an Escort GT2 timer. im actually having alot of fun with it, it has lots of info and numbers allways changing on the screen while u drive. Ill have to take it to the track to really have some fun with it. Anyone else have one of these? its a cool toy which ill probably end up selling in a couple of weeks but in the meantime its fun.

only side effect is that it makes u drive like a maniac trying to hit the peak levels on the graphs & charts.

no numbers yet, i need to program in a little more info for it to be accurate. i also need to run a full bore 1/4 mile, which i havent had the chance to do yet.

hold the train here...how the hell does it calculate horsepower?

if you pause the video, you can see it tells your horsepower...huh? :roll:

Simple physics
Horsepower is a calculation of power over time ( ft. x lb. / sec. ) all you need is the weight of the car and the device should be able to calculate the acceleration in the given time to calculate horsepower. It is a figure not including any friction forces so it would be a possible at the crank hp. Nothing like the numbers you would see on the Dyno.

On the dyno, you accelerate the rollers which are of a known weight and the program calculates the torque then calculates hp. Its the same thing, just with the incar reader, you are accelerating the car and its more realistic. All frictional forces are present in that case.

So you actually believe its accurate?

[sorry, i know what horsepower is and how its measured]

seems it would be measuring power at the flywheel and not rwhp, so you'd be getting higher than avg numbers, unless your manually program the weight of the car and a few other things

Anyone serious about boost should have read the two books "Maximum Boost" by Corky Bell, and "turbochargers" by Hugh McInnes.

One of those (forgot which) shows how to calculate horsepower manually (at one RPM point at a time) with only acceleration and deceleration at a given RPM, and a few other calculations. You don't need a dyno to do it, though it's tons easier and quicker :-P

If the meter is in the car and not on the motor why wouldn't it include frictional forces. I've got the G-tech version and IIRC, it was pretty close to my dynojet numbers. Even the 1/4 mile times were within .2 or .3sec. A lot of people were reporting similar things and were quite happy with it.

hrmm,.. while i havent tried one myself,.. someone over at srtforums who just got his car back from psi fi with about anything you can imagine money can buy, ran a 1/4 mile g-tech run and got 14.2 @ 121mph

maybe he doesnt have it set up right? i really dont know anything about them

Those are some very interesting numbers but not totally out of the ballpark. It's possible that he just didn't have traction. I've seen numbers like that before.

First time to the track a built A4 was spinning tires half way down the 1/4. Car was making some serious power but something in the tranny let go and took out the quattro system right at the start.

Imagine 1st through 3rd gear and the car is just spinning tires. Although that display of power awes some people in reality he could be racing a stock car and they would probably still be side by side. By 4th thing should be hauling.

Does this person have any actual track times?
