1991 Chevy Corsica. LOL! sorry. Anyways, if you want my honest opinion, I'd say buy something cheap, a beater. I just feel its better to start with a POS car because 1) You wont have to worry as much about crashing it (meaning, something thats FWD and doesn't have a lot of power) and 2) You'll be that much more appreciative of a nice car when you do get one.

something with >100hp think like 88 corolla sedan with the carbed 4af. it'll run forever and wont kill you. pimp that for a year or two until some of the idiot kid tendancys leave your driving and you have a semi decent job, then you'll be ready to go to a car with some ponies

I would agree that getting something old and cheap is a good idea. Maybe an old Honda? You could get some cheap e-bay mods for it and still not crack 100WHP! :)

The real question here is how much money do you have? I agree about a cheap car.
Get a car that runs well. Even if the looks arn't amazing. Then you can paint the interior, put subs in the trunk, put vinyl everywhere, LED lights, spinner hubcaps, and anything else that every 16 year old likes.
Then when you have some money and have been driving for a couple years, consider spending some more money. That way you are a better driver, and you will have gotten over ricing out your car!
I would look into Nissan's, Honda's, Mazda's, maybe even a ford Taurus/Escort/Focus!

I'd look into an old corolla sporting a 4A engine and if you wanna have some fun swap 4AG head on it. Or something like a 88 Civic, the old boxy kind. Drove one of those, stick shift, no power steering, 70 some hp, and honestly it was one of the most fun cars I've ever driven.

That's what I have. First car. AWD is very safe.
If I were to have a 16 year old kid...
I would get him a late 80's early 90's Civic hatch!
Do mad suspension work to it, roll cage, 5 pint harnesses, and leave the 80 some hp engine alone. That way when he starts driving like a 16 year old does, he won't hurt himself. Even if he flips it, worse case scenario he will walk away with some scratches.

Some old import should work. Little CRX or hatch with a crazy suspension setup would be awesome.

VW reliability is spotty at best.
4a corollas, F specifically are BOMB PROOF theres just no stopping the things. and if you have a cheap beater you can do dumb stuff like rally it in the woods...trust me >100hp is plenty enough to get sideways in mud

B13 Nissans are solid, cheap cars (91-94 sentra, 91-93 nx). I started out with a nissan nx2k and I never should've sold it. Only problem with the se-r, & nx2k is finding one that isn't sold by the time you call to look at it.
I can also recomend a toyota tercel. My sister is using that as her first car and that 1.5L/auto is very suprising while still getting 35mpg. The interior is huge too. You can fit 4 full sized people in it comfortably. And as long as you do basic maintenance it'll run forever.

AWD is perfect. Safe, reliable, streetable, trackable. You can have the most power possible, but when some prick pulls up in something AWD, he's already beat you for 330 feet. There's my advice.

I would say something that is reliable and stock. Drive it for a few years and save some money for something else or wait until your done with school.

you have to be initiated into the world of your first accident and high insurance rates before you are worthy of anything better than an early 90's honda...then save up some cash, sell the hoopty, and get a 1g AWD DSM. with under 3k in mods, you are hitting low 13's high 12's....but only AFTER, you wreck something, b/c i would hate to see another perfectly good dsm go to waste b/c of some dumb kid that can't handle 300whp

I have to agree on the B13 Nissans, but I'd go with a 1.6L. The SR20 equiped ones have balls. Extremly fun car, I cant remember how many times I nearly killed myself with mine. That car pulled the worst out of me, the thrill of hitting 6-7k rpms was just to much fun.
not much use in telling him the cars of our generation that were cheap to buy/mod. Im guessing that by the time hes ready the early bugeye wrxs will be down in the easily aquired 2k range

a focus zx4 st in manual, cool car, that you can mod later on to make decent power. Focusst113 on here has one with cams and its pretty quick. Or a acura rsx (non type S) 5 speed manual, both fun cars
