my opinion George is that until openecu.org is able to crack the 08 ecu and offer a free tuning platform - an Accessport will be an excellent upgrade for your WRX. the great thing about the AP is that it adds power & torque even to a bone stock car. and when you add an exhaust or other mod - having the AP along with that mod will give you more power gains than just the exhaust by itself would. it has some cool features and holds its value fairly well.

Do it.

to add to that... when you go far enough that you think there are no maps for your car there are pro tuners or accestuners that can make a custom map just for the mods you have

Seriously dude, cobbs maps work for basic **** and can help you safely go fast, I would wait until some one more skilled than the hacks over there can do something worthwhile for your car. It just seems way to soon to be putting engine management out for an ECU that intricate. It will be worth it in the end to wait. Plus 500-800 to run richer isnt money well spent.

To counter what Fred said, Yes they hold their value well but when everyone with 08s and open ECU are making 30-50 more horses than you and getting better mpgs you are going to have a hell of a time selling that thing.

dude,

"the hacks over there (cobb)" are u Fing serious? Cobb has been working on the 08 ecu since BEFORE the 08 was released. do you really think a company like COBB would just throw an engine managemant system on the market without rigorously testing it? and I seem to remember you being all about the AP when you got yours.

to counter some of your points though, yes they may run rich compared to a custom tune - and they will make less power than a custom tune. but having an AP with mods will SILL give you more power than the mods alone. you simply cannot deny that. and if you don't feel like waiting however many months till openECU cracks it - i think the AP is a pretty decent way to go.

and ill just add that openECU is only as good as the person who makes the tune. and as said before - the 08 is a brand new ECU and as you said yourself "intricate." when it comes to something so new, I would want to have someone tune my car who has plenty of experience working with such a new ECU.

so that said - i think its worth buying an AP & having more power NOW and for months to come, and then when openECU comes around and tuners become familiar AND comfortable with the 08, then look into a custom tune & selling the AP.

and for the record: the newest version of accessports STILL hold their value even in the age of openECU. I was able to sell my new version AP for only a $50 loss after owning it for 6 months & then selling it in favor of openECU. not everyone has access to custom tuners. there are still LOTS of people who want simple, easy to use, staged, plug & play power upgrades.

i think its a good idea... they're definitely not 'hacks'. have you read about anyone else with an 08 getting one and what kind of results they've had? also what are your options at this point for a turboback?

honestly, i would wait a little bit, to see what happens after the STi comes out and see how that affects the tuning market... tuners could hack this ecu faster than you think... cobb is decent tho.

I have no doubt whatsoever that openECU will hack the 08 and have a tuning platform ready for it. my point is that even with the new availability of the platform - its still a different ECU for tuners to learn. just because the platform is available doesn't mean that suddenly anyone with a laptop is gonna be an expert at tuning on it. tuning takes knowledge & experience - not just software. I would personally wait even after openECU releases 08 info to get a custom tune. would you want a tuner experimenting on YOUR car?

id get an AP - be fast now - wait until 08 openECU is released - wait some more (but still be fast) - make sure nobody blows up their 08 from openECU - once you are confident in your tuners ability, then get a custom tune - then sell the AP for a $50 loss.
