Does anyone know how to go about getting an emmissions waiver for a car?
I've got a 95 neon that runs on 100LL and I'm doubting it's going to pass.
I'm in the Lehigh Valley, PA area if that helps.

What happens if a vehicle fails the emissions inspection?
If a vehicle doesn’t pass the emissions inspection, you must make emissions-related
repairs. After these repairs are made, the vehicle can be re-inspected for free, within 30
calendar days, at the station that initially conducted the inspection. If you wait longer
than 30 days, or take the vehicle to a different emissions inspection station, the reinspection
is not free. In addition, if the vehicle still doesn’t pass the inspection, in most
cases you can get a one-year waiver if you have spent a minimum of $150 on
emissions-related repairs. In some cases, you may be required to spend more if the
needed repair is the only repair that will address the problem.

Yeah I've read through that. But there's no way around spending the $150 first? I dont want to waste my time trying to get this thing to pass emmissions if I can just get a waiver.
100LL is aviation fuel.

your pretty much in a tight spot, it's hard to find an inspection place that can write waivers, and most peo[ple that can are decently older. So you might have a very hard time trying to find a waiver.

simple...drive less than 5k a year... or wait another 3 years and get a classic title for it.
Also, go talk to your local tag place. There are a number of different vehicle titles out there, one (like classic) could make your car emissions exempt

I wasn't aware that you could put classic tags on a 95 model year car. The car wont get driven more than 5k miles a year. I've got a daily driver for that. This is simply a track car/pleasure vehicle. Not to mention, I just got a regular plate for it this morning.

you can't, that's why i said wait another 3 years :-)
Vehicles that are driven less than 5k miles per year are emissions exempt

right but that only applies to you if you owned the vehicle the year prior as well. And what fun is the car going to be if i have to wait a year to drive it? I was just hoping there was a way around the inevitable, guess not.

you get a 1 free pass for an emission expemption sticker. after that you have to show mileage.
and like scapegoat said, its under 5k a year
here is the law regarding classic plates so EVERYONE knows..

Like i said, the car wont be driven more than 5k miles a year, so them checking mileage doesn't bother me at all.
So basically what i'm looking at is I have to fail the emmissions tests and dump more money into the car before I can qualify for a waiver?

negative. When you go for your test, tell them you want an exemption sticker. they HAVE to give it to you.
I am exempt. every year you go back, just let them know you are exempt

i didnt read all this, but what you said is not true. ill show you in my 07 emission book. if a customer says his car/truck is exempt you have to check the back of stickers. if you can not read the back of the sticker they must have some kind of prove. if not you get a emission test.

thats not true either. for 95 and back they have to pass. if its 96 and newer and the emissions machine cant read the car/truck pcm it get a one year waiver. if the check engine light is on it fails.

Sled, i have a 1998 car. it is not using the factory PCM, so there is no CEL illuminated. i did drive less than 5Kmiles this year. does this mean i can get the car inspected and have it pass? or do you have to apply for emissions exemption first before I am eligible for it?
also, am i correct in assuming that just because you are exempt from the sniffer/diagnostic test that you still have to pass the visual test? IE: you must have a CAT, EGR, charcoal canister, etc?
Thanks.

i would think that u wouldnt need to pass any emissions test visual or not

make sure when you get your car inspected you state its probably emission exempt due to it being under 5k a year. you'll still get a emission sticker but it will say exempt on it.
as for the second question. if your car is exempt their is no visual for the emission end of the test. the inspection laws state that if it has it from the factory its gotta be there. Most tech dont check for it though if its exempt. i dont most of the time. as long as it has cats on it and they appear to be working i dont care. i know most tech do the same. they can be gutted out, it doesnt matter. they just have to look like their there. all in all, if your exempt most tech are not gonna bust your balls.

Way to go Mook, hijacking my thread lol. BTW, are you coming to the meet at Perkins on the 17th?
Anyway, so what's the best way for me to go about doing this? Should I just go in there and see if it passes? Or should I just say that I want an emmissions exempt sticker? The car came from Ohio, but the PO only drove it 3500 miles in the past year, will that make a difference whatsoever?

My Protege failed emissions the first time. They recommended paying $60 to get a waiver sticker next time. Done.

there is no way to get a exempt sticker if the car came from outta state. your gonna have to run it and let it fail. then get something dumb like a tune up for a $150. after that you can get a waiver. next year stay under 5k.

Sled- Im just going by what I've been through. never once was I denied for a sticker, and never once was I questioned about the CEL. when infact, if you are exempt, I dont think my car was ever scanned. And my car throws about 15 codes with the light gleaming in my face

if your car is exempt it doesnt get scanned. if their not checking your mileage to make sure, that their problem. they'll get nailed for it at some point.
