View Full Version : Can a turbo change the sound of a BOV?

When I had my HKS SQV on with my stock turbo it was loud and obnoxious, not with my 16g. its loud but blows off faster and then sounds like it flutters a little. Is that normal? Everything works fine, or at least feels that way.

when i put the b16g on my car it changed the way my bov sounded....before it used not be as loud and it would let off quicker....it seems like it is louder now and it sounds like it's letting out more air its hard to describe

thats kinda what im experiencing. it kinda reminds me of a supra

If it's fluttering, it's probably compressor surge. I've never used a SQV, is it a adjustable?

Yeah, the bigger turbine that has more momentum is gonna push more air out of the valve when you lift. That can definitely change the way the valve sounds.

I thought it was surge at first, but im not positive. I cant see why it would surge at all though. I used it before and it worked fine. its also only maybe 2 months old. like I said, it blows off perfectly fine.
Also the flow on my stock TDO4 was around 370. My 16g flows around 525. Could that have anything to do with it?

Well think about it, the bigger turbo takes longer to spin up so it's gonna take longer to spin down too. The bigger compressor also moves more air so through the combined larger momentum and greater air flow you're gonna push a lot more air out of the little valve.

Does is sound more like this or more like V8.

when you start to run more boost(volume) thats when the actual sequential part of the blow off valve works so after the large blow off happens if there is still some boost in the intake pipe it will blow off the smaller valve in the center...or so this is how i understand it to work...
Buster

thats what it feels like. my psi is still the same as it was before but like you said its the volume that changed. If I remember correctly the SQV has quite a few chambers that its regulates on its own

I watched alot of videos and all of them that had surge did it at idle. mine only does it within boost.

how much pounds are you running? the ssq has that sound up untill 8-10psi then any above that you get the real loud sound

im running 19, i put the stocker back on. I think there might be something wrong with it. Its basically all flutter, and I still have an internal wastegate, a top mount and im really not running that much boost. Im gonna give Extreme PSI a call tonight or tomorrow and see if i can have it checked. or replaced.

I think thats pretty much normal for it to sound like that, Most DSM's who run HKS Blowoffs have the flutter, Didnt you have the Type RS before this one?

No this is like hard core flutter, im gonna have to put it on for someone else to see. it just scares me because i really dont think it should sound like this.
Like it does the usual skeet and then goes wub wub wub real fast.

Taken off that site...
Why do I have surge (a woo woo woo woo sound) on my SSQV?
1.
This is a result of the valve not pulling the valve open, while the turbo compressor is spinning. The air gets "stuck" in the system and slowly returns causing a repeating woo woo woo sound.
2.
The HKS SSQV needs high air flow on the back of the valve and a strong vacuum source to pull the valve open. On some cars where the bov is positioned in an odd location, this may not be possible at part throttle. The turbo is creating lots of air, but little to no boost has reached the manifold due to a pressure loss across the IC.
3.
You can re-locate the valve and/or get a stronger vacuum source to help combat this effect. You want a thick single line straight the manifold for a vacuum source, as short as possible.
4.
Mild surge at little to no boost levels will not damage your turbo.
5.
If you are worried about this noise, you may want to consider re-installing your original bypass valve in addition to the SSQV so that the air flow at part throttle can be released as intended. Otherwise, you may want to change to a push type blow off valve that will operate on less of a vacuum sourc

SSQ also have an insert that makes them sound alot differnt. The purple insert sounds like the BOV on that GTR.

no insert, just the facorty triple fin, silver. I just cant understand why it sounds soooo different then everyone elses. but its not broke.

I'v put them on cars before and they sounded like a greddy type s. Then I'v also put one on a 4th gen supra with a pt76 and it sounded just like that skyline.

more cfm can def change the way a bov sounds.
piping: length, diameter, different location of bov.
you can take the same car with the same mods, change the location of bov and get a different tone. as long as your vac is fine and the diaphram in the bov didnt take a crap youre fine.

Can I have it to pair with my Tial BOV? I might need a 2nd BOV.
J/K..I wonder what it would sound like with 2 different BOVs on my car.

The real sad thing though is that it sounds totally bad ass, it just would suck if there was something wrong with it.

i had the ssqv self adjusting one.. it pissed me off to much which is why i now have your old rs lol

psi is only the measurement of the backflow, not total air. its very likely your new turbo is moving a different amount of air for the same psi. if you've got a wideband you could see the difference there...except you drive one of those new fangled cars with the learning computers ;)
