View Full Version : How fast is fast, how slow is slow?

What do you all consider fast with the 1/4 mile as a barometer?
(think something you drive all the time, not a weekend racer)
13 sec
12 sec
11 sec
10 sec etc?
At what point is a car slow 15, 16 seconds?
I think for me fast starts somewere in the 12s and slow is somewere in the 15's.

hmm...
I think of "slow" as 15.0 to 16.0, anything slower is... really slow. No offense to those people on here with <16 sec cars.
I consider a street driven car running mid 13's to mid 14's "quick," and a car in the low 13's consistently fast. That's on a street car. Then when you dip into the 11's on a street car, that's "really fast." 10's is certifiably insane, and can be claimed by very few.
hah, that was probably my most ridiculous sounding post ever. but yeah...
I think any car stock that can run low 15's high 14's is pretty quick pocket rocket... low 14's to high 13's is fast... and anything in the 12's is sick fast, and 11's and below is just stupid fast.

Oh yeah, stock is different. Talking stock cars, I agree with doug totally. I was talking modified cars.

11s good modding
12s fast
13s quick
14s stock
15s (you brought that to the track?)
Much below 11s isn't much of a street car any more.

Anything that needs a cage to run is fast.
That being said though, I think that 12's are where I start calling a car fast. There are a ton of cars running 13's these days.
[aging self]when I was younger a 13 second Mustang was a real terror on the streets. Out hunting for Vette's and such. Now a days there are cars running 13's stock, from 4 cyls.[end aging].
A slow car is probably mid 15's and higher. I believe the person that runs a 15 second car is trying to see what that car can do, not get the most speed out of it. Or they are budget limited, and are working with what they have. Either way as long as the fact that they are not driving super cars is known to them, more power to them. I will respect that.

Fast is relative to what your used to. If you have an 11 second car that you drive every single day, 11's are no longer all that fast to you.
To me for a street car:
12's = plenty fast for the avg "tuner"
11's = pretty quick
10's = fast, very few are still daily drivers
8's-9's = probably rarely street driven, but a damn fast street car.
Slow is relative too. 17's are slow to me, but for an SUV or a car that gets 40+mpg, its fine. A 15 second car can feel decent at times. I can respect anyone who takes a car out to the track though as long as you know your not the fastest thing out there.
I still remember bringing my car to the track and running 15.46 bone stock less than a week after I bought it. 3 years later and almost 4 seconds faster, my perception of a fast street car has changed some.

What was your mph? That should give you an indication of how fast it really is. Or to be more correct how well you could keep up on the highway with cars running faster ETs but similar MPH.

....for a 13.8 I trapped 100. For my last run to where I broke down 3/4 of the way I ran a 14.6 @ 96. I don't see how that trap speed could even equate to a high 13?

Thats all of my runs up to like the second week I had the 14b on my car. I made way too many runs since then to update it again, maybe if I get bored enough this week, I'll work on it though.
Run 35 is a 13.96 at 95mph on the T25. Theres mid 13's at under 100mph on the T25 on there also (ex run 56).

Like said above what is fast is all relative to what you are used too. I remember going from a 1987 300zx which would probably run 17s to a stock talon and I thought the talon was fast. Turns out it only ran low 15s. Years late my talon runs 120 through the quarter and makes my low 15 second MR2 feel like a turd.

I have a friend in SC that went 13.33 on it also. I was still really close to stock when I went 13.48 (safc, clutch, exhaust, boost controller and air filter is basically it). My friend had DSMLink, cams and a couple other things on top of what I had. He was between turbo's so he decided to make some passes. I think the T25 has 12's in it with the proper IC, proper tuning and some good driving. Maybe I'll put it back on my car after my next engine build for a couple passes.

anything over 15s is slow and probably doesn't belong on a track. 14's are reasonable. 13's is pretty quick. 12 fast, and 11's damn quick.
my srt does consistant mid to low 12's, and that's with me blowing vacuum lines before the 330' on every run. if it stayed in one piece i should be in the 11's.
our mustang will be about a 9s street car (8-900 rwhp). and yes, i mean street car. it is being set up to run NMRA wild street (formerly true street) class. it will pass emissions, and get decent gas mileage too. it can be done.

NO I'M NOT! :finga:
But honestly, if you bring something to the track, it belongs there. I don't care if it's a 30 second International. You have the balls to bring it to a track...ANY kind of track, it belongs. Riced, modded, stock, whatever. If they bring it, it shouldn't be shunned off the track just because it runs 16's or 17's.
Most of the 9's guys give mad props to people that run 15's and up, because you're actually there trying to see if you can improve yourself and your car. People that have moved up from their 15 second or 13 second stock cars look down on the people that are just starting out there. It's almost as if they forgot where they started from.
And track racers wonder why no one goes to tracks anymore...arrogance makes them feel like crap. I got a ton of static when I brought the turd to the track, but once it was in staging, I got a ton of respect for even bringing it.

I got a ton of underhood credit when it was cooling off (I love racing in +130* weather. Peoples ice wasn't even lasting long for cool downs).
If you talk to the people looking at your car, you can get good words and criticism.
Honestly, if someone says to my face that my car is crap, I'll just say "It still makes it down the quarter, and for those 10 seconds or less...I'm free.".

i guess that kinda came out wrong. i was really talking about these really slow cars that the owners "think" are fast until they get to a track. you know the type, tall all sorts of crap about how fast they are and can beat anything on the street and then run a 15 if they're lucky. there are a TON of those around here. hell last week i lined up against an integra and it ran a 21. a 21!!! i was on the return lane and he was just crossing the finish line. i have no idea what happened during that run, but guy couldn't talk his car up enough in the lanes.
around here there are a lot of owners that talk all sorts of crap about how fast they are and then either refuse to line up with you (happened to me last week. in the lanes, 4 cars were behind me in the last lane and all refused to line up) or line up and then make excuses. the absolute worst are those though that talk crap about their cars and will not take it to a track and put a number on it. got a lot of those around these parts as well.
i personally don't road race/autox at all, so i have no idea how my car does in that. i have friends that do, and they do pretty well at it. i'm planning on trying it out this season i just haven't had a chance to as the autox's are always on days when i have events or something else to do. i know that the srt isn't the greatest when it comes to this type of racing, but it's a hell of a lot better than people give it credit for.

16's----You should have started out with a better car to begin with, even if it ran 16's stock
15's----Decent place to start with a stock ride, but don't leave it that slow!
14's----Good place to be with bolt-on's if you're all motor. You can keep up with alot of stuff on the street, even if you have your fair share of killed stories.
13's----Can beat most stuff on the street and if they're quicker, they'll at least give you props for being able to hang (especially if you own a car that started life as a 15 second slug)
12's----There's always someone faster, but usually, you show other's that that someone is you!

Low 13's - Quick car but there are so many now a days.
