet 302 rwhp- not bad for a stocker!

Plan right now is BPU. I would love to get 400 at the wheels. This seems doable since it seems like I have a healthy stocker :) I know I need a front mount, but that would have to come later. They're expensive!

I have half of the parts:

Greddy Boost Cut Controller
RMM downpipe
ngk plugs
stillen 52 mm boost gauge

Need:
Quiet, high performing exhaust: looking at hks super dragger or blitz nur spec
O2 simulator: damn obd2
Electronic or Manual boost controller with c0ckpit adjust

the downpipe sitting in my kitchen
http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh235/SUPRAman97TT/My%20Supra/1106071740.jpg

Today was the first official day of modding. Took off the exhaust, and the catted downpipe. I just hope I have enough time because I have also started pursuing grad school while working full time. It's all worth it since the company pays for it haha

awesome... i keep hearing the car is an attention whore from guys too (not girls!) haha...

my supra doesnt even run but i've already experienced it myself. pretty much as soon as i handed the check over and officially became the owner of mine we were waiting down the street for the pickup truck. this kid looked like he was casing the car about to steal it. i felt a little uncomfortable and said something to rich (from fuzion auto, who was with me to check out the car because he is the man) and he just kinda laughed, told me the kid wasnt stealing the car, he was just checking it out and that its something i better start getting used to. its kinda crazy, but i like it :).

I am a fan of the MKIV but I don't quite understand people's reactions to the car. Maybe I have just been around enough of them and I am not as excited. I dunno. I like them, especially with a front lip, a drop, RMM spoiler, and some wheels but I could never see myself hanging out of a window yelling OMG ITS A SUPRA!!!!!

I'm the same way... seen it plenty of times.

When I was like 16, 7 years ago and Rich from Fuzion first came around in his Supra and did massive burn outs, i was like "OMG SOOPRUHHH!!!!"

But now.. 6 years later... I love them still, but it's not the holiest of cars. R34 GT-R FTMFW.

Nice car, good luck with the modding!

Thanks for all of the comments. I was not trying to imply that scenes like that happen all the time. The Supra does seem to attract more attention than a corvette or an STi, etc. Part of it I think is the rarity- WTF was that? I think over the years the Supra has become well known among car enthusiast for its performance capabilities and that is why most car people (exotic, muscle, tuner) at least appreciate the Supra. I'll have to take some pics today so you can see a couple me getting down and dirty lol

And Troll, you have to come to some of the Supra meets when you get that thing running!!

I really hope to see you guys in some of the meets in the spring

I decided to get a gauge pod (still debating what to put for the third one):
http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh235/SUPRAman97TT/My%20Supra/100_1565.jpg

dirty exhaust on a dirty car, it's 130 mm tip, 95 mm piping, pretty big, but doesn't look bad at all. The stock tip was 100 mm. And it is flush with the body of the car- HKS Super Drager

+1. Great suggestion.

I love Supras. Even N/As are fun. If I go out of state or to an area that I don't visit often, I get the guys (and some girls) coming up to me asking me about my car. It feels good though because all the years I talked to people about THEIR cars, now I can finally talk to people about MY car and have fun doing it.

Nice mods so far. I love that color to death.

nice, coming along... what kind of fmic did you go with?

on the off chance you're interested, i'm selling my xs power manifold, its 61mm turbo, and act street disc clutch. its a good start on a turbo kit ;)
or if you have any questions about building a turbo kit or a fuel system let me know, i've done a lot of research the past few months and can probably help you save a few bucks and a few headaches.

I went with HDi (from Australia). Quality is pretty good and fairly inexpensive. They are well known in Oceania. I'd post their website, but I can't get to it at work lol.

I don't know what I want for my turbo yet, but I only want 550 rwhp on pump gas. So I might go with some sort of 67mm turbo.

I love the stock look, but I may get rims and suspension. However, the stock susp is awesome already. Oh and since getting this car last November, I have logged 8000+ miles :) and that is with the Corolla as the daily.

Holy miles!!! I kept mine under 5,000 so I could get an emissions exemption (a big plus considering a 4 inch turbo back exhaust )

Looking good. I think you've made good choices on the parts so far. That Intercooler looks pretty big compared to my 3 row. How's the car feel with the BPU parts in compared to stock?

As far as turbo's go...61mm is too small for your goals. My BL67dbb does 494whp@19psi. Keep in mind if you try to get to 550whp you'll need fuel also, AND on pump gas it would be pushing it without methanol. 550whp on pump is probably more along the lines of a 70+mm turbo in the 16-19psi range on pump.....or possibly a 67 with a decent cam & supporting mods.

Have you gotten to ridden in a single turbo supra yet?

Well, the PHR street kit is only a 60 or 61mm turbo and they say you can get 500whp @ 18 psi on stock fuel. I really want a quick spooling turbo, and want to hold off on the fuel until I have enough money for it. So if I keep it around 450-475 it is plenty. No, I have not been in a single turbo Sup yet, but I bet it's pretty nuts. I know I have driven the car a lot, but it's my dream car so what's the point of it sitting in a garage? lol. And no emissions exception here in NY :( But I do have the hookups :)

TROLL
09-03-2008, 02:00 PM
Yeah it seems that hitting the 600 whp mark on pump gas is nearly impossible with any sized turbo... its just nearly impossible to make it happen on 93 octane. I was a little surprised to read this, but it seems to be the truth. Just an octane limitation, regardless of the setup. 500 whp on stock fuel is also going to be pretty hard to reach but some guys claim to be there (lots of guys claim lots of things which arent true too of course).

I think the 450ish number on a 61mm and stock fuel is a reasonable expectation, and hey if it does better then thats a bonus :).
Stock fuel + meth could be a pretty sweet combo if the idea of meth doesn't scare you (only people who dont know enough about it dont like it).
Or, if you're interested I can guide you with a very complete guide on how to build your own aftermarket fuel setup start to finish for about $1100 (subtract $200 after selling your stock fuel stuff). No corners are cut, its basically the same exact thing you'll find as a package from PHR or BL, just without the "Supra Owner Price Inflation" added in. Its more affordable than you'd think, if you know how to do it .
Either way, everyone says that a 61mm spools as fast or faster than the stock twins so I'm sure you wont have an issue with spool on the car if you go that route :).

I honestly have no idea where to expect to end up with my 67 and upgraded fuel... probably low to mid 500's on pump. I'm definitely considering adding meth to see where that will get me and not even worrying about race gas, but its kind of pointless to try and predict the future of a car that has an empty engine bay right now, haha.

Yeah I did some 2-3-4 gear pulls in my Subaru this week which is just under 400 whp and 2nd and 3rd were wild... it just made me think "HFS... what is 600 whp like, especially with RWD? Can that even exist?" Haha... I'm a noob and down the road when I have a 600+ whp car I hope I come back and find this post and laugh at myself for being noob status.

Every now and again someone hits 600 whp on 93 octane with aftermarket fuel, but it doesnt sound like its very common... seems to be a bit of a wall there. Just what I've read on the internet though so take it for what its worth

I think 600rwhp on pump is very doable with enough fuel/big enough turbo. I've seen so many guys on sf run that, but they do have every mod imaginable. And yes bryan I'll take you up on the fuel system offer later when I get more money lol. This is gonna be a winter project so I'm just enjoying my bpu in sequential right now. I'm going up to Lake George this weekend for that big msucle car show/rally. There's gonna be a lot of racing there, so hopefully I can shut up some of those more ignorant muscle car owners. :)

hey you should probably change your "my ride" information now that you have the supra. i was wondering why you put the boost gauge in the furthest pod? i'm not trying to to make fun or anything, just an honest question. when i was positioning the gauges on my 240 i figured i would keep the boost gauge closest to me so i wouldn't have to take my eyes off the road too long to look at it. i'm not telling you what to do or anything like that, i'm jsut saying that the boost gauge seems to be covered a little bit by the A/F gauge and might make it harder to see.

Those gauges were just temporary. I am moving them around this winter with the new AEMs you see above. Actually, none of the gauges are blocked when I look at them. It's pretty good. I'll take more pics when I progress. Eh, I don't put "Supra" as one of my cars, because I don't like people thinking I'm the arrogant asshole Supra owner, thinking he's hot ****. I'm actually pretty cool. I've been to many meets where people are like "can we get a ride?" oh i'm so jealous of the 'plug and play' kit... i'm going nuts with each little thing i have to do for mine, ugh.
anyway, thats pretty sweet. i've heard the cast manifolds do really well for mid level hp, just not as 'cool' so most dont get them.
when are you planning to install? and do you have fuel? if not and you want to get it the vendor on here fuel injector clinic has a really affordable setup, i can help you make a complete high quality fuel setup for about half of what the big companies sell theirs for (with some assembly required).

I am gonna install this sometime in December. I just got such a good deal for it. The manifold is already ported, and ceramic coated, which is AWESOME! Plus it's a genuine turbonetics. I'd rather spend my money on something else like fuel instead of the manifold. Fuel will be later, probably sometime in the spring. I'm gonna run the MAF and stock ecu for now @ wastegate of 14psi. I know the a/r might be a bit small, but I want response. Cams and standalone will have to come later next year. I just want 500+ on pump, and 650+ on race, somewhere in between with pump and meth. I'm gonna run dual densos. It seems like installing the pump is a biotch for our cars. Not 100% sure though. Turbo and wastegate has less than 1000 miles. And it shows. Everything else is brand new! I got it for such a steal. I'll PM you what I got it for Bryan

youll get everything you want out of that 67 im running a 68 and i make 556 on pump and itll be easy 600+ on racegas. im running twin walbros(sp?) and it wasnt to hard to install, but the dual densos bryan seemed to have a hard time getting them to sit right. youll have fun with it congrats!

I hope you have a heated garage, or a decent space heater. Its gonna be cold. Good luck with the build.

wow man... great to see you are moving along now that school is over.

I cant wait to actually boost my car. Your beginning story is much like mine with wanting the car for a long time and finally getting one!

Good luck. Cant wait to see what the future brings.

I'm jealous, your interior looks like it's in MINT condition. Keep it that way and roll down in the spring/summer sometime for a meet. Maybe when we do the big Sonic run? All the Supras will have to meet up and cruise together.

I don't. LOL. My friend bought it with a blown motor (he thought/was told it was a blown turbo). He bought a new built motor, but something is wrong as it was leaking coolant through engine bolts.

I hope you have a heated garage, or a decent space heater. Its gonna be cold. Good luck with the build.
Thanks

Yeah, I'm actually only taking one class next semester as opposed to 2 this past semester so I have some time to go to the gym and work on the car! I work full time as an engineer and many workdays are closer to 10 hours than 8.

I promise to make a meet next year. My interior is not mint at all. I have some nicks and scratches in the interior dash pieces, so I am going to sand them and paint it (not sure what color yet)

Thanks for all the comments!

I have three AEM gauges going in- Tru Boost, Oil/water temp gauge, and A/F. I'm resanding those pieces and figuring out what color I want. Probably stick with something classy like black or gray or something. I'm changing all the dash lighting to LEDs. Thats about it.
