View Full Version : First thing to do to new WRX
Newbie WRX
07-19-2005, 09:56 PM
Hey guys,
I just picked up a new 2005 WRX and was wondering what I should do first. I notice a little lag in the begining of the gears. So I was wondering what does everyone think I should do first?
Oh yeah... Does anyone know what size bulbs are used in the WRXs? I dont want to take the assembly apart and the manual tells me I have HID. Which I don't.
Thanks guys

WRXs dont have HIDs. STis do.
Get an uppipe, it will allow the turbo to begin spooling a few hundred RPMs sooner.
Or get some new rims and drop that **** on Cusco coilovers.

The bulb size is in the manual, i dont remember off the top of my head. Sylvanias website has a sizing thing on it by car as well as good bulbs. Sorry for posting twice in a row

I always think you should mod your suspension first.

The truth of the matter is.....you are not gonna have nearly as much fun if you are worried about your warranty! haha :supz: .........IMO, i would buy in this order.
1. Uppipe
2. Springs
3. Downpipe
4. Catback
5. Rear endlinks
6. 3-way adjustable swaybar
7. Wheels/Tires
8. Some decent gauges i.e. Boost, EGT (will help with tuning your EMS)
9. E.ngineM.anagementS i.e. Cobb Accessport, TurboXS UTEC, etc.
That should have you up and moving pretty nicely, until you get the modify bug and go absolutely apesh!t and start upgrading your turbo, injectors, fuel pump, etc. etc. etc......And of course buy some cosmetic and electronic gadgets along the way. Just check out some forums....clubWRX.net and nasioc.com and you'll learn what and what not to do. There are threads upon threads of "what mods should i do first" Good luck!

h1 low and 9005 high
For mods...
1. (and the most important) Boost gauge
2. Up-pipe
3/ K&N drop-in
...that should be a good, basic starting point

Read this, it is the most important thing you will need to know.

also do you know about the break-in period? what is it- don't go over 3k rpm till 1k miles or something??? i got mine used so i didn't have to do it but i remember that from mike getting his '04...
http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm read that about break in, its really interesting, but it doesnt really say much about boosted, but I could see it being the same concept.
I read it yesterday its a really interesting article.
And like everyone else is saying if you're worried about warranty stfu and do nothing, sell the car and buy a used car w/o a warranty since youll be doing most of the work anyway and have fun with it

1. Learn to drive the car. Learn to shift the car delicately and smoothly.
2. Drive car until it feels painfully slow
3. Buy up-pipe, catless TBE, UTEC and have them installed/tuned
4. Repeat step #1
5. Repeat step #2
6. Remove mods and trade in WRX on EVO or STI
7. If thinking of modding further for more HP, re-read step #6
...
20. Become like me. :D
I would not remove the snorkus/airbox at all. 04+s don't seem to like them removed for some reason.

at least he mentioned engine management to be included with any exhaust changes. if i didn't have engine management, the only change I would make power wise on a stock scooby is an uppipe. all other mods are pointless and can be detrimetal, especially with the 05 ECU.
IMO - i would go with the second list, but I'm more of a suspension guy anyway...

Suspension is a great starting point for the WRX.
Hey....how about you buy my springs.
