View Full Version : Bump starting

Ive read about this on wikipedia and other sites, but I am confused as to how its done. The idea is if you have a dead battery someone can give you a push as you are in 1st with the clutch to the floor, and then you release the clutch and it starts the car??? Has anyone done this? Does it work? Just wondering because it might come in useful one day and I dont want to be left in the parking lot if noone has jumpers

1. just get a set of jumpers
2. because you have forward momemtum, when you drop the clutch it will getthe engine moving and therefore the alternator, which will provide your engine with electricity, allowing your car to start and if you leave it running your battery will charge. this is assuming that your alternator is good. someone correct me if im wrong but Im pretty sure that this is how it works

The hard part is getting the car up to like 15mph if there is no incline around. But it works. I did it a few times with the camaro when i was having trouble with the starter.

You dump the clutch like you have never dumped it before. I usually did it in reverse cause i was rolling backwards out of a driveway.

LOL I had to do this in my CRX all the time because it just sat for long periods of time...yea I use second gear and just get a good roll going on and you will be able to start it...The battery is only really used for starting the car, spinning the starter and all so pretty much you are using the cars momentum to turn the engine over...I wouldn't make a habit of it but it does help when you are in a bind!!

LOL I can remember pushing my friend's 1988 something F-150 up a big hill to get his truck to start. Thank god it was a manual.

5mph is fine I think. I remember pushing 96Stang's old 5.0 mustang in a 7-11 parking lot. I pushed him towards the street and was like "if this doesnt work, make sure you stop before you get to the street" haha

it works much better if you are in 3rd gear.. i have used it all the time.. dead batt in philly... get some guys to puch me and wala .. im going again.. though if you have a jumper.. use it
the ratios are more favorable if you try it in reverse. a good hard shove will start 'er

is this bad for the car? compared to a jumpstart
markley02

I have never heard of anything directly breaking due to this, but it does put more stress on the car than "average" driving or jumpstarting
wears the clutch and motor mounts. otherwise no

i did it once, but not on purpose....i blew an IC pipe and i was almost back to my friends house, car stalled and i was already going down the hill, so i just dropped it in 2nd gear and let the clutch out, the car fired up and i got it home

The old Pop start! Try a Harley with a dead battery. Go up and down a hill like 3 times before you say F it and go buy a new battery!

ok so if you use the cars momentum to start the car then why does it have to be manual and not an auto?

I did it for the same reason in my brothers talon a few times, and used to do it with quads back back in the day... but i wouldnt just try it to see if its true, i mean all our posts proved that

because u cant drop it into gear like you can with manual

I guess you would need alotof momentum on a newer car, to get enough power from the alternator for spark, fuel pump, more spark, etc. Old cars are easy. Tiny pushed the Mini for me when the battery died at Jim's Steaks. 5mph did the job.

I probably pop started my RX-7 more times than I started it with turning the key. Pop starting it the only way to start a flooded rotary.
It's not bad for your car and it's been around forever.

I've done it in my RX-7 and CRX several times...by myself. Luckily both are light cars.

Make sure you push the clutch BACK in when you dump it or your stall out again.

Don't forget to turn the key to the "on" position, or else nothing is going to happen.

yea..i asked my grandpa about this yesterday. he said in ukraine, they had a rod that they inserted into the grill and hooked to the motor and you had to manually turn it to start the car as an alternative to bump starting.

i say dont do it if you dont have to. its pointless, if no other choice, do it

Noone is talking about him being old for speaking his native tounge. People said that because he remembers having a rod to start his car. Think of old, real sped up, black and white movies where some dude cranks his model T to life...lol
