I would avoid Dinan. Their claim to fame is the warranty, which doesn't exist if its an '00 car. They are generally way overpriced for the amount of power they give (or don't give). You might contact John Miller of millaracing.com. He's local to the Tri-State area and has connections for BMW/Porsche/Audi/etc. mods. Tell him Patrick sent you.

you can do boost on a stock motor, with studs if you want the extra protection, but I am running 9lbs on my supercharged S52(98 M3) without any problems. He is going to be hurting for power on that car unless he has some cash to put down.
NA mods are going to be so unimpressive that you might as well tell him to hold off and save up for forced induction. That or trading the car in on an older M car or a model up. I only say that because the 323 wasn't hugely popular with power mods so they will be few and far between + $$$.
If he insists on it, go with exhaust and cams. Those would be the best bang for the buck.

For just some smaller power, then yea, cams, tune, and exhaust. Buddy of mine just got started on his project M3 (95), and so far, thats what he did for more power.

well if you do exhaust its just going to get louder with a small boost in power, plus auto cars with exhaust sound dookie:(. get him setup with an intake and a tune, it'll sound faster without being obnoxious and the tun will help throughout the powerband.

They don't deal with BMW's.
Audi's, VW"s, and Porsche's.
Mod's for a 323 are gonna be few. Forget the engine and tell him to do a wheel/suspension set-up.
And yes, skip the basic Dinan products. Their FI kits are put together well, but you pay for it. For more minor items,CAI/Exhausts, there are comprobable and less expensive manufacturers out there.

Nope, just look at the site. Dinan is usually the big name for the BMW crowd, but again, they are overpriced. Just look around on different BMw forums, see what people are buying.

dont you ever, ever post a bmw question in off topic again.
edit: ^dry humor^ just for those who inevitably wont catch it. but seriously, if this doesn't belong in the 'bmw tech' section then what does?

Okay if he is set on doing it it uses an M52 motor, which was rated at 170hp. The M52 was put into the 3-series from 96-2002 in a few incarnations. If it has vanos which I can't remember, You can get E36 M3 cams and put them in. This will give a decent boost on top of the intake and exhaust. I would also do the OBDI intake manifold which will give you almost as much of a kick as the cams would.
The intake manifold would be the least expensive next to the intake at about 200 for everything you need, the cams can be sourced used for a few 100 probably. The exhaust gets pricey but is available in the form of supersprint knockoffs for a decent price.
Good luck! The 523 and the 323 use the same motors and the 523 should be heavier btw...

That is if you can overlook their Stage 1 S/C kit for the e46 M3 not coming with an intercooler :bigeek:

this thread makes me roffle.
if you have an '00 E46 323 and want more power, consider going for a diff upgrade at best. as dolphin mentioned, a suspension/tire upgrade would be a good step as well and lighter wheels/tires will provide a slight gain for you as well.
unfortunately, the M52B25TU has very few upgrades when it comes to motor work so you'll have to look elsewhere for upgrades.

just so you guys know, someone told me that BMW has dropped Dinan. BMW is now gonna produce their owner performance parts. In the tristate area, only BMW of the Main Line will be the performance parts center.

not entirely true. bmw never had a deal with dinan. dinan has deals with individual dealerships and private shops but NEVER directly with bmw.
BMW Performance, as the lines being called, will be available from EVERY bmw dealership across the country. part numbers etc are already available via the TIS and will be available as soon as bmw makes the official unveiling.
