you CAN do it yourself, but you'd be better off, IMO, to send it out to be done because they can balance it also.

Here is the problem. If you re-assemble your turbo and a tiny fraction of a weight, .5 of a gram, is off center and not counterbalanced on the compressor wheel your turbo will die a lot quicker than if it was re-assembled properly. You gotta realize how fast turbos spin and how much centrifugal force they have. Unless you have a machine that can balance a compressor wheel for you, I wouldn't reccomend that. I wouldn't recommend doing it personally. Can it be done? Sure but with proper machines you can balance it perfectly.

I really do understand the forces involved here, and I still want to rebuild a turbo. Plus I'm sure there are shops I can take the parts to have them balanced.

Ebay sells rebuild kits. If you feel comfortable in doing it then give it a try. I have done numberous rebuilds before and they have turned out fine. I definately wouldnt rebuild a turbo with bad wheels or a bad shaft. If your turbo blew a oil seal and you drove on it for awhile, I wouldnt even bother for the fact that the shaft is probably burned up and the rear oil seal is welded onto teh shaft.
