hey guys whats up, i have a 93 Civic with a 2000 D16Y8 swap in it..my question is..is i found one of those "generic" 600.00 turbo kits on ebay.. now..i know there ****ty..but all i really have to worry about is getting a new BOV and WG right?? how long do the turbo's usually last and are they any good?? Do you think they are good for like 1 summer, until i bought a better one?? also.how many lbs of boost can you run on a y8, i know there high compression then the Z6.. let me know, thanks..

oh and please refrain from saying save your money...im not buying this kit, i just want info on it..

i do :)
what kind of turbo kit on ebay? some of the polished tubular manifolds on ebay crack and turbos and wg's literally fall off.

i have a turbo kit for sale - made 300 whp and 271 lbs of tq on it!!!

also y8 and z6 i think have the same compression but the z6 heads have different quench areas which actually are better for boosting.
i would say a stock d16y8 WITH ARP headstuds is a RELIABLE 220WHP

If that ebay turbo you have is new. Sell it and get a OEM turbo that is in good shape. I've heard many stories and seen pictures of those ebay turbos falling apart.

The manifold WILL fall apart. No question about it. If you're going to go with a cheap one, get a cast one. It will probably last a lot longer and end up costing the same.

For info and examples of turbo'd D series motors, refer to homemadeturbo.com where everyone seems to have one.

PM Pearl on this site. He knows about turboing D series motors, and is on this board.

No love?

I've done it all Dseries wise. N/A, supercharged, turbo.

My old D16Y8 put down 217whp 170wtq on 8psi.

My built Z6 puts down considerably more.

As far as tuning goes the Y8 is a pain in the ass. A lot of tuners are sketchy when it comes to the Y8, the smaller quench area causes base timing to be at 12* instead of the normal 16*. Most tuners throw a Z6 map on it, which in turn causes low end bucking, warped idle, and lots of blow headgaskets/headlifting under boost.

The ebay ones are crap. Just buy an intercooler kit from them and save yourself the money/hassle. Get a good used turbo with good seals, a nice log/cast manifold, good wastegate, decent BOV, have a friend weld up a half decent downpipe/exhaust for beer and food and get it tuned. Don't boost on your basemap, that likes to blow things up.

since this was already brought up. If i purchased a tubular manifold on e-bay and re-welded it would it hold? Im confused as to which areas fall apart? just the welds? I can weld/brace it. The only reason im avoiding a cast is because i do not want to get a manifold where my wastegate point is on one runner. That is asking for boost creep and un-even cylinder wear. So far i havent seen a cast manifold with the wastegate flange on the collector.

^ Seriously just spend a hundred extra bucks and have a manifold that will last and work. Rewelding and bracing is still weaker than a properly welded manifold.
