Ok guys, here’s my 1989 Supra project. I plan to restore this MKIII to NEW condition.

Background about the car:
I was driving around Bethlehem one day and drove by this very clean supra, which caught my attention immediately. I wasn’t looking for one, as if I needed another one, but I pulled over to check it out anyways. They car looked even cleaner from closer. There were a few scratches and chips on the paint, as well as some dings. The rest of the car was perfect. Interior was MINT condition. Not one imperfection. Called the number on the FOR SALE sign and left a message. When they called back, we agreed to meet that weekend for a test drive. They car has 74K miles on it and still smells like NEW inside. 5spd, non turbo (which didn’t worry me, I have everything I need if I wanted to make it a stock turbo), TEMS suspension, hardtop (A biggie with me), it had all the goodies. I really liked the car standing still, so the next step was to take for a spin. The drive was impressive, the rear struts were bad. The tranny shifted like no supra I’ve ever driven before, very smooth. I found myself in love again. I loved the car and although wasn’t looking for one, I decided to convince my wife anyways. That didn’t take long, so I was off to talk to the owner about $$$$$. She (Yes, a lady, which is not that common for supras) was a very nice person. It so happens she is very much into Supras. She had a MKII which was stolen and from what they told me, it was in MINT condition too. Anyways, we negotiated for a day or so. The next day, I cut $1,400 off the bill and the deal was done. Drove the car home, washed it and parked it in my headed garage (Baby has got to sleep warm) and didn’t do anything with it but sit in it for a couple of days. I was trying to vision what I wanted to do with this car. I certainly didn’t need it, and wasn’t sure why I bought it, but I couldn’t let this deal slide.

Changes:
While I was planning on what to do with the car, I decide to do a small project I wanted to do for a while, a Push Start/Stop engine button setup. This setup took me a while to setup, about a week. I wanted to use not just any button, but the Lexus push button. Due to the complexity of the button, I had to take it apart and figure out what each of the 11 pins did and how I can use them. After long hours of work and many wiring diagrams later, the system was complete. It didn’t work exactly the way I wanted it, but it worked none the less. I still have to rework the diagram to make a few changes. At the state the circuit is in, I don’t need any keys. Once I complete the system, it should work as follows: I will have a pager which controls the alarm system. With this pager I can operate the windows, doors, engine, etc. I will not need any keys. Once the system is disarmed, I will be able to use the push button to start/stop the engine. Here are a few pictures.

P.S – Yeah, that’s the original shift knob. It will be replaced eventually, but I will save this one anyways.

Project:

I will not give out the entire project at once, but I will note some details of the overall outcome of the project. The design idea took me months and months of going back and forth on an option and changing them, but now I now exactly what I want for this particular car.

Overall for this car I would like to see done, first, a paint color change. The car is currently midnight blue, but not for too long. I’m having it painted Jet black. The idea is to make this car as luxurious and sporty as possible without crossing each other over the limit. The car will be painted black ALL over (Engine bay, inside the doors, hatch, everything) New coating underbody, bushings, ALL SS bolts, powder coated sub frames and suspension parts color matched, etc. here are a few details:

Exterior:
Jet Black paint w/ matching molding and a chrome edge. Underbody is also getting stripped and coated.
Kinesis, HRE, or Work wheels
Front lip

Engine:
7M Twin Turbo (aiming only for about 500hp, but unbelievable response, sort of like a motorcycle)
Custom Intake ( Ron R. of course)
Customs exhaust manifolds (Maybe Ron R. not sure)
Custom exhaust and all the goodies.

Interior:
Custom black interior with suede inserts
Recaro bucket seats
Navigation system
Customized dash cluster using high output LED.

More to come. I will post pics later. Possibly tomorrow.

Ok guys, sorry about that. I edited the post and put the pics up. I'll post some more pictures of the car being taken apart and all that shortly. I have really high res picture that I have to bring down to a smaller size. For now, here's a photochopped version of what I want the car to look like sort of. As you can see below, I also have a midnight blue as that was one of my color choices while I was trying to decide which way to go. I also photochopped many more pics which I'll try to post along. Some I didn't put too much effort into editing so, you're welcome to laugh.

Thanks for all the comments.

Here's the car all black with Work Equips

Here's the call in midnight blue
http://supraholic.brinkster.net/supra/89supra/badassmkiiiblue.jpg

Here's the car black with a chrome molding - Sorry, I'm not good turning black into chrome, so it looks a little out of place, but you get the idea. The actual size if the chrome strip is smaller.

Here's another photochop guys, indigo ink blue, chrome molding trim, and HREs 545.

As promised, here are some pics while tearing the car apart...I apologize in advance as I suck at taking pictures. Most of the time I forget to take pictures that actually matter and end up taking some pictures that...well, suck.

Here's a picture of the car ALMOST in one piece.

These are the original Saw Blades wheels. Not using them, but I'll keep them anyways. There is no curb damage or anything, so they're worth keeping.

^^^ Thanks. Is kinda the point. I want something very rare and At the same time maintain the car's original trim. I would be way cheaper to just drop a 2JZ and go single. I have time though. 2008 is just something for me to aim at, but I'm in no hurry at all. I got quite a few parts already, but since I'm going TT now, probably won't use all of them. I'll post pics later as I have them at home.

Making progress!!!! The main thing is to get the car completely disassembled and mount the mock-up engine to test the turbo setup and pipes, then get the car painted. I'll have the Front and Rear sub frames powder coated once the car is painted. Here's a little teaser pic. This is somewhat the color combo I want. Silver and purple. I tried the blue also to see how it looks.

This is NO where near a Supra supension by far - this is just a clean image I got from the net so that I can photoshop the colors I wanted
http://supraholic.brinkster.net/supra/89supra/sus_proto.jpg

Here are some of the parts for the project. There's more under the table. Some I will not be using for this project any longer, but there's always a next project.

http://supraholic.brinkster.net/supra/89supra/IMG_2101_SMALL.jpg

Here's my OEM bumper from TOYOTA - You're better off buying a body kit price wise, but I wanted the OEM look, so here it is.

OEM Hood latch. The one the car has is perfectly fine, but I just wanted a new one so the car looks as new as possible all around.

Here are some pictures of the underbody coating. The sub frames are not done. This is the first layer of coating. Once I get the car painted, another layer of underbody coating will go on as well as getting the sub frames powder coated. Again, sorry for not taking pics when the sub frames were off and the chassis was completely bare. I keep forgetting to take pics of these types of things.

http://supraholic.brinkster.net/supra/89supra/IMG_2505_SMALL.jpg

Here are the pictures as of today. This is how the car stands right now. There is nothing on the chassis right now but the suspension, doors, fenders and windshields. Those will be removed at the paint shop.

I appreciate the offer, really do. Thanks. I would have to see how handy you are. I'm done taking the car apart. I'm just waiting on my spoiler to send it to the paint shop. Once the car is painted, I have to be EXTRA EXTRA EXTRA carefull putting everything back on because I'm a neat freak and if I see a scratch the size of a hair, it has to be painted again, and if you were the one who scrathed it...you're dead. LOL..no seriously...LOL, no I'm serious!!!!

Thanks for the comments, I appreciate it. It is going with the chrome stripe though. That is mainly the theme of this car. I do like it without and I'm not concerned. It is by FAR a permanent mod. Very easy to removed if I ever wanted to. So for now is going in.

Update:

Got my bomex front lips to go with my brand new OEM bumper. Actually got both Bomex lips Spec B-2 hole and the Spec B-3 hole because I love them both and in case I want to change them, then I can just spend 15 min and done. So I got both. I'll post pics tomorrow. I have them in my camera at home. Right now, I'm just waiting on my spoiler. As soon as I get that, the car is going in for paint - I'm so excited and I just can't hide it...And I know I know I know I know I know....J/K.

Almost there...I gotta cleanup some. I don't think I've ever seen my work bench this messy.

http://envisionbeautysalon.com/images/89supra/IMG_2529_SMALL.jpg

Sourced some guy in TN with the Kinesis K58 I want, but they aren't the K58R, so I'm not sure if I'll go thru with the purchase. New they are $1268.ea for polished, $1044.ea for silver. Another negative about this guy's wheels is they are 18 X 9.5 front (OK with this) but the rears are 18 x 11 (10 is the most I can go without rolling my fenders or installing flares, which I do not want to install flares on this car) I think I might go with the Kinesis polished wheels, but I would like the K58R. We'll see. That's it for now, I'll keep you posted. Once the car comes back, I'll get the suspension sub-frame powder coated, brand new suspension parts, and whatever else comes along with it.

Thanks again for the comments. Keep 'em coming!!!!

^^^
one suggestion - with a project like this, my advice is to continue searching if you don't find the exact part you're looking for right away. You will kill yourself if you settle for something out of impatience. Stick with the K58R since that was the original plan and maintain your goal of 18x10 in the rear with no flares. Better to wait a bit longer and get the desired effect in the end than cut corners and wind up regretting your decisions. good luck

Thanks for all the comments guys Here's an Update - I got the rear spoiler a few days ago. Also got the lip from Shine Auto Project (thanks guys). Also got done a few finishing touches done on the car.

Took the car in for paint yesterday. Spent like an hour talking to the guy about what I wanted done and how. There are a few things I'm having shaved. Also there's tons of holes that will be covered in the engine bay. I'm very excited to see the results. This guy is really good and I told him how I wanted the paint to look. I think the bill reflects the job. They are taking off the rest of the parts I didn't take off, including the subframes. I'll be getting some parts powder coated in the mean time.

I'll post some picstures later on today or tomorrow as I have to make them smaller in photoshop.

Also, got some hats done. They have the toyota logo with lettering at the bottom that say Supraholics.com, which will be my website. I've had the domain for over two years now and I'm still not done with the website. lol. I'll post some pics later.

I decided to get a new OEM nose because the one on the car wasn't lining up perfectly. So, $373 +tax after and that's on the way. My friend calls me crazy because I spent more on OEM parts for the front then a whole body kit is worth. Oh well, I want this car to be stock looking but ultra clean.

For those of you who are not familiar with the car, below is a picture of the part I'm talking about. Is circled in red. The box inside the car is the new OEM front bumper.

Sweet ass build up..You got any spare leftover parts??I need a bunch of stuff for my mk3..

Hey, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Yes, I still have quite a bit. I used to have about two entire supras in my garage, but I threw away most of the big parts (Seats, panels, etc) I also sold tons of stuff on Ebay. What do you need??

funny, i just saw a thread on sf.com of people's trailers...then i'm on this thread and see the same trailer/4runner combo. car's looking good, but what is the reasoning behind TT'ing the 7m? and where are you located

Yes, that's me also on sf. lol.

About "Double Boosting" (I like how that sounds) the 7M, is primarely for response and unique-ness. I'm only looking to get about 500 WHP on boost alone, but I really want great great response, and not only while boosting, but all throughout the graph.

TTing the 7M effectively is complicated and costly. Most people would go against it because there isn't enough R&D. (I would probably go through a few set of turbos and header designs before I can find the perfect match for me. Doing the math alone is not enough sometimes.) That's why is so unique. There are currently only two Known 7MGTTE in the world, not including mine. There's one in greece and two here in the US including mine, which is not complete.

EDIT: Sorry, missed this - I'm located in the Lehigh Valley, Salisbury in PA.

Are you going with two different sized turbos and running sequential??If not I doubt there will be any more response to be had over a nicley setup twin scroll setup, but it will be one of a kind..
Props for sticking with the 7m btw, alot of people think they are far inferior to the 1jz but I would rather have a 7m..2jz different story:)
BTW I grew up in allentown and I know salsbury pretty well, the salsbury cops used to chase me all the time on my dirt bikes.. Hey, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. petey, there is more response from a TT setup then a single, but as I said before, I'm not looking for response only under boost, I also want a responsive engine on its own. Two different size turbos would be ALOT of work... They will be true twins, not seq.

About the motors...ummm, they are all unique in their own ways. I personally also prefer the 7M over a 1JZ just because of the torque line, but I love all three of them with their unique qualities. For this setup, I'm going with a 7M mainly because its the original motor and swaps are for cars with weak motors or for show, this is not a weak motor. If you disagree, just go here:

The 2J IS my favorite motor though.

While I'm here, might as well give an update right??

I've been stopping by the paint shop. The guys are all over the car. I'm very excited about the final product. These guys are very keen into attention to details.

Some things that are being done to the car are:

I'm covering the hole for the power antena, the hole for the rear wiper arm, and about 100+ holes in the enginge bay
They will be plug welded for better results and durability.

I also received the OEM upper nose. I was going to drop by today but there was too much traffic and didn't have enough time. Possibly tomorrow if not, next week.

I've been shopping for parts as well. I'm also working on the donor engines I have to see what I can and cannot use.

I will post some pics later on.

Suspension is never a small detail. What are the spring rates on the HKS? And are you doing anything with the arms? Like adjustable arms or replacing the bushings with something better?

True, I just meant, since is not listed, most people wont notice it.

Best way to describe the HKS Hypermax

http://www.hksusa.com/products/more.asp?id=716

About the arms, I'm buying everything A1 Racing has for the MKIII Supra. JIC also has front upper arms, but they give me neg camber and I'm looking for the opposite.

Bushings, yes. TRD has a package that replaces all the bushing on the car.

Wiisass
03-16-2007, 11:46 PM
They hypermax seem a little soft. But they should be nice for a street car. The ones I made for my brothers supra had 1000lb/in in the front and 600lb/in in the rear.

Good call on the A1 arms. I've heard the JIC's adjustment isn't that good. You're stuck running a lot of camber which isn't really necessary with that suspension geometry. Doesn't someone make Delrin bushings for all the arms or something a little harder than the TRD's?

^^^ that's the thing, I'm not looking for only performance, I'm looking for luxury/sport blend. I was keeping the TEMS on the car, but since I'm going 19" wheels, I need to drop it some more and lowering springs along won't cut it, otherwise I would've kept the Original electronic suspension on the car. How did you make the suspension on your brother's car?? Did you buy one of those kits you install on your struts??? Interested!!!

One more thing, what kind of car do you have??

Wiisass
03-17-2007, 07:41 PM
http://www.theoryinpracticeengineering.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=23

There's just a quick explanation of what I did for the car. It's an Mk3 supra. I always liked the idea of the TEMS system. It's more advanced that pretty much anything within normal reach in the aftermarket. Unfortunately, non of the dampers that work with the TEMS system are stiff enough to handle the springs that I wanted to run on the car. And I wanted to do my own valving. And since it's going to be a race car, there's no need to run the car on anything other than full stiff.

I personally have a couple 240's that I'm in some part of the process of building.

Supraholic
03-17-2007, 09:30 PM
^^^ wow, that's pretty impressive. Did you do all the work yourself? Do you do work for others?

Wiisass
03-18-2007, 12:30 PM
Thanks. I did everything myself except the actual machining of the aluminum pieces. I don't have access to a mill or lathe so I had to have someone else do them for me. But everything is my design. I still have some stuff I want to change for this season. There's clearance issues with the front upper control arms, so I'm going to try shortening the damper shaft and running a shorter spring so I can still have some adjustment. And it should help get the car to sit a little lower.

I do work for others as well. I'm not ready to sell these just yet, once we get a little more testing done on them I will be. I'm still not sure how they will last on the street. They're made from racing take apart dampers and I'm not sure if they're the kind that need to be rebuilt after every event or if they would be fine for a couple thousand miles of street driving.

Supraholic
03-18-2007, 08:39 PM
Have you found a way to retain the TEMS and have the height adjustability of coilovers? I would really like to keep my TEMS, but with lowering springs, I can only go so low. My main focus is not track performance for this particular car.

Wiisass
03-18-2007, 11:16 PM
I haven't really looked into a way to retrofit the TEMS stuff on other aftermarket coilovers. It wouldn't be that hard if you found dampers with the same adjustment method as the stock dampers. But then depending on how much you would have to turn the adjuster to get a real change in damping force, you might not even get any change with the amount the tems motor would turn the adjuster.

I mean you would get some change just by adjusting the damper, but would it be enough for the amount of work needed to get everything fit up? It's hard to say without knowing a lot about the dampers and the amount of rotation needed at the adjuster to make a noticeable change in damping.

Is it possible to weld and adjustable mount at the bottom where the spring rests?? This way you can adjust the spring rate and height but still keeping the stock struts and the stock strut mounts/tems?

For those of you following the build up, (a LOT of you who are not posting as well), here's a sneak peek!!

http://envisionbeautysalon.com/images/89supra/IMG_2619_SMALL.jpg

The hole where the wiper motor goes has been covered. All the small dings have been corrected as well...now they'll start plug welding the holes in the engine bay

Wiisass

Is it possible to weld and adjustable mount at the bottom where the spring rests?? This way you can adjust the spring rate and height but still keeping the stock struts and the stock strut mounts/tems?

I mean you could put a threaded sleeve on a damper that will work with the TEMS system. And then throw a helper spring on there along with the main spring and it would get you lower. I don't know how long the shocks would last in a situation like that. So there are ways you could do it.

And you won't be able to adjust the spring rate, you can add preload and change the height, but the spring rate, assuming it's a linear spring, won't change. And if you're using a helper spring to get lower you won't really be able to change the preload unless you compress the helper all the way and then it's not even worth having there.

And stock struts won't be good for spring too much stiffer than stock. They'll just be too underdamped.

http://www.supraforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=339951

That thread talks about putting sleeves on the dampers. He's using bilstein stuff, but the idea is the same.

What shocks work with TEMS? I thought there were only a one or two options and they aren't much stiffer than stock?

WOW!!!

So it gets to be a little bit of work when you have to update a few different forums    So here's a copy of an update from another forum.

As with any build, there are always more unexpected expenses. So I had to buy a new rear bumper from TOYOTA since the stock one is a little waivy and the guys at the shop told me to replace it instead.

http://supraholic.brinkster.net/supra/89supra/IMG_2976_SMALL.jpg

Also, I decided to go with the anti scratch clear coat. Is a few hundred bucks more, but should be worth it as black is really delicate. I have no idea where my car is right now...everytime I go to the shop, this is all I see...

:evil2: :evil2:
http://supraholic.brinkster.net/supra/89supra/IMG_2962_SMALL.jpg

So the car is completely stripped, windshields and everything. We're waiting for the clear and paint that were ordered. They should be here next Wednesday.

Also, both, rear and front subframes are getting sandblasted and then powder coated, hopefully they'll be here by next Wednesday or so. Here are a few pics of the underbody as I forgot to take any shots before, so I took some now. The under body has not received the second coat yet and is really dusty. There was so much dust you can see it on the camare lenses.

http://supraholic.brinkster.net/supra/89supra/IMG_3020_SMALL.jpg

http://supraholic.brinkster.net/supra/89supra/IMG_3021_SMALL.jpg

This rear lower control arm I had it powder coated because it was already sandblasted before I realized it will be replace with A1Racing arms.
http://supraholic.brinkster.net/supra/89supra/IMG_3022_SMALL.jpg

The bushings were replaced for the front subframe because I didn't take them out and they cooked. The rear ones I just cleaned them up a bit. They're in great shape and now because of the coating, the hole opening is smaller and the bushings are tighter :naughty:

Thanks for checking it out guys. I also CANNOT wait to drop the motor in, but I'm trying (and I mean REALLY trying) NOT to rush things and get it done right.

Update:

Ok, So I've been called just about anything (retard, crazy, etc) from my family and friends who cannot comprehend why I'm spending money on an old car instead of just buying a new one.

For this mod, even my family agreed it gave the car a nice touch. As you may know, I'm ALL about the small details you CAN'T see right away, as opposed to a BIG turbo or 22" wheels...lol. Here's what I did...

Chrome Door Latch - The one on the right is the original one.

http://supraholic.brinkster.net/supra/89supra/IMG_3197_SMALL.jpg

http://supraholic.brinkster.net/supra/89supra/IMG_3188_SMALL.jpg

Looks better in person. That's all for now. Stay tuned.

its the little things like that that make the car that much better than the next one...say you were to one day sell this car, a buyer would look and see that door latch was even restored showing that you spared no expense in order to take that next step above every other car

turbo4g63 - I couldn't agree with you more. Thanks for checking it out.

Here's a little update since I haven't updated for a while.

All the wiring is back in. Heavy! I can't even push the car anymore  oh wait, that's because of the flat tire.

Steering column w/ steering wheel and all that are back in...Heavy! I should've weighted it. Has to be at least 50lbs. But I do like the telescoping/memory and all that.

All the moldings are in...Heavy! Each molding has to weight at least 10lbs. J/K  no chrome strip yet.

Here's what I did a while ago...I moved the fuse box to keep the engine bay clean. I fabricated a metal bracket to support it. Is very solid. As you can see, I'm using new Zinc coated bolts and nuts. I'm trying to put as many new parts as I can. If I can't buy it new, then I just get them rebuilt.

The engine bay will have either SS bolts or Chrome bolts. Not zinc coated.

http://supraholic.brinkster.net/supra/89supra/IMG_3327_SMALL.jpg

http://supraholic.brinkster.net/supra/89supra/IMG_3332_SMALL.jpg

http://supraholic.brinkster.net/supra/89supra/IMG_3335_SMALL.jpg

All of this (wires & fuse box) will be covered with the Fender Liner. I will have an custom easy access door in case I need to access the fuse box.

http://supraholic.brinkster.net/supra/89supra/IMG_3336_SMALL.jpg

After that, I got most of the moldings installed, rear bumper, and some other things. Here's a picture of the moldings with the 3M tape on. This is where the chrome strips will be attached to.

Hey guys,

Update time! I've been doing a lot of reassembly tedious work!

Master Brake pump, disassembled, clean, treated, painted, and reassembled w/ new gaskets.
http://supraholic.brinkster.net/supra/89supra/IMG_3634_SMALL.jpg

Installed.
http://supraholic.brinkster.net/supra/89supra/IMG_3637_SMALL.jpg

I cleaned the ABS unit as much as possible. Also painted the support. I will have a custom chrome case to cover up the top.
http://supraholic.brinkster.net/supra/89supra/IMG_3807_SMALL.jpg

A/C coil before and after cleaning.
http://supraholic.brinkster.net/supra/89supra/IMG_3812_SMALL.jpg

http://supraholic.brinkster.net/supra/89supra/IMG_3813_SMALL.jpg

A/C condenser cleaned & painted. Also replaced old nuts and bolts with new zinc coated ones.
http://supraholic.brinkster.net/supra/89supra/IMG_3856_SMALL.jpg

Dashboard Support Bar. It had some surface rust from sitting outside. Cleaned, treated, painted, and cleared coated. I think I spent like 2 hours on this alone.
http://supraholic.brinkster.net/supra/89supra/IMG_3866_SMALL.jpg

I've been working on the custom wiring as well (Engine Push Start Button, Security System, audio, etc). Heating/cooling units are installed. All body speakers and wires, etc.

I've also been working on the chrome strips. I finally got some installed. WHAT A PITA!!!!! I had to remove the 3M tape the strips came with because it was a hair to thick and would make the strip stick out from the moldings. (I'm a maniac, it has to be perfect). Now is perfect. I should have pics soon.

OMG JDM

Ok guys, sorry about that. I edited the post and put the pics up. I'll post some more pictures of the car being taken apart and all that shortly. I have really high res picture that I have to bring down to a smaller size. For now, here's a photochopped version of what I want the car to look like sort of. As you can see below, I also have a midnight blue as that was one of my color choices while I was trying to decide which way to go. I also photochopped many more pics which I'll try to post along. Some I didn't put too much effort into editing so, you're welcome to laugh.

Thanks for all the comments.

Here's the car black with a chrome molding - Sorry, I'm not good turning black into chrome, so it looks a little out of place, but you get the idea. The actual size if the chrome strip is smaller.

Update!

The car is in ONE piece again!!! I still need to install the chrome strips for the pass side, but I think I might get smaller strips. I'm not liking how big they are and how they fit...I'm a detail freak I know :(

The car should go back to the shop sometime in March repolish the car and install the rest of the new OEM window trims..

Also, I contacted this company about making all my brake lines and fuel lines out of SS. They will all mount on the stock location and will be bent to stock specs. Once they're done with that, I'll take them to this place where the dip it in a fluid which makes Stainless look like chrome.

The fuel feed would be 1/2".

I've also been dealing with this guy and might get the DPE R05 wheels. That's if he can get me the deal we talked about

This is probably all I'm going to say for now and also, you will not see pics until after Feb probably.

I'll be traveling to Spain in late Jan with the family and that's a few G's...

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I'll be going 1JZ. The reason being that the 7M having such a big stroke will make things more dificult for me to achieve my goal of making the engine rev like a sports bike. The 1JZ has a 71mm stroke compared to the 7M 91mm stroke. Plus other reason I'll discuss later. Eventually I would like to see an ITB setup on this engine with double boosters.

Ok,

So I polished the turn signal markers and installed them, installed the R&P, installed the two front moldings (I was waiting on clips), installed the headlight covers...Took me 45min to install the covers, between the time it took for me to find the screws, to installing the covers.

Here are a couple of pics just so they won't close my thread...

http://supraholics.com/supra/89supra/IMG_5542_SMALL.jpg

Before I start getting flamed for taking 45 min to install headlight covers, let me just say that I try to pay maximum attention to details and try not to put one scratch on the paint :D

Here are a couple of pics of the bolts that go behind the marker lights...no one will ever see them, so why do I care to install new bolts there??? I don't know :D I just like it that way...

Sorry about all the dust, but I won't be cleaning it anytime soon until I get my air compressor repaired. I don't like paint swirls...

Nothing wrong with the job itself, except that they are very easy to outsource.

There is a guy in India with 5 degrees, who speaks 4 languages, and can do exactly what you do for $400 a month...

Companies look at these facts and say, why should I pay more if the gov is allowing me to go outside???

The funny thing is, they'll be getting cheaper labor, but won't decrease the prices of whatever it is they're selling...

Dell just closed an assembly plan here and outsourced the work to Malasya and now 9,000 people are out of a job. ASSEMBLY, not even tech support. Tech support is WAY easier to outsource. Watch your back, you might be next...

Whats funny is my mom, who is a very experienced programmer, just lined up with a large company that utilizes outsourcing for its application coding. Well, they're bringing it back over, because the applications are horribly coded, horribly documented, and who would have thought, the communication between the company and the coding firm is horrible.

A trend lately is to bring it all back home.

I do see a trend here, but is not what you're pointing out, is quite the opposite. There was a 50% decrease in 2007, but we're back on the boat again. They are also saying, when outsourcing doesn't go well, is mostly because of the people involved in the project.

Jobs Lost to Date* Projected Job Loss Jobs at Risk
300,000-995,000 3.3 million-6 million 14.1 million

* The total size of the U.S. Labor Force is 140 million jobs

The global outsourcing market continues to grow at a steady pace, with a forecast growth rate of 8.1% in 2008

I could be wrong. List some facts if you have any...

Once I get all the bolts, I'll drop the car on the ground, clean it up and take pics, especially to showcase the AWESOME looking Carbon Fiber winshield cowl I got from Raptor Racing.

I got an electrical engineer finish my circuit for the push start button and it will also include a turbo timer in it, which can be changed to different time intervals.

Once the outside is done, then comes the engine. Here are my plans so far:
I will do a 2.5JZ dry sump, with MoTec and ITBs.

What's a 2.5JZ??? Is a 1JZ block with 2JZ head.

I'm looking to have this kind of response:
http://jstylecars.com/?p=232

I'm estimating around $30K - $40K on the engine, so is gonna take me a while to finish, since I don't finance my fun. In the mean time, I'll build a stock 7M for the car. I promise is not gonna be a normal 7M though, the entire engine will be powder coated and ceramic coated. The finish will match the rest of the car. I'm not putting anything in there that's not following the same kind of "attention to detail" thinking policy I've followed for the rest of the car.

Also, and I'm not sure if I should say this now, BUT, I've been working with John from CCW and they are making me a 5 spoke wheel similar to the Kinesis K59R. They are currently very busy since they have unfinished orders and are moving to a new location, but he said sometime in the summer. We'll see how things turn out...

I wanted to have the car done by 2008, BUT life is life and I have to take care of my home and my family. They always come first so, I'm not in a hurry. I'll continue to drop money into this car until is done the way I want it.

I still have the Lexus IS, the Corolla GTS, the Cressida Turbo, and the bike to keep me entertained :biglaugh: and now I also have this to keep me happy http://www.lehighvalleygrandprix.com/, which BTW brings up a point - Who wants to meet there one day and we can all race????

First a quick shot of the Carbon Fiber windshield cowl. PLEASE excuse all the dust. The picture really doesn't do this piece any justice. I'll take better ones once I get the suspension reassembled and the car on the ground.

Still old but not as old Hub Spindle: After math of sandblasting.
http://supraholics.com/supra/89supra/IMG_5209_SMALL.jpg

The better than new Hub Spindle: All coated with POR-15. Now if you know me, then you know these are not completely done...gotta take care of the details http://www.supramania.com/forums/images/smilies/naughty.gif

Trac arm, rear tie rods, etc, all coated with POR-15. This stuff is AWESOME, expensive but AWESOME. The pic doesn't do justice either. I'll take better pics in the sun so you can really see the details. This stuff dries to an incredible rock-hard, non-porous finish that won't chip, crack, or peel.

God willing, this Thursday I'll be traveling 4 hours one way to get my custom SS fuel and brake lines made http://www.supramania.com/forums/images/smilies/naughty.gif I can't wait... They will fit on the stock location and will be bent to stock specs, except for a couple of bends like the fuel tank breather, clutch, and the fuel feed will be 1/2" http://www.supramania.com/forums/images/smilies/naughty.gif

Sorta. I'm installing all New trim outside. OEM Toyota trim that goes there was $250 at 30% off for me. This was $300. I think we can all agree this looks much much better...

Plus we all know this adds AT LEAST 50hp :supz:

NINJA EDIT:

I forgot to add that Wednesday I drove 700+ round trip to drop off my fuel/brake/clutch/PS lines to get them redone on Stainless Steel... There was a display at the customer service area and I must say they are Fantastic!!!! I can't wait to get the real thing. They told me it could take up to a month. They are really backed up at the moment...

You can get POR-15 at any paint supplier. And the Corolla is not going anywhere... Although I might consider a trade for a 02 Triumph.

Looks like I haven't "updated" here for a while... Let me try and get you up to speed :drag:

I may not have all the pics right now, but I'll post more later...

So far, I've continued to put the car together, I also had all the Brake, PS, Fuel, ABS, clutch lines duplicated in Stainless Steel. That took over a month or so... They are all the same as stock, except for the fuel line. The fuel line is -8 or 1/2" which is good for 1000RWHP+

http://supraholic.brinkster.net/supra/89supra/IMG_5979.JPG

http://supraholic.brinkster.net/supra/89supra/IMG_5985.JPG

THEN...
it took me a while to get them polished, just a little bit. I didn't want to go all out because all the polishing takes away the anti-corroding properties in stainless steel... At this point I had installed a few of them... Sorry about the image quality. I had the camera set on low and didn't realize it.

http://supraholics.com/supra/89supra/IMG_6057_SMALL.jpg

http://supraholics.com/supra/89supra/IMG_6061_SMALL.jpg

THEN...

After a few months of no activity, I decided to wash my car, even though I said I wouldn't until it was done... No wax or anything yet, just water to take the dust off it...

I also finished installing the Stainless Steel fuel and brake lines. Pics coming up. The rear subframe and diff are in.

After a few months of waiting (hurracaine IKE) I got my suspension bolts, but I'm a bit disappointed. I was hoping they were all going to match in color. They don't! Some are zinc coded, others are not, and some parts are anodized black, which is really cool...

Here are the new bolts (left) and the old bolts (right)
http://supraholics.com/supra/89supra/IMG_6873_SMALL.jpg

Here you can see the anodized alignment washers. Would be HOT if they all matched.
http://supraholics.com/supra/89supra/IMG_6876_SMALL.jpg

Sorry I don't have anymore pics, I was busy putting stuff together. I'll have pictures soon. I'm pretty confident that I'll have the car on the ground pretty soon...

I'll be putting in something a lot simpler for now. I guesstimated 35-40K for the engine build up. I few things have changed in my life and I can't afford to start that build up right now. Anyways, I've been messing around in Photoshop because I haven't purchased the wheels yet. I do have a set I'm using for now, but would like something to match the car once is ready to come out and play...

I've been having this thought of changing the look just a bit and going a bit more sporty... just crossing a little bit over from luxury to sporty...

What do you guys think? Initially I chose chrome from my two options which were Red strips or chrome strips... but lately I've been feeling the red look a LOT...

This was a very quick photoshop, don't mind the details:

Ok, a lot has happened since the last update...

I've talked to several trim companies/distributors about getting a specific size/style trim with no luck. After searching around so much and not finding exactly what I wanted (sorry, I'm picky. What can I do?), I decided to have my molding strip custom made out of aluminum. I won't be using my chrome strips anymore.

This I find is actually better. I'll be able to anodize them, coat or paint them to match the color of my wheels exactly.

So while TST was down they were finished...

The strips are all done (building them anyways). Sorry for the crappy pics... Next I ship a little piece to the "powder people" to see if they can get it done without warping the strips. If they warp, they'll get painted.

Some pieces had to be done a few times...part of that getting it perfect thing I'm cursed with :screwy: - All the bends are in. That was the hard part being that these are aluminum and not rubber
http://supraholics.com/supra/89supra/IMG_7684_SMALL.jpg

I polished a little piece just to see what it would look like. Just a quick polish...

Some of my custom parts from Beech performance. Many more already in the making, including my custom short runner FFIM.

Most of these parts will be polished or powder coated later. You can click on the images to see a larger image.

I caught up on the entire thread and commend you on your courageous build. Keep it up, I'm glad to see that others take the little details and make them important too. I don't know how much time and money I spent of replacing nuts and bolts with stainless or high grade chrome upgrades. Any way, I hope you don't decide to go with the red trim wheels, IMHO they are way too trendy and you would be better served with the HRE's if you have the funds. Also take a look at iForged or Kodiaks as an alternative...

Good luck and please keep us posted on your progress.

Supraholic
03-01-2009, 06:01 PM
Yup details are important and Expensive!

I've been back and forth MANY times with the chrome wheels, black centers/polished lips, red centers/polished lips, black centers/red lips and I decided on the red lips for now. I can always do a quick change, so is not permanent.

Iforged are junk for the money. HREs are good, but I'm going with Work wheels. I tried getting CCW to make me custom wheels, which they happened to be working on something similar, but I guess they are too busy and I don't want what they have out there now (design wise for my car). CCW IMO right now are the best bang for your buck. Super light, durable, just nice all around...

Thanks for all the comments. The photochop is a rendering of what the car will look like in the end.

I'll pickup my engine hopefully next weekend from North Carolina. It's not the dry-sump twin turbo I had originally planned. That would cost about $35-40K and I just can't do that right now...

The engine would be a fully built 7M good for 1000+ WHP, but I only want about 400-500WHP. My Custom fuel lines would also support 1000+ WHP, just in case...
