Project: 'Benz-10

My buddy George and I have been having some more sick & twisted diesel thoughts. He has an '83 Benz 300 turbo diesel. Its rusty with typical MB wiring quirks, but runs its a$$ off with excellent fuel economy. I am in the process of obtaining an S10 pick up with a grenaded motor.

The plan: drop the diesel into the truck. We figure the car weighs ~1,000lbs more than he truck. The car has a 2.70ish:1 gear ratio, and the turbo wants to come in around 1,500rpm. The torque convertor can be loosened up a bit for a stall speed around 1,500.

The truck probably has a 3.73 or 4.10 ratio which will be perfect. We'll fab up a front mount intercooler, open the exhaust up, and inject whatever other fluids we can come up with to get it into the 13 second range and still pull 30 mpg.

I think it can be done.

Sounds like a cool project, and with how there is a few of those KKK turbos in every junkyard, still in good shape, finding a new one won't be very hard. Good luck on the project! Can't wait to see it get going.

dude, if you do get the truck, and they do let you keep the NAPA hat on it, that would be insanly funny looking. the new meaning to a modded delivery truck.

The Napa truck isn't looking too promising right now, which really sucks since it is perfect for the swap...the engine would fit nice and it is CHEAP!

The next big hurdle- the 'Benz is IRS with a fixed diff and driveshaft yoke, where most trucks have floating axle housings. So, we will have to graft the benz rear chassis into the frame, which neither one of us is willing to do to an S10. The hunt is on for a more deserving project...possibly a Morris Minor or a 30's-40' pick-up rat rod project.
