View Full Version : Seasonal registration?

Hello,

I just bought a car I intend to use as a winter beater, meanwhile I'd like to take my saab off of my insurance policy (beat up summer tires and premium gas are not exactly what I need to get to and from work), now I heard that my registration will become suspended if I take the car off of my insurance policy and that I'll be asked to turn the plate in. Is that so? If so, is there such a thing as "seasonal" registration where I'd be able to have the car spring/summer/fall fully insured and drivable and than uninsured and parked over the winter?

Thanks.

Definitely wait to get a response from Sarge but real quick to add my recent experience here...
You cant remove the car entirely but you can put it on comprehensive only. You cant drive the car at all, but it will still be covered in the event of theft, vandalism, natural disasters, fire, etc etc. It dropped the monthly payment on my car from $90 down to $8. So... that made me pretty happy and it might work for you as well. I'm using Progressive for insurance, not sure if it varies by company.

I spoke to my insurance agent and they won't let me just keep comprehensive. There is such a thing as seasonal registration as I found out. Here is a link to the form if anyone wonders: http://www.dot3.state.pa.us/pdotforms/mv_forms/mv-140sv.pdf

The whole idea would be to not pay insurance on the car for the duration of time (winter) without surrendering the tags. Of course the car can not be driven during this period of time, but that's the whole point. I will still look into having the car insured in some way, so that if my neighbors back into it it's still covered.

I still would like to see sarge's take on this one though. There has to be a downside to the idea.

Yeah its me Mr. Downside!
And here it is you'll need your car insured anyway and your insuance has said no to comprehensive right. Well why take the car off the road what if the beatter takes a crap on you in Feb and you need a car to get to work? the best bet is to keep both cars up and running so you can use the Saab on nicer days you know you'll want too. Sounds like you may have to change insuance in order to do what you would like to do with the car and its a good money saving idea. But it may be a big pain in the butt to change if you need the car mid-winter. I would bet it will cost you more money then you would save by just parking it and keeping it taged and insured to get it on the road again if you needed it.

In short I wouldn't do it myself for a car.

You're the voice of reason...and I lack that :-D I'm pretty good with keeping my beaters in running condition...it's fun to have to rebuild a transmission overnight. I am thinking about switching, but my wife recently had an at fault accident with her brand new car...and I'm sure I'll be punished for that. In the end I'll most likely will eat the cost of insurance, but $400 each month is pretty bad even with my salary.
