View Full Version : Thinking about getting a Mk2 GTI for a daily driver. Good idea? What should I know?

I've been toying with the idea of getting a daily driver... went through the ideas of something like a Civic, a Neon, or even an older Impreza wagon, which are all reasonable choices. Today I thought how cool it would be to get a sweet Mk2 GTI... I don't know much about them so I'm not sure how reasonable it is or if its just asking for a heap of trouble, so I was hoping some of the VW guys on here could educate me.
I'm looking for something that is going to get good mileage. I'm looking for something that is reasonably reliable--doesn't have to be perfect and I understand that a used car and an older car will have problems arise, but I just don't want a money pit or a headache. Also don't want it to be too expensive.
From what I've read and been told so far, the Mk2 GTI is actually a pretty damn good choice, and I think they're totally badass to boot. I'd really prefer to find something stock or very close to it, and maintained well. I'd just plan to continue to keep it in good shape and maybe do wheels and possibly lower it, but I really think that would be the end of it.
So... tell me if you agree or not, and if there is a better year, engine, etc. I should be looking for, and also common problems I should look out for.
Thanks!
Bryan

not ready to buy yet, but something like this seems perfect... its well maintained and looks super clean in and out. not sure how concerned i should be with mileage but it seems a lot of these have some rust issues or other problems.
anyway, this one looks nice... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Excellent-condition-Highway-miles-Never-smoked-in_W0QQitemZ220118278342QQihZ012QQcategoryZ15292QQ rdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Its difficult finding a MK2 GTI that is in reasonable running condition.
I would look at a MK3 instead. But it depends on what you're lookin to spend.
But I have a two good books on water-cooled VWs I can lend you.
I'll also keep my eyes open on VWFixx is a good deal comes around.

i think corrados are sick but i really dont want a toy or a project, i just want something that i'm not gonna be tempted to mess with much and is just reliable and gets good mileage.
that brings me to the GTI cause i think they're badass looking but i dont see any reasonable means to make them fast, they're just a sweet cruising car to me. i think i could put some wheels on it and lower it a bit and be done, just keep it looking good and running well.
so we have established that it will be tough to find one that has been kept up well, but that they are out there, and if i find one that hasnt been abused it could be a good, mostly-headache-free daily? is the one i posted above good or what?

yeah vortex has a ton of cars but a lot of them are just in fair condition and need work. i'm kind of a perfectionist and i'm not looking for a huge project at least with this one so it would either need to be kept up meticulously or only need some minor stuff to get it back to looking and running great. at least for this car i'd prefer to pay a bit more and have something thats rust free with good paint and no stains/rips on the interior, and just well maintained in general. its all new to me but in my head i'd be ecstatic to pick up one of these in particularly good condition for $3000-$3500 which seems to higher priced than the avg.
so if mileage and reliability are my priorities, and being fast isnt, should i have an order of preference on 1.8 vs. 2.0 and 8v vs. 16v?
i just picked that car cause it seemed like the interior and exterior were pristine (except for roof) but i agree the engine is real high mileage.

i dont like VW's. the people i have known that drove them had nothing but problems so i guess my opinion is tainted? stock or modified they are a bitch to work on, complete jig saw puzzles.
i would recommend an older BMW. parts will probably be the same cost wise but the BMWs hold up much better overall. (88-92ish)

Troll, if you're serious talk to Rob with the purple Type-R swapped Civic tonight at the meet. He's had 6 or 7 MKII Gti's, and still has a red one that is going to be getting a VR6 swap. He'll be able to answer any questions you have.
Awesome choice BTW. Those cars are an absolute BLAST to drive quickly, even stock. The MKIII's aren't nearly as fun. I've been toying with the same idea.

Yeah I'm definitely stuck on getting a Mk2... I've always liked GTI's but for one that I don't care about speed, this one has the most style in my eyes for sure.
I think I'd just like to be patient (or lucky?) and find a gem... the one thats just in particularly good condition. Pricing on them for ones in ok condition seems to be 1500-2000, good condition seems to be 2000-2500, and really good condition is rare but they seem to be like 3500ish.
and yeah tell Rob to go tonight if he wasn't planning to already. I'd love to pick his brain and see if he knows of anything in the area.

I got my corrado slc for $6000 with 90,000 miles, beatiful paint, and interior was immaculate. But the sunroof didn't work, some of the dash lights decided not to work sometimes. The electrical systems are crazy, but for a 93 it had fully adjustable seats, up, down, recline, forward, and backward. Not to mention the windows go up when you hold the key in the lock position on the door the little things like that, make vdubs unique..what i'm trying to say is vw's have a lot of personality, and there designs are timeless, especially on their older models. I think its a great idea.

Troll go with the mk2 GTI, i love the way they look. If you can get it with the 2.0 in it and drive it like a grandma you can get crazy gas mileage. The pic you posted up earlier was one hell of a clean car. I get decent gas mileage out of my 8v 2.0. But beware they do have small little annoying problems, but if you arnt worried about that so much the motor should last you forever with regular maintenance. 140K and still pulling strong.

Well I guess I will Chime in. I have owned over 7 Vdubs. I had a MK2 GTI and an rocco..
I love the older GTI's I would try and find a 16v the 8v was really slow. not that the 16 was a speed demon.. If you can find a 87 16v i think best GTI ever. Like any used car you will have issues. Rust, and electrical. If the car was mantained you should be ok. You can still get lots of good parts for reasonable price. I think the one you have listed here is priced high. If you find one in good shape you will end up paying more kinda stinks but guess you pay for good care...
Other than that I can't think of anything off the top of my head that was a real issue with the car. I had belt issue with my 87 rocco.. Hell if you can find an 89 GTI 16v pick it up.

If you want power, get the 16v. If it's just a daily driver to get you around, an 8v is ideal.
Several differences within the MK2 span:
85-86: GTI are 8v
87-89: GTI are 1.8 16v, no 8v. The 8V during these years is the GT trim(minus rear disc and sport seats). 89 MY, lowest 16v produced.
90-92: 8v & 2.0 16v with quad headlamps.
85-89: Small bumpers
90-92: Big bumper covers
85-88 all & 89 16V: CIS-E Fuel Injection System
89 8v & 90-92 all: Digifant Fuel Injection System
Problems to look out for on the 16v: Timing Belt
Troll, have you even given the Scirocco MK2's a thought?

I think it's a good idea, get one. If you catch Rob or PT they both know their stuff and are at Fresh Works most of the time.
And they're so easy to work on... I don't know why someone would think otherwise. They're tiny, basic inline 4's and fit together like Lego's. There's a reason so many VW guys do their own work.
If I see or hear of any nice ones up for sale I'll let you know. Please get a MKII (and not anything newer), those cars have so much soul.

yeah i really want to find a diamond in the rough, but not sure which one that'll be. dont need to get it right away but hopefully something will come up in the next couple of months. i've really taken a liking to black, but i'm not going to count out other colors (although i'm not big on the red or teal much). does the one i linked from vortex sound pretty special or something that'll come around often enough? he said it doesnt really have any rust but he did bring up that it was repainted by a previous owner so i guess the quality of that job is up in the air.
anyway, this car is sex via sheetmetal so i figured i'd post it. dont think i'll ever take one this far though because then it would no longer be a 'daily driver'

Check out L&T Enterprizes in Allentown. They have some used car FS also. They also happen to be a VW parts recycler.
What some people are now doing is TDI swaps. Get a 99-03 TDI motor...chip & injectors are already good for about the 250-ish lb-ft range, AND still get excellent fuel economy. I still consistently get around 55 mpg on the highway on road trips.
If you want the car to handle, yet forgiving in crappy PA & NJ (and NYC) streets--- www.srsvw.com
I have also seen MK3 Dash swaps and MK4 Dash swaps also

For a cruiser, I'd pick a 8v over the 1.8 16v. You do'nt feel the difference until it's tached up. Both motors are quite robust internally(well, except for my old one), but the ancillaries(alt, pumps, little stuff) tend to go if original.
When you look at a prospect, it's quite easy to determine if a mk2 is a basketcase or not. Be certain all the hoses are good with no vacuum leaks or anything. Obviously, make sure the headgasket is'nt leaking and the cooling system is up to snuff. When you test drive it, go into 5th gear(do'nt even ponder the auto tranny). Worn shift rod bushings or a linkage problem are very common. You will probably prefer a digifant car for a daily. I like cis better, but digi has more consistant mannerisms. Oh yeah, if the door handles work, you found a prime example! The build quality of these cars, in regards to the trim and such, is very hit and miss. You either get a very solid car, or one where the bumpers, external trim, and dash pieces fall off on a daily basis. Really prod around for rust as well. On the test drive, listen for a klunking sound over bumps.
Although I'm an aircooled person through and through, mk2's have always held a place in my anahata chakra. I dailied a '91 jetta carat for a while. Got it at a donation lot for 600 bucks. Power windows, sunroof, nice for what it was. Excellent cruiser until I lost oil pressure and sold it to someone who was gonna do a vr swap(he never got around to it). Did good for 600 though. Had an 88 jetta gl as well for about a week until I stupidly gave it to someone to use until he could pay me for it. Ha, how can I forget Dumborah's '88 jetta gl auto! Good times in that car. Good luck on your purchase. I'll also keep a look out for an example.

but it def looks like a fun car to mod and daily drive. i figure it would get good mpg if you drove it like a granny

Which wouldn't be out of the norm for Troll..... :finga:
Looks nice, and it seems to be what you have been searching for. You'll NEVER find exactly what you want, so I say just do it.

Yes, that is nicer than the norm(seemingly, you never know with a mk2 until you look at it), but it's still a 1800-2500 dollar car. If you think that you wont find a nicer mk2 in the area, then go for it and try and shimmy the price down. Personally, I'd take this for $3500 over that: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3210594

Do you know if the sunroof works? Do all of the dash lights work? If that car has been up for sale for a while, you can prob get it for $3000 offer it to him, tell him you just started looking, and if you sound confident that your not going to buy it for $3500 he'll do it, if not you can get it for 35. But bluebook value means close to nothing on rare cars, and everyone has their own idea of rare, but good luck with it or with finding another one.

ok this isnt going to help ya all that much but just this weekend, driving from bloomsburg to allentown(~90 miles) and back again i averaged 33mpg (2.0L 8v) max speed for this trip maybe 70 to pass someone. That includes carting my girlfriend around allentown (~30 miles of stop and go). Just make sure u do check alot of the electrical stuff and make sure the sunroof doesnt leak (mine just started to the other day :( )

i'm not interested in a jetta, and i'm not interested in a vr6, and i'm not interested in a hackjob... sooooo even though that car is priced the same as the slow one i'm looking at, i'm all about going slow and looking damn good while i do it.
update is... i found out the entire car was repainted, and obviously not very well since its peeling on the roof, and part of the hatch, and part of the drivers side door frame... i mean it seems real good except that its got a crap paintjob... i am going to try to go look at it on friday but honestly... i dont want a car with crap paint and i'm not trying to sink $2k on a new paintjob that looks decent so i'm not sure how this one is going to pan out. pretty frustrating, but thats how it goes.
so i'm going ot go look at that one most likely, but i'm not calling off the search party yet, the hunt continues...

Go look at it, test everything out, and i mean EVERYTHING you can think of. Talk to the guy about the car, see if in person you can get him to drop the price a bit, i mean for mine i dropped 3K on it with 138K on the clock and its a 94. Most of the mk2 gtis that i see are going for around 3K as well, but what can i say they are just soo sexy.
But the one you posted above is definately very clean and when you go and look and drive you will know if you wanna drop the cash on it. Make sure to double check when he had the timing done.

yeah the car sounds lke its real solid all around with most of the receipts too, butttt even if its perfect, its still not worth $3k or $3.5k if it'll require another $2k in paint to look how it should. na' mean?

lol yeah, is it currently inspected, insured? non orignal paint may be a sign of an accident, because lots of accidents go unreported the carfax can be clean, but new paint is kinda shady especially if its not a good job. but the car looks pretty.

yeah he said it was backed into and had a few panels replaced and had the car repainted. i dunno, like i said i'm still planning to go check it out just to get my feet wet but damn i wish it was original paint in decent shape.

if i found a real nice BMW E30 3-Series i'd definitley think hard about that considering price is similar and so is mileage.
i hate being patient, this sucks!

take the BMW. the kid sounds like he pocketed the insurance money and half ass'd the repair job, which is probably why he is selling it.

i sold my 92 gti with a fresh motor ,tranny with a diff ,lowered ,fresh paint ,head ported ,cam ,techtonics 1 3/4" jet hot coated race header ,and an nx nos system ..2.0 8v with forged pistons ,sct rods for $6500 last year ..
the 2.0 8v motors are indistructable and hold well to boost ..i went 11.4 for a few years on junkyard high milage motors ...
heres what i sold look to spend around 4 -6 k for a nice mk2..ive had 5 turbo vw and 9 all together 2 were nos the gti listed below went high 12,s

like you said before look for rot ..and check for smoothness in the tranny they are vw weakest point ..ive seen a few electrical problems but most were due to seals that started leaking and werent taken car of in a timely fashon and the water in the car lead to problems ..also no other cars handles qite like an mk2 gti ..i had a 95 integra back in the day but it was a not so close second ..

A friend of mine has an 85 Gti 8v as a rallycar and has a couple others he is going to turn into street cars. He knows quite a bit about mk2's in general. I can shoot you his email if you want it. An 8v is def the way to go for a daily driver as has already been said before. I've rode in 8v's before and they had plenty of go for driving around town. My dad had an 87 Golf Gt (4 door Gti basically) and it's a shame that car was gone before I could get it as a hand me down.

love that gti 1badimport... i've got rpf-1s on my wrx :)
i'm still talking to the guy with the 1991 16v that i posted photos of earlier... going to try to check it out this week. he's desperate to sell and price has been dropping, so it really depends how bad the paint turns out to be. i'd prefer an 8v but i dont think i can lose either way.
