Well, SOA dealer claled me today and gave me the bad news. Yep, tranny is busted!
I'm considering several options:
Trade it in and take a loss (don't know what a car with a broken trans is worth)
Replace with a stock tranny
Go with RA gears
Go with PPG 1-2 gear
Sell a kidney and try to get a 6 speed installed
Another option?
Not really sure what to do here...... don't have much dough to drop here.....

stock tranny is by far the cheapest route. sell your broken one as is and pick up a complete, good condition, stock tranny.
buying a complete, used STi tranny would be a big step up in price, and strength.
PPGs will be even more after you pay for assembly and everything needed, but everyone seems to love them.
do you know what gear is broken? and do you know if everything else is in good shape? dont know how much subaru charged to tear the tranny down but i would recommend not paying them to work on it any further... it will get very expensive and you really dont need to pay them to do it... you've got guys here who can help :)
i definitely would not sell it with a broken tranny, that'd be a big loss.

I would def. say after driving a five speed and a six speed. It is very good investment to go for the 6 spd not only for strength but reliability too.

Honestly, it all depends on how far you are willing to take your car. If you plan on keeping it and modifying it then I would say PPG's. Don't bother with the 1-2, if 3rd ever goes out (which is also common) the it will take out 2nd as well. Nothing like spending 2k on a trans and having a stock gear blow it apart. Spend the 4k on the 1-4.... you will not be disapointed at all!

$3500 on 1-4 gears alone, $5200 complete and assembled I believe, which includes a used case, 5th gear, synchros, bearings, etc.
You can do a 6MT for about $3500 total for the tranny and all parts required for install if you play your cards right, could be slightly more.
Both are great options, the PPGs are superior for drag racing due to light weight and one less shift.
And then of course like I said above, a stock WRX transmission is a fraction of the cost if you are tighter on cash or don't have higher aspirations for the car... you could buy 3 or more stock transmissions for less than either of the other options, if you want to think about it that way.

Thanks for the input guys.....I'm waiting to hear what SOA says today. I'm giving some serious thought to the 6 speed. I plan on having this car for a while so that might make the most sense.

Sucks man.. I know if i was in you situation, I would go Ver VII 6speed (non DCCD)
I'm surprised my tranny has lasted this long(I went over 100,00miles) a couple days ago.

Chris, no plans on building the tranny I sold you?
6mt is nice, especially for cruising and what not. I may have a full swap for sale soon.

I still got the tranny and the replacement 03 gear set I picked up for it. I might be using those as bargaining chips for later though........

I'm going threw this myself. I am trying to decide between the 05 legacy gears which are close, if not the same gears as the sti ra gears, but cost less then half the price of the ra or get get ppg 1 and 2nd with sti or lgcy 3,4 and stock 5th. which would be 2700 installed in the tranny. Or just trade my car in for an sti.

According to them, the teeth shredded off 3rd gear. I'll have pics of the gears in a few days.....

I exploded my stock trans a few years ago, and replaced it with another stocker. Works good.
