View Full Version : BMW 135i...more M3 than...the M3?

It seems like the whole auto world here is stoked for getting the 135i. It harks back to the smaller, very nimble, and very quick cars of BMW's past..notably the E30 M3. What dawned on me though, is that each M3 after that gen has gotten a bit more..heavier...less impactful..etc. Sorta like the R32 GTR and the R33 and R34 after that..they were awesome cars (as are the E46 and E92), yet they never truly did what the R32 did (like be banned from numerous racing circuits).
So thus I pose the question..is the 135i..a small sports coupe with 300bhp..more M3- in the true, historical sense of it- than the E92 M3?

There's a picture. It is all up to what the M division wants to do with the cars probably. Their thinking of how they want to be represented has changed over the years and the current cars are the product.

Yea I love it..i'd hope they make an M version..I just think that this is what BMW needs..IMHO..they are polluted with stuff like iDrive and crazy styling (ala Bangle) that really gets away from what they truly were.

Nicely said. Not that I'll be in the market for a car built in this century anytime soon but, it's good to see some companies turning around and breaking from the mold. The e30 m represented something that is sorely missed nowadays: A balanced and nimble car that actually required an effort(and hence a pleasant reward to) from the driver, yet remaining completely germanic in demeanor(cars once possessed nationality, not modern ****geneity). The later cars look better on paper, but what indicator is that of fun factor? Smooth broad powerbands= boredom, just as a car that requires little attention from the driver.

edit-pretty sad when a forum feels the need to censor something that can also be a foreword to the human race i.e. Xsapiens.
edit edit- Actually, it is rather ugly(subjective of course) but they could do worse.

It would be nice for companies to start making cars under 3000lbs again.

it should be here this spring and its gonna be a sick ass car. i wanna buy one real bad, but i need to get a truck first. i drive a 335i sport coupe on a daily basis and that car is a blast to drive!!!! its got a shiv Procede v2, so that makes it that much more fun to drive. best 1/4 time to date is 12.40 at 110. im pretty sure i can get a 12.20-12.00 with good air. the 135i is only gonna be that much better!

And thats a matter of opinion. I think it looks bad, but a lot of cars look worse in pix than in person. The back end bothers me, and I think the car looks squished...

The 135i is scheduled to come to the states I believe in the Spring of 08. Prices are supposed to start around low to mid 30's I believe. Also I have not heard anything about them releasing an M series car due to the name behind the original BMW M1. However the 135i is supposed to have the suspension of an M series as well as the aero parts. Currently the 135i is at the top of the list for SRT replacements for me.

They should have made the 135i their z coupe only, not the 135. It just looks, ODD. Make that car in to a hatchback and I'd probably consider buying one!
Also, perhaps gto will like this, but doesn't the E46 STILL handle WORLDS better than the E30, no matter how much heavier? The E46 is better in EVERY category though, it's not just better performance. Maybe BMW should just offer a stripped out E46? (err, now the E90, even better)

It's not always about that, but how relative the car was for the time.
And MPower, the E46 wasn't banned in nearly the amount of stuff the R32..or even Audi was.

the styling of a car is subjective. stop being an ass.
and 3440 lbs is not light. i love bmw but it just doesnt do it for me.
there is a serious whole in the auto world when it comes to sporty rwd coupes...
such a shame, cars like the E30 M3 shall never return.

have you ever driven a 335i?? ive driven E30 M3s and it may handle better, but the fun factor of the 335i out weights it to me. the low torque and top end pull is great. the car still handles pretty dam good. the 135i is gonna be that much better, its 300lbs lighter!

Obiviously it would be "better"..it has what..almost 2 decades worth of technological evolution on it's side?
I think I should clarify..I meant spiritual successor. You really can't compare a car that old with a brand new car...way too many factors play into it. (increased safety standards, different emissions standards, euro/us differences, relative competition, relative models..etc etc).

Yea..and part of that car lies in my logic. The jump from the 335i to the M3 is not as..epic..as it was for the 3 series to the E30 M3.
And the E30 also really had no true rivals..whereas you'd be hard pressed to find (now) something that doesn't beat the E92 (ala RS4).

The 1 hatch is so much better looking than the coupe to me its not funny. Its just something about the coupe that is so uninspiring.
BMW did offer a stripped out M3, the CSL. It was lighter and more powerful than the regular M3. We never saw them due to low productions and trying to legalize them was not worth BMWs time, but we saw a few of the CSL components in the Competition package.

the e30m3 had a rival, the MB 190E Cosworth, it just not as big as the e92m3 and RS4.

During the e36m3 time they offered the LTW which was a stripped down version of the m3, same power just lighter and different suspension among other things.
The CSL package for the US e46 was pretty much the same way lighter, different suspension, same power.
personally i like the e30/e36 m3s the best, they are the best drivers car and the most fun to drive. i think all the new cars today are to much luxury cars that require no effort or anything for that matter to drive them. in other words boring, no fun.

I'd agree that the 190E was a rival, but it just didn't do it's part. You never questioned yourself with the E30. You do, and everyone has, with the E92.

And add wheels, tires, brakes, and the various other bits you need to make a car actually roll and it's actually $40K. :-p
I think for that money I'd rather have a Z4 coupe (255 hp). Lighter, stiffer, lower, just a purpose built sports car.

You can't deny that they have gotten very show as of late. I'll admit I'm am very biased about BMWs as they are my sworn enemy, but I'd never get an M Coupe cause I could have a Corvette Z51 for the same price. A Vette is holy crap fast as opposed to the M coupes really pretty fast.

I'm going to test drive the new M3 when it debuts, but I'm keeping my options open. I hope they don't use servotronic. I drove a family member's M6 around all last week and the steering is just totally numb if you aren't at speed. By the time the M3 are attainable (probably sometime in early '09 without selling a kidney or two), I'll probably be in a position to make a move toward something with better all around performance.
If the M3 doesn't totally blow me away on the road, I will be giving up on all performance BMWs until they put the 5.0L V10 in a mid-engine "supercar." The only new BMW I'd consider buying at my age is the 330xi as a daily driver.

All I have to say is WWWWWWWWWOWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!
These Mags that are testing it at 4.8 to 60 are smoking crack. 4.0 4.1 no problem. My M does it in about 4.4-4.5. Till about 40-50 MPH it feels like my chipped 335 thats boosting 15 PSI (387 RWHP) but this V8 screamsssssss top end and just pulls like all hell. The E92 M3 has some nifty electronics and the thick go cart steering wheel is sick. Steering response kills my Z4M and E46 M3 once you hit the settings the suspension tightens. This car handles amazing for gaining weight. The LSD feels a bit different too to cant even explain it. All those mag numbers I saw of the new M and thought it was garbage. Well I take all that back. This is one hell of a car. Good Job M division! Lets hope the next Z4M is just as good.
