Do you want an ECU or a Flashed ECU?

Well if your setup is tame (z32 maf, 550cc, t25/28, stock cams) I would do a ROM tune + safc for fine tuning. If anything other than the above, full standalone would be worth it (AEM, Apexi for budget standalone, Haltech, etc)

I wish I could get a ROM tune, but no ROM tuning is available for an S15 ECU in the states that I know of :mad:

If I was to go standalone it'd be Haltech. I've heard unless you have datalogit tuning the Apexi FC is like playing 8bit gameboy and sucks balls.

Get the Power FC. I picked mine up for $600 used. I just wish they made it for more applications. Waaaaaaay superior to AFC/Emanage piggyback crap.

Tuned ECU's are pretty good these days. If it's a daily driver we recomend staying away from the heavy duty tuning stuff.

i just bought a 240 with a sr in it the guy claimed it has a E5 ecu, i have very little exprience with this motor or turbos, so i was wondering does that make sense? or is it bull

E5 is a standart ECU for 94-96 blacktop s13 sr20det
62 = redtop s13 sr 5sd
63 = redtop s13 sr auto

i run a Power FC D-jetro (map)

Why would you say that? I am not questioning you but I am just wondering why you might say this. Are there reliability issues that arise from running something like a powerFC (which I too am looking into if I go with a JDM WRX motor) or is it simply too powerful for an application such as moderate tuning where a normal tune would suffice?

Absolutely not. There is no such thing as "too powerful". Although there may be "overkill" for certain applications when it comes to different standalones (Power FC vs. AEM vs. Motec vs blah blah.) When you are comparing a system that completely replaces the stock computer and allows complete and total control of fuel and ignition maps, to an off the shelf ROM tune that is not completely optimized for the particular application, the choice is simple. That is, if your willing to spend the extra money to do things right the first time, and you want your engine the be the MOST powerful and MOST reliable it can be. Think about it. What good is all the money you've spent on building your engine, turbo, fuel system, etc.. And then you skimp on the one thing that is going to dictate how well all of those parts work together. Now I will say there are some off the shelf tunes that still provide good power and reliability. I'm a big fan of Cobb's Access Port for Subarus for example. But, there still is plenty of room left on the table with a standalone in the hands of a good tuner.

Because a ROM Tune will usually be better all around (idle, part throttle, wierd loads) than a standalone thats just tuned quickly at WOT.

I have a JWT ECU and my car ran like a swiss watch till I started having problems with the band aid SAFC thats on it. I won't reccomend JWT though cus of their horrible turnaround time.

I originally bought my ECU to be used on the street, now my car isn't a street car I wish I had a power FC d-jet or a haltec

I don't think too many people who pay for tuning just get their WOT map tuned. That's half-assing it. Although I'm sure there are hack shops out there who just tune that way.

Just a question, how much would it be for you guys to get your hands on a PowerFC for a v3/4 EJ20K motor? Just trying to get an idea
