I am in the process of trying to sell my mustang for something still fun but a little better on gas and mild mods would make it a great ride. I was looking into mk4 gtis in the 1.8t model and was wondering if there were any common problems I should look for in these cars. Also, I wanted to know the rarity of the dark gray color they come in, I think its called silverstone...but I am not sure...I really love this color and would love to get it in that color but figured it was rare since its very hard to find one...Any help is greatly appreciated and thanks in advance
Eric

Most common problems are the coil packs going and sludge in the oil.
Hope this helps http://www.tristatetuners.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12054

Are you talking about platnium gray? I work at the dealer if you have any questions.

silverstone is VERY common...my advice is to go after a 20th, they come stock what most gti owners (like myself) have to add on to our cars (ex:front lip, side skirts, rear valence)...if your looking for a rare color in a 1.8t i'm not sure if there is one, the most rare colors i've seen are matchstick red, tropic orange, futura yellow, and rave green all of which i'm 95% sure came with the 12v VR6 motors...my buddy has a Tropic Orange gti and he loves bragging how he's one of like 300 in the U.S.
Matchstick Red:

Tropic Orange: this was the best pic i could find of the color (most of the pics looked red)

I had an 01 wolfsburg and it was nothing but problems. In one year I replaced the coil packs, plugs, wires, engine overlay harness, fuel lines from the tank, key fob, and gas cap all because of an engine misfire code on cylinder 3. That was all on a car with 50K on it. They are fun to drive, look great but are extremely quirky and it's hit or miss as to which one of the numerous problems you will have. A general given though are the coil packs. I should menion I am a huge VW fan and have owned 5 of them, but I kinda think you should know what you are getting into. From what I understand though your chances are a lot better if you're buying it new and take perfect care of it from the start.

thanks and my decision isnt made up yet for sure...i wish i could buy brand new...but i dont have that great of a job and going back to night classes in spring...right now its between a gti and an svt focus...i think i get more all around performance from the gti but save alot less money...the svt has about 170hp but has the winter package and can be had for the same price with around 30k less miles

you could pay a LITTLE bit more and get an 04 350z...and have a rear wheel drive car that will go nowhere in the snow

haha thanks for the edit on that quote heather...part of my reasoning for getting rid of my car is because of the rwd...i need to get places in the snow...and no offense to 350z owners cause i love them do death...but i would rather but the extra money into my car to and have way more power and all than the 350...but less style...haha

lilredvdub...not too into red cars but any more info on it??

i would go with the 20th at leats you dont have to worry about getting lips and getting it painted.

You just got that car and are saying all over that it's your first RWD car. What problems would you have had in the middle of Oct. with temps in 80's lol.
