a friend of a friend has a 2003 VW with the 2.8l vr6 engine in it. she's being told that she blew two pistons through the block and is being quoted by VW $5-6k to replace it for her. Is there anywhere she could go to get an engine for less than that and have it installed?

I would check L&T enterprises in Allentown, just call them up and see if he can quote ya on one.
Hope it helps. Ill ask around with some of my buddies in the area.

You could try calling NLS(Nothing Leaves Stock) in Coopersburg to see if Josh can help.
