Can answer that when its cold the shifting gets really notchy.
A grind is very different then a notch. I sometimes struggle with second in the cold until it warms up. In the winter.. an extra few minutes to let the fluids warm is a good idea in a turbo anyhow.

Where at? I could do it, i've driven over a handful of evo's. From 500whp to stock, so I could tell you what I think.

The 03-04s always came across as harder to get into gear than the new 05-07 evo
s with the acd. The earlier years also had transfer case problems.

My IX feels really notchy from 1st into 2nd. For some reason it seems to go smoother if I hesitate letting of the gas when shifting (keeps the rpms up). This really confuses me because I would think the syncro would prefer the rpms to drop to what they will be in the next gear. Anyways, I think its pretty common for the trans to feel "notchy."

Kind of a side note... I'd be interested in having a local Evo meet near Allentown PA. This stuff is all new to me as well so I would like to compare cars and such.

As for the shifter feel, it’s possible the gear and diff oil hasn’t been serviced in a long time (if ever.) It’s almost more crucial than the engine oil. After a gear oil change, not only does the shifter feel change but the entire car feels smoother.

What day are you trying to go?

Unfortunately, I’ll most likely be sleeping this morning (I get off work at 08:00am.) But if you’ve got other Evo owners with you that’d be great.

How many miles are on the car?
