and not have an intercoolor or even turbocharger?
What about if you have a FMIC?

No. If it fits the body lines of the car then i think its ok. If its an ebay brand scoop thats installed with double sided tape and not functional then its rice.

Nah, I like my hood scoop. I've thought about doing a reverse scoop hood and what not, but I just think it won't look right.

you ricers...jk some v6 mustangs come w/scoops and there not fast cars, so if it looks good then i say it ok for a car to have a scoop unless you have a civic with a 10 inch cowl hood
plenty of cars came with functional scoops that werent turbocharged

all depends on the car...for example, my car w/ a scoop = rice

depends on the car 100%
scoops do different things for different cars

i like things plain and simple so in my opinion:
function = cool, go for it.
non-functional = people always try to race to see if its really turbo'd or its actually rice

I don't the car has to have a FI setup to have one at all. I think it just works well with some cars and not so well with others.

There is no straight definition of rice...its more an attitude than anything else. However, as long as all of the work is done in a clean way, and doenst look cheap, you wont get bad attention.

But, what if it's a 2.5 RS Subaru with no turbo? I'm trying to feel better about my hoodscoop. Lol

I love the little hood scoop on the older RS and I think it would not look as good without it

What if the model of car that has the hood scoop in japan utilized it for a top mount IC but the model here in the US doesn't unless you swap in another engine/turbo it?
I think an RS scoop isn't rice since it was designed for function, america just got raped when it comes to any kind of GC/GM chassis stock turbo model

IMHO, any car that didn't have a hood scoop stock or as in option is rice..

As long as it's not a scoop that is just stuck on it's not rice.

idk about him, but when I hear non functional, i think of it as liek...a scoop.... stuck a hood, without air passage able to flow through.

eacatly what i think. if a "scoop" doenst allow air flow to any part of the motor, cools anything nor help with intake flow, then it could possibly be called rice.

Absolutely. But if it cools/extracts heat, and forces air into a good situation (intake, IC, etc), then it helps. Even if it is just a little bit...
However, from personal experience..I have a heat extractor in the rear b/c this engine gets HOT and overheating has been a frequent problem, and my scoops work and duct right onto my CAI. Which also means I prolly shouldn't take it into carwashes and such.

The hood vents/scoop on my car actually help a lot. The scoop itself I don't notice TOO much difference but when idling you can actually see/feel heat rising out of the vents if your car is fully warmed up. The sad part is when it snows it goes right on top of the ABS sensor and ****s with it

Well, so far so good with rain, but an auto car wash with high pressure..oi..I did one of those self serve car washes, and I actually had a bit of sluggish performance for a mile or so. Prolly dampened the intake i'd imagine.

no rice on the roof scoop as long as it matches the body lines. When i removed the sunroof from my rx7 I put one on. It matches that car really whell as hopefully will be done paint and out for some runs this spring.

iv only seen one roof scoop that was functional.. it was on an MR2 it was acually decent looking not overly sized and it was carbon fiber.. it sat on top of the roof and trailed back to the motor..

If it doesnt matter what others think he wouldnt have made a thread asking what others think.
Stuff like this, when you buy a scoop and just stick it on your hood and dont cut a hole for air passage is just rice, period.
example..

i think what we are learning is
it depends on the style of the scoop
it depends on the car the scoop is on

^^^ + depends on if it actually functions for air flow

I see what you guys are saying;
but, I was also wondering about the fact that the hood scoop changes aerodynamics of the car at high speed (+90 mph). I know it's only a little bit. But, I'm just throwing that idea out there.

Well, I can kinda chime in. Mine is like fiberglass/steel, and the reason why is b/c i've heard (and seen bits of evidence) of the all fiberglass RKSport hood warping and going a bit bonkers at high speeds. My car can easily get past 170mph without a limiter, but I don't ever really plan on getting near that. It's just a matter of how paranoid you are.
