34 thousand miles, clutch is going. Dont know much about it but can I just change out the disk without having to do the entire clutch?

If your car was stock and you drove like an old lady I'd probably say sure, why not. Save a couple hundred bucks. But the time, effort, money it's going to take to replace it is a lot more than the price of a pressure plate (pp). Cause if you drive it hard and plan on adding more hp to it then that pp is going to give you problems.

If it's an aftermarket piece, at the very least I'd recommend sending it back to the company to have them spec it and see if it's warped.

Replace the whole thing man, time to upgrade.

Im still under warrenty though. So i was thinking if they deny the claim for some off Subaru reason, I can save money and just change out the disk. Its bad enough a new clutch is over 300$$ but the installation is going to be more then the part itself.

Well if your car is stock, you shouldn't have any warranty issues.

JoeScooby
06-22-2005, 10:07 AM
yah but wouldnt that be normal wear and tear? I thought ish like that isnt usually coverd under the warrenty. I really do want to get a exedy but of course $$. Plus I really dont know of anywhere that does transmissions/drivetrain work around me cept rallispec. They are booked until the end of September

(2nd post)

IIRC, Subaru was one of the only companies that actually warranties clutch and brake stuff. Normal wear and tear items that other manufacturers don't warranty. It should be in your owners booklets.

I heard it first on NPR and it got me interested so I looked it up. I had a 2002 WRX at the time and I'm pretty sure it right in the book. I was like, cool.

Of course they can deny your claim if you they have any suspecion the car was abused, raced, or misused. And every dealership is not the same. One can tell you one thing while another says something else. Best bet is to check your book and bring it with you.

My books says during the 36,000 mile limited warrenty everything in the car is covered, except if it was heavily abused by the user. After that only a grip of engine things are covered and i think 2 or 3 tranny items. Hopefully this is the way it works at Miller Subaru.

Make sure to pull off any and all aftermarket stickers, pump or deflate tires to manufacturer's suggested inflation numbers, check tranny fluids and make sure there is not a single thing/reason for them to suspect you actually know anything about how boost works on your car.

I use to be a mechanic and when there was a chance to get out of warranty work most guys would check everything down to tire pressures. Mechanics hate warranty work cause they don't get paid as much. Dealerships hate it cause if they do anything wrong at all with the paperwork then they don't get paid.

well seeing how i was going to do a full flush and fill this weekend, its not the greatest time. Tranny fluid is clean, guess ill change my oil again.. do it every 4'000 miles. Im leaving my exhaust on there. I know about subaru and their warrenties. They hide behind the fact that they suspect your always abusing the car (User abuse, user Abuse). You buy a WRX and your younger then 60.. your abusing your car.. GTFO.. all i got is springs and a exhaust (as of right now)

2point4DSM
06-22-2005, 11:58 AM
Don't worry about changing your tranny fluid. They have to drain it to swap your clutch. Just top it off and keep the oil so you can change the crap that they put back in your tranny.

And if you plan on leaving your exhaust and springs on there then you might as well order that nice clutch you've always wanted. 99% chance this is going to be out of your pocket. Might as well find someone else to do the work too. Might save you some money and or at the very least you will get a better performance oriented mechanic.

you got to be kidding me? a exhaust and some springs? No way man. I will be highly pissed off is they decide to deny warrenty work for that. Your exhaust caused your clutch to wear out" GTFO OUT MONKEY...

I will throw down.

2point4DSM

The exhaust for sure. Consider that any clutch setup is rated for a certain amount of power. Increase that power and now the clutch has to work harder and wears faster.

The springs do not have a direct correlation to power but they can infer that since you have "performance springs" that you drive your car hard.

I use to be a mechanic so I'm trying to give you insight. That's as much as I can do, though.

You've prolly heard the joke about Subaru voiding warrenty for changing the stock Potenzas.
SoA is really rough about warrenty work.

I know, I know. well its either going to be free or cost me over 700 bucks...

50-50 shot

Consider that they are the only company (that I know) that will even warranty wear items.

Also, they figure that WRX, STI and turbo models usually end up in the hands of people that actually beat them. Their warranty specifically denies work due to abuse/misuse or performance/racing type of use. So naturally they will be hardest on their performance models.

If Jane Doe were to go in there and ask for a new clutch on her n/a forester I bet their tone would be a lot different.

I did warranty work on a 9-12 month old Accord. Seems the brakes were completely worn at ~10k miles. My boss comes over and checks the rubber on the brake pedal and assumes the person was driving with both her feet on the brake and gas pedal.

Denied!!

I think 50/50 is too easy. I'm still leaning towards 99/1.

Refer to my second post and read your owner's manuals on warranty and see if you can get a refund. I highly doubt it though. No guarantee you will get your point across even if you get a lawyer.

JoeScooby, any chance you can point out the correct pages.

JoeScooby
06-22-2005, 01:02 PM
The correct pages as in warrenty book? It should be in the 1st few under the limited warrenty area.

hopefully they will replace it for you. i also needed something stronger than the pos stock clutch.

Once again, DEPENDING on the dealership, IF they ok your warranty work they might even throw on your aftermarket clutch.

This would have to be done by a "friendly" tech/mechanic from behind the scenes sort of thing.

Reasons why they won't just throw aftermarket stuff on there is cause they have no idea if the part is actually better/worse and they don't want to be liable to re-do warranty work if it doesn't work out.

So best bet is to find a tech that actually drives a modded car.

In a garage of 12 there were 3 of use that would have done it. So you got a 25% chance of finding that right tech. Of those 3 all were under 30. The older guys were wise enough to not deal with it.

so far the last 2 times i had really cool techs. One of the dewd's complimented my drop and my rims. The other dewd knew my car was lowered and changed out sway bushings cuz they were horribly creaking (wear n tear )

and if they dont do it for you under warrenty there a few places i know that will install clutch, flywheel for under 300. if you want to just buy a stock clutch you can get your flywheel resufaced too.

Is it done and installed? How much of a difference did you notice with the lightened flywheel?

JoeScooby

Umm LOL I noticed I can not drive anymore.. Stalled out a few times in 1st and reverse. Umm Shifting is much smoother ill tell you that, revs a lil faster.. bout it.. I havnt driven it that much since yesterday to get the full advantage.
