Will a car pass inspection w/o power steering?

My old car did in PA. A car designed to have P/S with a failure is hard as hell to drive at low speeds. The tech will have to drive it and he will most likely fail it just for that to make money on the fix.

Technically it's not a safety issue. You could inform the customer of the tightness in steering, but it's not a necessary part. It's an accessory.

If they fail you for it, they're trying to rip you off. The state inspection courses do not make mention of that being necessary. Ever.

i might still fail it. i dont really consider it an accessory since its kinda necessary if the car was equipped with it to begin with. because a car that didnt originally have power steering isnt that hard to turn. but a car that did have power steering and now isnt working is. you would have to catch me on a ****ty day though.

if the steering isnt working properly i would fail it. i dont want to put stickers on a car and have the customer get into an accident because they could steer the car quick enough.

It's an easy enough rectification though.

If someone removes their power steering, loops the lines to keep fluid in the rack, and sets the caster to a more negative setting, then it would be very easy to turn even the heaviest vehicle. Power steering is not a necessity, it's an accessory. All it does is allow for a more positive caster and easier movement of the wheel. Take it off with that kind of positive caster and you won't be able to move ****. Move the caster more negative and it turns a lot easier, it just doesn't autocenter as well.

If I was eliminating my power steering to make room for a different setup? Sure.

If it was broken? Depending on where it was broken. If the pump was bad, I might just say fugg it and loop the lines and change my alignment. If the rack was bad, I'd replace it.

Correct. Even with negative caster it will still come back, but it will be...different. Positive makes it swing back faster. Negative is more play.

Think of it this way. You're riding a bike and the fork of the front is facing towards you like this \. It makes it very easy to go straight because it likes to stay centered. Now, you have one of those sport brake equalizers on the bars so you can spin them around. So you spin the fork all the way around, and ride it backwards. Now the fork is away from you like this /. It's a LOT harder to keep it straight, but it steers really easy.

This is also an extreme example with a lightweight object. A car weighs more and the adjustments are nearly as extreme, but it helps to understand it.

My Talon didnt have PS below 2k, Dont ask me why but it just didnt...And My Taurus now has a bad PS Pump and it feels like my First car which didnt have PS at all at low speeds, It's a Bitch to turn and park...But I dont think it would fail inspection....Unless the guys a Dick Like we already mentioned.

I never had a problem with it. Then again, PS racks without looped lines are a bitch and four thirds to turn without a caster adjustment. Non-PS racks are easier than an unlooped PS rack. Not sure why. Looped PS racks are easier than non-PS racks though.

Depends on how much you put in and how strong you are.

If you're a skinny computer nerd, your best bet is to go extreme and just stick it at 55mph and no more.

If you've actually got some muscles, you can get away with less negative and still top some speed charts. Again, all in preference, driving style, and strength.
