I am looking at getting one for myself as an x-mas gift, but I want to hear some feedback from anyone who has one. I checked the Eee forums, but they are all fanboys and don't want to say anything bad about them.

It comes with a Linux OS that Asus customized, but you can load XP, or buy it with XP

It has 2 options...8GB HDD and 1gb ram, 4GB HDD and 512mb ram, or 2GB HDD and 512mb ram.

But the reason it is so short on space is that you are expected to use external and flash memory to expand it. It has a SDHC Card slot so you can add up to a 32gb SDHC Card to it, as well as any size flash memory. Many people are even hacking them to add internal USB slots with flash drives in them, so essentially, you can get them with a ton of internal HDD space by adding flash drives and memory cards.

The Memory and HDD can be upgraded cheaply ($60 for 8gb SDHC and 1gb Ram)

The advantages of it are mainly the size and price. It is a 7" LCD, and weighs less 2lbs. It has no moving parts due to a Solid State HDD.

The disadvantages of it are it its internal memory and lack of CD/DVD Drive, but it is a ultra portable so you should use external sources for this anyways!

im probaly gonna buy one, wish the screen was alittle bit bigger, u cant fit a full youtube view on the screen.

im not familiar with linux, i wonder wat would be better. 1 gig of ram of plenty, my computer is 7 years old and has 256mb of ram lol.

any1 know the pros and cons of windows and linux?

I am going to buy the 4G and upgrade the ram to 1gig, and add the 8gb SDHC card to it, making it better than the 8G for $40 less.

here is the extent that you can mod these! This guys has spend a ton of time making this one awesome! The sky is the limit!

http://beta.ivancover.com/wiki/index.php/Eee_PC_Internal_Upgrades

Remember...Even though the screen is 7", the resolution is 800x480, and you can output it to an LCD monitor or tv!

Now the question is black or white...

The Linux is VERY easy to use if you just use what they have included (email, internet browser, firefox, office, and media player). If you want to add more, you should start reading up on http://www.eeeuser.com to learn how to change to the OS to another Linux, or even just to put on OSX or XP.

They are cool little laptops! IIRC you can upgrade the memory yourself (At least in the U.S.A.) and ASUS will not void you warranty despite the warning sticker.

If you want XP on it and you good with computers, I suggest saving the money and installing XP yourself. You can use something like XPlite to strip XP down, and fit it on the smaller drive. You will probably find that the OS that comes loaded on it is simplistic and easy to use.

If you guys get one, post some pictures and your impressions.

If you want windows, do not buy the 2G. You should atleast get the 4G because a stripped Windows XP will take atleast 1.3GB not counting any space used by programs you install (office, firefox, media players).

As soon as I can find one locally, I will buy it. If not, I will order thru NewEgg by the end of the week.

if you are getting one those it really doesnt make sense to have windows. just buy a regular laptop. you can use openoffice and such for your word processing for school. i wish i didnt just buy a latop, those are really cool!

From what I have read with XPlite and your basic programs (Fire Fox, Open Office, and a few others) you are left with about 1.2GB of free space.

I have been eying one of these up for use as a terminal laptop (programming routers and switches and using SSH for remote server access). Amazon seems to be out of most of the black models, but Newegg has them in stock (I am looking at the Galaxy $400 model).

If they had this 4 years ago I would have bought it instead of my laptop. It's incredibly cheap for what you get, and considering that I only use the laptop for browsing the internet, it would have been a no brainer!

I've never seen or heard of it before, so thanks for sharing. What is the battery life like on them?

Asus' Ratings:

2.8 Hours ($350 model)
3.5 Hours ($400 model).

The difference is because of the battery. In theory you could buy a cheaper one and get the longer lasting battery.

Linux supports right-clicking. You can do all the things in Linux that you can do in Windows.

Linky to that review? A larger screen would make this more of an all around laptop replacement for me! Did they mention price?

Edit: I read about that on engadget a few weeks ago.

Ha! I like my Compaq laptop, but I can't help but be excited! I think this and other cheap laptops will pave the way for the future. Before if you wanted something small that you could easuly travel with and do basic tasks you were looking at spending $1,000+++ on something from Sony or another computer.

Asus sold 350,000 of these last quarter, which exceeded their expectations. Now there is talk about selling these in Best Buys in the US! That will certainly make other manufacturers feel a bit of a pinch come September when parents are looking for something for their students.

Don't hold your breath for the 10" ASUS said it's not gonna happen.

Best Buy does currently stock them, but online only. I am hoping to get one at a small local store near me! I will post pics if I succeed!

lol, all laptop batteries seem to start out like that though. My toshiba battery used to last me between 3 and 4 hours, 4 years ago. Now it lasts 20 minutes.....if I'm lucky.

Palm was going to make a Linux based laptop, which looked like it would be bad ass (With a bigger screen then the eee). Unfortunately they killed it off.

Since ASUS made it its probably a pretty stable setup. The only reason i don't like ASUS anymore is because they discontinued a motherboard i have (A8nSLI Premium) instead of recalling it because it was so messed up. and now my desktop doesn't even work. But how do you like it??

Vypurr

It is now my primary computer! It does everything. I may change the OS because the default one is kind of limited.
