I found one for $500.. Automatic, needs a battery and a heater core. First, is this a good deal?

And, is there a performance after-market for Mark 3 Jettas at all? Looking at Andy's to get a feel for any brands that make stuff, the only thing I can find are some Pacesetter headers. Is it popular to do a later-model engine swap or something?

Also, an automatic-Manual swap.. how hard do you think that one would be.

depending on overall condition, it could be a hell of a deal, but not if you're looking for a fast car. what engine is in it? that would determine a lot but its probably a base model which is great for mileage but not for going fast.
if thats the case and you decide not to get it, please let me know where i can get more info on it as i'm looking for something slow as balls but gets 30 mpg :)

if you dont own a performance shop or have the tools and equipment dont talk motor and tranny swap. its not worth it.

my 2.0 liter jetta gets 30mpg easy but makes around 90whp. they are slow as ****, and useless as a performance car unless you swap a VR6 into it. And before you buy it, make sure the transmission does not slip! Volkswagen makes horrible automatic transmissions, and just plain ****ty manual transmissions. Check for rust too.

on second thought, for 500 bucks it's not worth it. you can find a perfect running one for 1000-1500 with no problems. i found mine almost two years ago for 2 grand with 130k miles. keep your eyes open for a manual 2.0 liter, they're not hard to find.

Heater cores are a bitch to replace.
And my uncle's friend who is a VW die-hard did a auto to manual swap in his Jetta. And after the swap he said, "Never again".

You're better off getting a mk4 turbo GTI.

Well a little food for thought.....My hubby has a 1993 passat vr6 wagon. We bought the car for $400. It had a blown motor 'cause some idiot put the oil filtor on backwards. I got a motor and trans for $600. The car was an automatic and he swaped the motor and put a manual trans in it at the same time. It took him 3 days total. He had to do the wiring as well cause it was orignally a 16v. It is not that hard. I watched him do it and helped with the wiring. It all depends if the car has rot or wiring problems. With dubs, you can find the parts cheap as hell if you know where to look

Well, if you are looking for performance, and I take it that you are, the auto has to go as stated earlier. What has not been mentioned is that the 2.0 crossflow is an excellent motor to modify, especially to turbo. In stock form they obviously do'nt have much grunt, but they have strong internals and can get away with a lot boosted and properly tuned. N/A, they take kindly to mods too but, in a heavy jetta, it's simply not worth the effort. Do'nt rule out the bbm lysholm kit as well. The vr6 sounds better and has greater potential, but it does'nt take much to get some respectable performance out of the 2.0(although it is better suited for a lighter car).

If your looking for a performance car your looking at the wrong car. If your looking for a cheap performance car go buy a dsm.
