There used to be a thread - I forget where - of people posting their intercoolers. If you guys have pics of them on the vehicle and maybe how they are plumbed, I am looking for some ideas. I will post my intercooler later as I might get laughed at.

"how they are plumbed" depends hugely on what car. On a '95 Supra it's pretty straightforward, turbo on one side of the motor and intake on the other, so turbo out goes to IC, out the other side of IC to throttle body; keep it short and minimal volume while not adding too much pressure drop. I don't think I have a good pic but will soon.

My FMIC is from Extreme Turbo Systems in Washington, very nice knowledgeable people who answer questions and speak fluent American; the IC core is 26"W X 10"H X 3-1/2"thk, 31"L with end tanks, 34-1/2" nozzle to nozzle; 3" nozzles in/out.

How much hp is that 26x10x3.5" rated for?

I have a 26x18x4" core on my car, total size is 31 or 32x18x4", trying to figure how much it'll be good for.

I am trying to mount mine with the inlets up top, so my IC pipe comes off my turbo (top mount BMW) direct to the intercooler, intercooler to throttle body, without ever going into the bumper. We'll see!

totally overkill for stock twins but i'll do it justice in time.

How much hp is that 26x10x3.5" rated for?

I have a 26x18x4" core on my car, total size is 31 or 32x18x4", trying to figure how much it'll be good for.

Of course I see hp numbers associated with intercoolers, but to me that seems mostly deceptive and propagates the sale of oversized intercoolers for what I'm interested in, throttle response on a roadcourse. I think if you're drag racing, you really can't oversize the intercooler since throttle response is a negligible factor. So how much hp an intercooler is good for in my view depends on how long it takes to heat soak it ...so if I don't heat soak it during the track session, it's big enough for me. Based on my experience and observations of guys tracking cars with larger IC's, I also didn't want to block airflow to the radiator as much as the typical Greddy 3 and 4 row IC's used on Supras, so this one allows channeling more air around it.

For comparison
Greddy 3 row core is 23.6" X 11.8" X 3.9"
Greddy 4 row core is 23.6 X 11.8 X 5.2
Blitz FMIC core is 24 X 10.5 X 4
and all of the above have been frequently used on Supras making over 700whp and my setup is max'ing out a tad over 600whp at max boost, and on a roadcourse I run lower boost and under 550whp.

Thanks 95 but I think fundamentally a core is rate in hp ability, as it can flow CFM @ X psi with surface area it should have a ballparked horsepower figure tagged to it

If those sizes are good for 700 whp I imagine mine will be more than fine.

sorry for going just a little OT but the original owner of the supra did road race it as a part of the SCCA. basic mods, stock turbo, but the biggest fmic available and a blitz twin disk clutch. kinda strange but whatever...

scutzi128
01-08-2008, 03:27 PM
Any chance there was a different turbo setup on it at one time?

TROLL
01-08-2008, 03:35 PM
i thought about that but its a big pain in the ass to take out the stock turbos, and even more of a pain in the ass to put them back in, so it is pretty unlikely although i guess anything is possible. he did say he had them rebuilt / upgraded but there really is no upgrade for them as far as i've been able to tell (except for one guy recently who is shoving gt30r wheels in them! haha...)

Yea there would really be no point that I could see to take them off and put them back on.
