On a budget:
Canon 17-40 f/4.0L
Tamron 17-50 f/2.8

Not on a budget:
Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS
Canon 24-105 f/4.0L IS
Canon 24-70 f/2.8L

I'd suggest two or three lenses for each type of photography. You'll probably want a wide angle zoom for car shows and either a telephoto zoom or prime for the portraits. The 135 f/2.0L is a great portrait lens, as is the 85 f/1.2L. If you're on a budget, the Canon 85 f/1.8 is also a viable substitute.

My set up is the Canon 16-35 f/2.8L when I need the wide angle shots and the Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS when I need more focal range. The 70-200 is good for the drag strip and photo shoots where I have space to maneuver. I've also used it for portraits since it falls in the focal range of portrait photography. It's not as sharp as the primes but it does fine when I stop it down to f/3.2 or f/3.5. Here's a sample shot to give you an idea of the bokeh:

1/200
f/3.5
ISO 200

I don't do much portrait photography so my post processing isn't as good as my automotive PP.
