don't know him but with 10gs you shouldnt have a problem picking up a decent GTi.
What are you wanting? MkII, III, IV?
I'd say for the ammount of money you have, go MkIII. Get a MkIII GTI Vr6, with money left over to drop it and maybe go forced induction. I know on vortex you can get a very good condition Mk3 gti vr6 for around 5500-7000 so check it out.
