View Full Version : What daily to buy.

S4toSTI

Requirements:
1. Must be a new car.
2. Must be a 4 cylinder.
3. Must be good on gas.
4. Must cost under 20k sticker.
5. Must be able to fit an after market radio in it.

Thats about it.
Must be a japanese car is kinda of a requirement but not really.

I was leaning towards a mini for a while but 25k is alittle much for a daily in my mind.

Current ideas are:
Sentra S maybe not this one since the dash looks intergrated if i have to have one of these cars i atleast wanna put a nice radio in it.
Civic Coupe or Sedan
Scion Tc

Any other ideas let me know.

And no i don't wanna but you old beat up something or other sorry nothing used.

I'd pick the Scion, but then I'd have to have them install stuff from TuRD...like the suspension crap and supercharger. So I guess in the end if I want to spend as little as possible probably the Sentra.

I love they way they look now, like little Altima's

The fit is about 17k and for that i can get a civic so i am thinking i may hate the fit after a week but then again i don't know i haven't driven the fit. I did drive the civic tho and it felt alot nicer then 17k.

You could really pick a very nice 2-3 year old used SAAB from a SAAB dealer for that money. 50K is barely broken in for a 9-5. My 01 aero was dynoed at 235whp at 85K, meaning it somehow gained 5whp in it's 6 years of life. But SAABs depreciate like rocks, someones loss can be your gain. Despite the fact that my car is 6 years old, it still feels like a 40K car, even though it's only worth 12K.

But if you really want a new car, you could probably get a last year 9-3SS for around 20K, or this years for 25K if you haggle well (but probably not).

But I think slightly used SAAB is the best bet, so much car for the money.

Yeah european ftl.

Would you even consider a slightly used TDI? Yes they are more expensive to buy but I would think if you are planning on keeping the car for a long time (200k-300k miles) it might be worth it in the long run. I could be totaly wrong though, since I havent crunched the numbers. I do beleive the tdi's require less maintence than a regular gas engine. Longer oil change intervals even.

You are correct they run about 5k for the oil changes my dad has one. He loves to brag to people that he gets almost 50mpg and currently diesel is cheaper than 87 around here. If you are going to use it as a dd and not really beat on it then it should easily last 200k+

The question is how slow do you wanna go to save fuel. If you just wanna save fuel get a Scion xA or a Yaris, 1.5 liter engine and 100 hp. Trouble is I think a car that hits 60 in more than 8 seconds is too slow. Could go for a Corolla, that has a bit more engine, but they're boring.

I really don't care i drive 5.5 miles to work and its all 35 zones so i don't really care plus i have enough tickets i could use to have a car that isn't fast enough to get me in trouble. Not a fan of the looks on the xa and a corolla feels cheap to me the civic and the tc feel like quality cars atleast.

I am sorry i didn't see the questions.

Are you looking more for gas mileage or looks or what?I want something that looks nice and i would like something that is good on gas. The tc at 23 mpg gallon is not my idea of good but i do like the look of it. I don't know id that helps. I am not ruling the scion out but i am saying 23mpg kinda sucks.

Do you wanna stripped 'higher end' car or a loaded 'lower end' car... and im my opinion if you really are gettin it for a DD thennnn you probably shouldnt get a car you might want to mod, ie- tC, civic si... If i have money to mod this car after starting whatever other project i start on they well be surprised. I am not looking to mod anything i get besides maybe wheels and a stereo system. I think that i would rather a car that is a tad lower end that has more amenities.

Fit=1-2 month waiting list at most dealers
Tc=Too porky/heavy and gas mileage sucks
Sentra=ugly
Rabbit=too heavy and gas mileage sucks. Decent motor though
Civic=Great. Stay away from the options and you'll hit the sub $20k mark
Mazda 3= Awesome car to drive.
Mini=6 speed and 32 mpg. No options and you could get for around $18-$19k.

How can you say no to all those cars and say ehh to the ugliest sentra ever made? lol

You could get a base model mini even though i vote for a big NO on it (http://www.edmunds.com/new/2007/mini/cooper/coupe/compact/index.html)

wtf is wrong with the new altima? 4dr (http://www.edmunds.com/new/2007/nissan/altima/sedan/midsize/index.html) or 2dr (http://www.edmunds.com/new/2008/nissan/altima/coupe/compact/index.html). The 2dr is based at liek 20,500 but if you go with Nissan I can get you the Nissan discount which will bring it below 20

And if youre gonna consider an mazda3 you might as well consider a fucus, g5, cobalt or ion or something bc theyre all american anyway.

And why not an impreza or lancer?

Don't get the tC, if you were still thinking about it. I like the cars but it's not really what you want, I don't think.

I've driven both the Mazda 3 and 6 and really like both of them. My brother bought a 6, and I'm impressed with the car so far. The 3 won't quite get the Civic's gas mileage but they are fun cars and probably cheaper to insure (just guessing.)

If it were me and I were planning to keep it for <100k miles, I'd get the Mazda all day. If I wanted to keep it for a long, long time I'd get the Civic just because of Honda reliability.

MissDSM
05-24-2007, 05:10 PM
Yeah, hes right, but not only the civic and mazda's but you should basically go and drive everything youd consider. Just spend 1 day driving everything and see what the best car (looks, feel, mileage, warranty) is for the money.

5.5 miles to work and your gonna buy a brand new dd? I mean no offence but are you out of your mind!? The car probably dosent even warm up properly by the time you get to work. And the 4cyl altima coupe get 26/35 mpg. Thats better than the tC which get 23/31 mpg, the Mazda3 that gets 26/33 and the lancer that gets 21/29. The civic is the only thing that gets better and thats 30/38 mpg. And for a 1 or 2 thousand dollar price difference i think you get aa lot more with the altima

Dear S4toSTI buy a car that makes you happy. Don't take opinions from people on here because everyone is bias. Even if they say they're not they are. Everyone likes certain cars and favors them more than others. My suggestion to you is go to like 10 dealerships and explain to the salesman what your looking for. Tell them what you expect like factory equipment and what you would like to have. Thats your best bet.

It's a nice car. The 4 cylinder is under 20K MSRP, so I'm sure you could work them down a bit.

Check out the Versa too. The hatch (5-door) can be had for around 15K with a 6-speed. My dad sat in the Versa sedan at the auto show and said he thought it was a bit cramped (He's over 6', as am I). It might be worth a look though, and the 30/34 MPG rating is attractive as well.

You can usually find some decent deals on Civics in every Sunday paper. A lot of them seem to be leases, but you should be able to find a few purchase deals. Just decide what you do and do not need. Some of the lower priced cars don't come with power windows and some things standard.

Also, even though the new Sentra looks like it has the radio molded in, you can still replace it.

Like I said to you before, just please don't settle on a car, whatever it may be. Wait til you find a car that you really like because we all know that if you get a car that your only "meh" about then you'll end up getting rid of it 6 months down the line.
