I can tell you for a fact that the newer 4.6's are a heck of a lot faster then my 5.0 was. I drove my friends 04 aniv. gt 5 speed, and it freakin rips. A lot harder then mine did.

the weight kills it though. ive driven a 99 GT and it just feels big. not that my cars fast or anything but atleast its smaller/lighter. i also had a chance to drive my brothers 03 cobra and damn the termi's rip. 05GT some nice rides you have/had. that black cobra is sick.

Thanks tc. Yeah the black terminator was a great car. I liked the black with red accented interior. My favorite was the rims on that car though. I've always loved them.

Dan my car is too heavy for the power it doesn't have. Doesn't help to have a sub box that takes up half the trunk too haha. I like my car and for some reason I think it is a freak for how little is done to it compared to other 2v mustangs.

And tc I'm down for getting a little meet together for us mustangs and cougars.

stock? you should be getting a little better than that. many things come into play though, wheels, tires, suspension, driver, etc.

When I had my bonestock 91 LX auto, it ran a 14.6. I couldn't get it to run any faster, and I honestly "thought" that it was going to run low 14's. The 5 speeds ran low 14's though bone stock. It really is kind of funny that in stock form, the Mustang hasn't improved much at all in 1/4 mile times!

SO I owned the 91 LX 5.0, which was converted to 5 speed, and then put a new motor in it (just a 306, nothing real special, ported stock heads, e cam, full exhaust, etc.); I rolled it shortly after (whoops!), and didn't have much money so I bought an 86 lx notch with a 351. That car ran a 13.4@106, which is actually pretty impressive for a pretty much stock 351 and on kuhmo's! I got rid of that, had a couple of different cars in between, and bought an 03 cobra. I should have kept that damn car! It was by far my favorite car, but unfortunately, it wasn't the "best" (my current ride is my best car that I've owned, all things considered). The 03 cobra weighed 3680 without me in it, 1/2 tank of gas.

Oh, this is "roll call", so I guess it doesn't matter anyway!

i hit a best of 13.6 in a friends 88GT that just had 3:73s and exhaust. i started out running 14.0 and work my way down to 13.6 at 97mph. I believe it has a lot to do with the driver as his best was like a 14.5 or something. all the stangs seem to run around a 14.0 average until the 03s came out.

The speed density's ran better "stock" anyway! But gears+ exhaust (plus slicks???) isn't stock!

I'd have to look really hard but this car might have a video floating around of it racing, or was that car just there i forget there was alot going on that night. Between WRX's an Vettes lots of talking haha.

Mine was pretty much stock. Had 130k on it. Just a weird ass 2 1/4" to 2 1/2" back to 2 1/4" exhaust and a no name short ram. On pony wheels. I'll admit, I could have had better launches and what not, I'm not the best driver, but I coulda prolly gone a little faster. The 14.7 was spinning first off the line though so I coulda dropped a little. The car only made 192WHP/262FTLBS

your right they did. it had a flowmaster cat back and 3:73s, thats stock imo. No slicks, i was thinking i could turn a 13.40 with them. the MPH was kinda low though. i wish the car was still around id love to see if i could have gotten it.

stock hp was between 185 and 195rwhp, thats good for 130k.

That's not really stock though. I mean, if someone just has a catback, eh ok, that's really not much on the older stangs, but gears, gears can be a big help.

i never said it was stock. i said it had gears and cat back. the cat back doesnt do anything on the five liters and im sure the gears helped it. they dropped 4 tenths if no more off the 1/4 mile time. i never ran it on slicks and i never ran it stone stock, so idk.

87 gt convertible here. Needs a lot of work and won't be driving for probably two years. I can get pics once it's out from under all of the snow.

Also have an 86. I guess it's not a gt but it's still a v8. Don't know much about it really. Also a convertible. 5 speed.

Then there is the 88. Convertible. Gt. Supposed to be fast, but we just bought it and I haven't been for a ride in it yet. My dad has driven it, and my uncle says it's probably an 11 second car. No idea what is done to it. Won't know more until summer.

The 86 and 88 are my dads. The 87 was his, but he told me that since he bought the 88 he didn't have any reason to fix the 87 and I could if I wanted to. So, now it's mine.

I traded my old 10th wheels from my last car to you for your drag rims.

Sigh, after we found out the first youngin' was on her way... We sold (tearing up) our 98 bright atlantic blue svt hardtop for the escape. I thought it was a Ferrari and never took the cover off except for sunday driving. Down the line it will be replaced with something a little cooler, a sn95 mystic cobra :P

Well it was wifey's choice, and she loves it. And when shes happy, I'm happy. I personally think the seats in the Escape SUCK, 1500 miles south to key west in the drivers seat will really leave a kink in your back. But it's wonderful in the snow and I can easily pull my 4x6 trailer jam packed with firewood.

Once the kids are old enough to climb in to the car themselves, we will be ditching the escape for a sportwagen... Comon' Jetta TDI hybrid! Or maybe a focus wagon with a svt swap,

I would say if you had more then 10 cars, you should call ahead and try to reserve a pavilion. I don't think there is a cost associated with it, but I'm not sure-

yea with a 2.8 pulley...it cranks the stock boost of 6psi up to 10psi. The engines can handle more but the M112 eatons or i should say Heatons are only good to about 15 or so and thats when they are ported i believe. Can't wait til the Twin-screw day comes

LIPCOLL320
05-14-2009, 10:26 AM
Twin screw is the way to go. With a twin screw, headers and a bigger injectors its possible to get well over 500hp at the wheels. Maybe even low 600hp.

05 mazda6s
05-14-2009, 10:45 AM
Is that the way to go with these? I know there are so many directions people take either: turbo (mostly twin, haven't heard of single), kennebell (big favorite and sounds badass), whipple (heard these put down serious power?) or port the eaton and go bolt-ons.

LIPCOLL320
05-14-2009, 10:49 AM
The ultimate upgrade is the twin turbo kit that also keeps the supercharger. Those kits can put out over 1000hp at the wheels. Most common though are the whipples or the kenny bell.

LIPCOLL320
06-04-2009, 08:21 AM
I agree with you depending on what you do with the car. IRS is superior for the road course, however not so good for the dragstrip. The IRS on the Cobras is just a weak link. Apparently GM has figured it out on the vettes.

Ciotti
06-04-2009, 11:18 AM
The IRS being better for road course duty is debatable, it's design was compromised because the rear of the car was designed for a solid rear axle and because of that it will never work as well as a Vette which was designed around it's IRS. The Mustang's IRS is heavier, the geometry isn't great, and it has cooling issues which are the main reasons that the majority of the winning road race Mustangs have solid rear axle's. For daily driving and highway rolls the IRS is definitely king but for almost everything else the solid rear axle tends to be better when built with the right parts.

All that brace does is prevent the rear diff from grenading on hard launches or during hard wheel hop, it doesn't solve any of the geometry issues caused by cramming an IRS into a space meant for a solid rear axle.

Are there Local Course Driving schools around NJ, like Englishtown or the new NJMP in Millville? This is something I'd really like to look into.

NJMP is running an event 6/19 I believe. You usally get 4 or 5 20min sessions on the track with an instructor for I think around $300.00. Now keep in mind IF you hit the guard rail not only will you have to pay for it, but you insurance will not pay for your vehicles damage if they find out you were on the track. I'm not sayin you dont know how to drive, but I've seen people wreck their cars to no fault of their own (fluid on the track or someone else causing a crash, driving above their ability). Just keep that in mind.

Thanks man,

Yea, I'm by no means an expert of a driver and know I have a lot to learn. Just trying to figure out the best place to get a good foundation and then go from there to see. I'd like to avoid one of the schools that puts you in one of their own little "formula" cars because I want to learn how to handle my own car the best I can not some light track car that handles different.

Also keep in mind that you will be going through a full set of brake pads and almost a full set of tires at a track day so make sure you have a fresh set of both on the car that you are willing to sacrifice to the gods of speed :)

If you want to start off a bit cheaper, autocrossing is a great way of getting your feet wet into the world of high performance driving and will actually teach you to be extremely technical with your driving which will be a huge help when you are ready for a full on track day.

I'm an instructor for South Jersey SCCA and we have an autocross every month at Camden Community College's Blackwood campus. This month's event is on the 21st and I'd be more than willing to ride along with you and get you headed in the right direction. Yeah, I was right in front of you and Fabio's Terminators with the black SN-95 vert. Autocrossing is where it's at man, it's where us fast drivers go to play :) It takes the car out of the equasion (to a point) and pits driver against driver in a battle to the DEATH!!! It's seriously tons of fun though, your car looked relatively stock so you would probably run in F Stock with Sean who has the red Mach 1 that was right next to me and Steve who has the tan Firechicken that was down the row a bit. They're both fairly new to it so if you get started now you shouldn't get blown out of the water by them and you guys can have a nice american muscle battle. I'm an instructor too so I can do a ride along or two and jump start the learning curve for you. Here's the info page for the region we run and feel free to PM me with any questions http://www.sjr-scca.org/solo.html

Yea, its hard to find a good exhaust setup for a 6cylinder. I agree with Ciotti on the resonators being added into the setup to eliminate the unwanted raspy tone. Any idea on the headers he had installed like were they long tube or what? I want to say an X pipe might help the sound, I remember hearing one before that I liked. It sounded almost like an 8 cylinder at low rpms, unfortunately at high rpms it won't sound the same though. The reason i ask about the headers is because depending on what size they are, will determine the mid-pipe fitment you'll need.

yea with a 2.8 pulley...it cranks the stock boost of 6psi up to 10psi. The engines can handle more but the M112 eatons or i should say Heatons are only good to about 15 or so and thats when they are ported i believe. Can't wait til the Twin-screw day comes

Stock boost on 03/04 Cobras is 8lbs not 6. With a 2.8 pulley you should be seeing aroung 12-13lbs not just 10.

The Eatons can do 15-16lbs without a port, but anything more than yet, yes, a port would best.

it isnt that bad, barely effects gas mileage and should actually get better mpg around town. i had 4.30s in my 04 gt for like 50k+ miles, only reason reason i dont still have them in it because the car wont hook well with them anymore so i have 3.90s now. wish i still had the 4.30s though

The gear ratio is much different on the S197 Mustangs then previous. 4.10's are not as bad as they use to be on the older stangs. I had them on my 05. 1st gear is virtually non existent, but aside from that, on highway it's not that bad. It obviously does put your RPM's a bit higher....

Been a couple years now since I had my 05 but IIRC at 80mph I was at like 3,100 RPM.

If you have more city type driving it really won't hurt at all, but highway as someone already said maybe like 1-2 mpg. For so long I was stuck on just getting 3.73s but then I was like screw it, I'm going to go 4.10s.

I wanna say it was near 2.5k or 2.6 k but I am being honest when I say don't quote me cuz it's been a long time and when I had my 05, I put my 4.10's in pretty soon after getting it so I can't remember that far back.

In my '08 GT with the factory optional 3.55 gears, 80 MPH is ~2400 RPM.

I put the stock tire size and 5th gear ratio into a gear ratio and engine speed calculator spreadsheet. These were the results:
With the factory standard 3.31 gears, 80 MPH is 2220 RPM.
With the factory optional 3.55 rear, its 2380 RPM at 80 MPH.
With 3.73 gears, 80 MPH is 2500 RPM.
With 4.10 gears, 80 MPH is 2920 RPM.

Get whatever sounds better to you. The axle back exhaust haven't shown a gain of more than 3-4 HP on the dyno. Some show no power gain at all. The stock cat back is pretty efficent and most of the bends don't decrease the diameter of the pipe much, so doing a cat back doesn't give much of a horsepower gain over an axle back on a mildly modified car.

Some of the Mustang forums have exhaust sound threads and yooutube has a lot of videos of the various axle and cat back systems on the '05 and up cars. Listen to varoups ones and pick the one that sounds best to you.

my car hooked on the street with a 3-4k slip on 315/35/17 nittos leaving on 150shot with cams/4.30s. it pretty much just had lower control arms, subframe connectors and stupid stuff like that. anyone who says 1st gear doesnt exist with 4.10s are out of their mind, yeah every gear is shorter with more gear but come on lol.
i still had 4.30s in my car all the way up until the current setup, i liked the 4.30s even with 600rwhp. i changed to 3.90s only because now i have a useable 2nd gear on my nittos, if i still drove daily on a m/t radial or slick i would have stayed with the 4.30s lol

When I had my 05 and put 4.10's sure, 1st gear was there, but it was pretty much useless as you had to shift to 2nd in what seemed the amount of time it took to lift your foot from the clutch. That is my opinion of non existent.

From what I hear, 4.30s are perfect for mustangs because on the 1/4 mile you'll be closing the trap in 4th gear perfectly which is exactly what you want. But on the streets there's no use really for such steep gears.

Also, in case anyone didn't see I have the 98 svt cobra for sale in the cars for sale section.

For the track yes, but from what it sounded like, well at least the way I read it was that the original guy asking about gears he drives it daily, so 4.30's I wouldn't recommend for daily driving.

I remember when you joined here and said you just got it. Any reason you are selling it now?

You have a power adder and don't rev high. On an N/A DOHC, 4.56s are ideal for drag racing. Though 4.30s might be a better idea for DDing. Anything less than 4.30 is just a waste.

For the track yes, but from what it sounded like, well at least the way I read it was that the original guy asking about gears he drives it daily, so 4.30's I wouldn't recommend for daily driving.

I remember when you joined here and said you just got it. Any reason you are selling it now?

Well it my dad's and I and it's an awesome car and everything wish we didn't have to sell it but I'm gonna need an economical car to commute to school.
