I'm new to the forums, I did search for this but nothing came up because the topic is so old.
To explain: I'm picking up an 86 Jetta with only 43,000 miles can't go wrong with that, unless you're a VW hater. The only downside is that it has an automatic transmission. I've done some reading on here and I know it's possible to swap out an automatic for a manual, but if anyone could help me out and tell me what I need it would be greatly appreciated. I know I need the transmission but I'm in the dark as to what kind or the additional parts I would need to do this kind of a project.
Could anyone please help me out and tell me/ list all the parts necessary for this kind of project. Thank you very much for the help, and any help is greatly appreciated.

And if you really feel nice does anyone want to throw in some extra info as to if the motor of that year can hold alot of power and if anyone knows off hand the weight of the 86 Jetta I would be much obliged.

Thank you for taking the time to read all this.

Ask on VWvortex.com or a jetta specific forum. Not to many VW people on here.

My one buddy was going to do this to his golf, but ended up withing it being totaled. From what he told me, you would need the shifter box, knob and rod and what not, pedals, trans. I am pretty sure any vw 4cyl trans would work, well the older ones (possibly look for one from a GLI). Not sure about the ECU, my guess is you would need to swap that out as well.
Just wanted to bump this up and give a bit of info. Not 100% on it, i would go with DropTop's suggestion and check the vortex.
