My friend has a 1997 Ford Explorer and he wants it sound well tuned and powerful without spending a ton of money. The truck is loud already but its a bad, obnoxious loud. I told him to buy an exhaust system of some kind but that might be too much. Would just a muffler or exhaust tip do much?

LOL. Sorry if you are serious but you're aren't going to make a 97 Explorer fast without a buttload of money.

Anyway, what makes it so loud right now? Did he already change the exhaust? Does he have cats? A little more info would be usefull. If he has no cats, tell him to put cats back on. Just adding a tip will do absolutely nothing. A muffler might effect the sound a little, but that's about it.

first off is it a 5.0? or the 6 banger? If its the 5.0, I've seen some that people make sound like mustangs, and they sound really good. If its a 6 banger, good luck making it sound good.

tell him to google ford explorer forums...its not hard..and thats how i found this website....a little research will go a long way...but i will tell you this..ford explorers are about as reliable as a golf cart with a 100shot of nitrous..

ok will do. and about the reliability, he hasnt had any problems with it other than the fact that it eats more gasoline than a monster truck

Ahaha! A shot at CN! lol

But yea, put a nice exhaust system on it and he will have the noise he wants. And as far as reliability, my family has 2 Explorer's and both have been amazingly reliable!

lol dude chill out. I mean come on...your asking if an exhaust tip makes a difference in sound or power...thats just kind of common sense. But regardless, like I said, 2.5" exhaust with flowmasters. The explorer 5.0's actually make a bit more power then the mustang lx 5.0's. They have whats called gt40p heads, which flow a little better then stock mustang 5.0 heads. All in all though its pretty much the same motor. Good luck with it man.

if you want sound out of a 5.0 you gotta get headers. headers, no cats, and 2.5" flowmaster cat back and its sounds like a mustang. i have a set of stock 5.0 headers sitting in my garage. im not sure if the explorers had the cast iron manifolds or not.

You are right, it's not hard to find, but it's hard to find out the information you want.
