I'm new to the forums, I did search for this but nothing came up because the topic is so old.
To explain: I'm picking up an 86 Jetta with only 43,000 miles can't go wrong with that, unless you're a VW hater. The only downside is that it has an automatic transmission. I've done some reading on here and I know it's possible to swap out an automatic for a manual, but if anyone could help me out and tell me what I need it would be greatly appreciated. I know I need the transmission but I'm in the dark as to what kind or the additional parts I would need to do this kind of a project.
Could anyone please help me out and tell me/ list all the parts necessary for this kind of project. Thank you very much for the help, and any help is greatly appreciated.

And if you really feel nice does anyone want to throw in some extra info as to if the motor of that year can hold alot of power and if anyone knows off hand the weight of the 86 Jetta I would be much obliged.

Thank you for taking the time to read all this.

i can tell you now...its not worth the trouble in an 86 jetta. Unless you were planning on taking out that motor and putting something a little beefier than that little 16v or 8v?

I actually do plan to put in a newer 1.8t or the 2.2. I've seen it done in a few older Jetta's. Any help as to what I need?

Would it be easier/ cheaper to just buy a manual car?

I'm probably still gonna get a VW but idk about havin' all that work done. How much would that run me and how long would the car be out?

as for how long the car would be down. if you were to do it yourself it could be down for months, if it were at a shop...depending on how busy they are and the skill/experience in doing a swap down time could range anywhere from a couple weeks to a month or two if it were all done in one shot. i would expect to dish out a few grand. I paid 900 to have a local dsm shop install my clutch....that price includes the part.

Actually the swap would be done in a few hours, my friends friend, if you followed that, has done it on a couple 240 sx's and is down to about a day. But as for the motor swap you're probably right on the month to two months.
