View Full Version : anyone know anything about a 350 swap into a 240sx?

I'm really thinking about doing this. Doing away with all the computer stuff, drop in a 350...5 speed of course. Anyone know anything at all about this? How hard it is? What kind of tranny I would wanna use with it? (gotta be 5 speed) What needs to be done to do it? Any input would be greatly appreciated. I can probably get a 350 pretty cheap, its just all the custom shiz that would be the $$.
i havent heard of any 350s, though im sure its been done. i do remember reading about one s13 that sees duty as a landspeed car with a flathead ford in it so just about anything is possible. see if you can find one in the junkyard so you can get some measurements. especially note the locations of the stock motor mounts and the front suspension crossmember. as long as you can find an oil pan/oil pickup arrangement that fits and the transmission will fit the tunnel i cant see any reason not to try

I understand the desire for cheap power, but this will ruin the handling of the car.

I can't imagine this would be cheaper then a sr engine?

idk I just thought it would be something pretty cool and different. I dont know that it would be any cheaper to do it, but it seems like it may be easier, since I wouldn't have to worry about all the electronics and tuning and such.

Wait aren't we talking about a 350z motor?

If you need to ask all these questions, it's probably not going to be worth the work to you. Just swap an SR in if you want more power or do a budget Ka-t setup. Much easier and you should be able to get enough power out of either without spending too much money, especially with all the sweatshop brand stuff on the market now. You could get a manifold, intercooler and piping and a downpipe for a couple hundred off ebay or some random vendors. And then a stock SR turbo, stock SR injectors and something to kind of tune with like a crappy safc or something for another couple hundred. And then you would just need lines for the turbo and you're pretty much done. It could easily be done for under $1000 if you've got a decent KA in there still.

i've thought about that to trust me, but I would need to either do a full rebuild or a swap because I have a SOHC with 192k on the clock.

So swap in a dohc KA. It's simple.

swap a ca18det then..... its cheaper than the sr20... if u want to swap a v8 get a 240z then and swap the vk56 lol....i think for a 240sx ur best option is the ca18det or sr20det... theres a custom kit for a 2jz swap for about 1500 .... and theres also a custom kit for a rb25det swap...

That black vert has so many problems tho, it barely ever runs, and when it does it has all kinds of problems
hes not talking about the VQ35DE, hes talking about a 350c.i., and a lot of the newer Chevy V8's weigh about the same as a KA24DE, so it doesnt really mess up the handling, just makes a badass car all around.
That said, its a bad idea, the frame needs all kinds of stiffening and customization to fit the engine, then keep it from twisting into pieces with all the torque it woud have

Don't waste your time with the CA.

1) its not that expensive
2) there are aluminum heads for the ls1 (block is already aluminum)
3) you gotta search better for your info....
engine seems to fit just fine

LS1 s14 video...including engine weights (http://www.hinsonsupercars.com/LS1Nissan1stDrive.wmv)
you can buy just about everything needed for an ls swap into an s-chassis from Hinson Supercars (http://www.hinsonsupercars.com/partsMain.htm#)
its amusing how quick some people are to spew incorrect information simply b/c they think an idea is stupid or they can't afford to do it themselves
the ka weighs in excess of 525 lbs and the typical ls1 weighs less than 500 lbs
you can pick up a rebuilt ls1, throw on some long tube headers, throw in some cams and call it a day

Sorry, whenever some one says 350, I think LT1 not LS1. :o I think he meant old school 350 since he wanted to do away with electronics. By the way, doing away with electronics is silly. Electronics are what make modern cars run so well (and break so bad, but that's not the point.) Just a get a megasquirt and play with that.
Personally I think a nissan needs a nissan engine, CA18, SR20, or some flavor of RB. Just my opinion.

well, depending on how much I could pick up a used ls1 w/ tranny and pcm for, I could have a car that is lighter then a stock 240, and is faster then a vette for like an 1/8th of the cost.

i agree with what some of the other guys have said so far......don't even bother if its not an ls1 or better i.e. ls7 :inlove:

Jeez, even a TPI 80's vette motor with a carb/intake and cam would have more horsepower than a El-cheapo KA rebuild with a bargain turbo swap.
A V8 cooling package is prolly an aluminum radiator with an air to oil cooler.
No biggie on the radiator, just go to you local auto parts store, and look at the different aluminum radiators that they have on the stores, you can prolly find one that will fit in the 240's bay. Just about all radiators from the mid 90's use a two core aluminum fin radiator, plenty of cooling if you use an electric fan and a 170* stat.
Making the fram stiffer is easier, just double up on the spot welds on the car and make some better subframe connectors.
You wouldn't need much HP for a fun car, b/c of all the torque, i'd say 350 would be plenty, and a 350/350 combo is easy. Look in hot rod for some of their bargain builds, you'd be surprised at how much power you can have for cheap.
More importantly, if this is a backyard build, i don't think you would want max power at first, figure out all the kinks before you go all out.

Build an old school small block. Punch out a 400, throw some good flowing aluminum heads on it, back it up with a stout 5 speed, drop it in and have fun. No electronics,no bs.
