Turbo Hayabusa
They have been swapped into a couple Golfs, so it can't be that hard to put one in a 914.

I see the term "restore" is'nt as defined as it used to be. Anyway, a company called renegade something or other used to make all the bits needed for a sbc swap. But, I'll admit to some bias against any type of swap being something of an aircooled purist. What exactly is his intention with the car? If it's a well mannered, good handling street car, then a swap would only upset the balance.
These cars have what is called a type 4 aircooled flat 4. They can be built up to about 200 or so n/a and over 400 hp turboed whilst maintaining reliable streetability. They are very torquey with a broad powerband. However, in n/a form, peak hp production is limited by the head design so a good porter is necessary. Also, it is quite pricey to build these things up due to limited demand. Jake Raby, who I think is based in Georgia, is the best t4 engine builder out there at the moment.
