I want to know what a good starter camera would be. I need something that would allow me to adjust the settings manually. ISO, aperature, exposure, white balance. Maybe even be able to shoot RAW. For all you guys who say you dont need a digital SLR to take good photos, let me know what a good camera would be.

I just want something really decent, but wont break the bank.

I would say a used d50 or d70. I don't say the d40 because for me it is too small in my hands but it may not be for you.

Finepix S5200 by Fujifilm...i use it and it has all of the features you want...even manual focus, etc.

Would I want something that can take longer exposures incase I want to do a night shot? I know I am a noob, but 2 doesn't seem long enough when I hear people talking about 30 second exposures.

What kind of card they take, what kind of lenses they take(d40 only takes dx lenses), size of camera, a really good site is ken rockwell

I do like the sound of the Finepix S5200, but because of the exposure I am leaning towards the d40. Will I ever use the potential of the D40?

It depends on how much you get into it.

agreed. I'd also look into the canon g series. they are a decent point and shoot, and have many manual seeting modes. I had a G5 before i got my xt. Loved it, love my xt as well.

Use dpreview.com they are relatively un biased and have great comparisons.

Bump for an answer if people really use above a +2 exposure that often

Not many will over/underexpose by 2 stops and if they do, it's very often. Most of the time when I'm underexposing that much it's for interior shots or low light shots where I only want a small area to be well exposed. These might be less than 1% of the total shots I make, so I doubt this should be a concern for you.

Go to a camera store and try out the camera.s Most likely you will prefer the Nikon in your hand. Nikon entry level dSLRs are better ergonomically than the Canon entry level (too small). Image quality is a toss up but given all things being equal, I'd give a small edge to Canon, especially at higher ISO. Image quality, though, depends on the subject being shot. Nikon tends to be stronger in some areas but weaker in others. Regardless, I think you'd be happy with either brand at the moment but plan ahead if you want to invest more and become a better photographer as you get better.
