Congrats to Steve for putting down big numbers on pump, and pump only!
For all those wondering, he is running a Schwitzer/Borg Warner S258 turbo with a T3 mani - very similar to our shop cars S366, only smaller. We were very curious to see what the car would do...after many street pulls, we knew it was going to make power! Wish I could of been there!

I don't know how much more was in it on the stock intake manifold, my airflow flatlined at 6600rpms on every pull. Hopefully I'll have some timeslips this week with it, then the C16 goes in and the real fun starts! I'd like to get a real intake mani. but the fat midrange is enough fun for now. Was a fun day, met lots of new faces and saw some impressive cars. The Forester XT was cool in particular.

No RSX's ran and his clutch was slipping bad. He went to about 3500rpm and it let loose everytime. The auto 2g was leaking coolant and smoking white like a blown headgasket so he didn't get any runs in.

I put down 214, at least thats what was on the board. I was too busy looking at my A/F, which decided to hold 11:1 until it shot to 16:1 at 6700 rpms.
Yikes...I dont think I got a chance to take it to redline, didnt hear the rev limiter on my runs cause i had to keep getting off it early. Going to guestimate that there was a few more ponies those last 500 rpms. But I would like to keep my engine for now so I can get retuned for this lean state in cold weather, ditch some weight, and then rematch the saturn lol

from the way you describe it, its possible you hit some form of fuel cut and didnt realize it. but looking at the sheet will shed some more light on it.

I am going to log my car anyway....i dont know if its the transmissions rotation or what not...but i am getting two vibrations inside the car with my motor mounts. (All my motor mounts are poly. No Rubber protection for me. Like it hard.)(sorry TMI i think)
A light typical vibration of motor mounts when you get off the throttle lightly. And if I put a load on the engine and get off, the vibration isnt worse, however it sounds much different.
Now my question is...since I do not think I have ever felt these distinct different vibrations.....could this be detonation from running lean when getting off the gas.
Or, is this typical from say, the tranny being wound up by full throttle and then immediately slowing with the engine. I am assuming that the different chassis vibrations could be from the trannies rotational mass and the difference between "light throttle to no throttle" versus "heavy throttle to no throttle."

Well who ran before me and him, I know the MR2 already went. Did the sleeper wagon run before me as well? I am not too sure. Maybe there was moisture in the scanner for the first few runs. It was uptop in the RPM band when the spike ocurred for both of us. A little wacky.

that does look like an issue with the wideband. if it really did go that lean, you would see the hp/tq take a nice dive at the same point the a/f did. but that was not the case here.

typically what happens is u postion the sniffer in the exhaust so that it is striaght in the exhaust stream and as the car revs higher the vibration in the exhaust shifts the sniffer to an angle where it can not pick up the exhaust stream (or falls out) The Dyno jet wideband module that comes with the dyno is one of the fastest most accurate ones out there. the bosch sensor it uses is the same as most high end manufactuers and standalones (porshe, Lambo, ferrari, and Motec)
I hope no one uses the sniffer for tuning...as it is good for getting a general idea of afr's on a dyno day i doubt they use it for tuning...

Here is my file....the damn wideband only worked once....other wise with those A/F ratios....we would still be picking up the peices of my car lol. One more question, how can you feel for detonation when decelerating. Would it be making a specific noise or vibration. I feel everything through my poly mounts and something is wierd with the cold weather. Took the smoothing out, officially at zero in the picture.

Tim, go back in the winpep and turn the smoothing up to 5, that way we can see it a little better

detonation cant happen on deceleration. only under wide open throttle runs.
the noise it makes is a higher pitch metallic ping (similar to what you hear when you turn the car off, and your exhaust is cooling down). however its normally not loud enough to hear when you are driving on the street.
if your car has a factory knock sensor (most do), you would feel detonation as a loss of power during acceleration, because the ecu starts to retard ignition timing in an attempt to save the motor.
if you are hearing a vibration on deceleration, then its just something loose making a noise. poly motor mounts tend to make all sorts of things vibrate and make noises, that never would normally.

as far as the dynos wideband.... they are very accurate, but tend to go bad from people who do runs with race gas.
also, a change in weather can make your a/f leaner, if you had a very aggressive tune in warmer weather. its always best to invest in a wideband for any turbo/supercharged car. you cant just trust that its "tuned", and that your a/f will be right on the money regardless of climate change, or boost creep.

Lagos, Thanks my friend. I didnt think detonation is possible on decelleration. But better to ask than to assume. Yea, I will chock it up to something being loose. Just never noticed it before, the different vibrations i am feeling from full throttle to partial throttle. Probably broke something my last AutoX event. I had to replace my lower poly mount cause it cracked. If that thing split, something else probably is loose too.

I am impressed with the torque that it chucked out before it started slipping. Didn't think the MR2 had that kinda torque NA. Send me your file so I can format it to read everything.

AEM Tru Boost. Why do you ask?
It's set at 23psi (65 duty cycle) and wastegate crack pressure is set at 11.5psi

thats not too bad. for comparison, my 98 5sfe, with only 50k on the clock and a new clutch made 114hp 127tq, back in the day.

Just a theory...the MR2's slipping clutch might have actually artificially inflated the torque reading, similar to how a torque converter works on an auto.

You peak torque numbers are hugey effected by boost control..Most of the time the torquemonsters are running a MBC which give a bit of a spike..My car does the same thing with my profec b but it holds torque very well across the board..AEM Tru Boost. Why do you ask?
