I know it wrong to do but yesterday I put a set of 215/45/17 on the rear and the stockers on the front of my wrx. Lug lock broke! Had to drive with the aftermarket rears and stock fronts for about 15 mins round trip to pepboys. Put the aftermarkets on all four and i had a rubbing sound in the back right rear when cruisng down speed off of the gas pedal. Also when very low in gear i hear a clank noise under the right side of car like something is loose. Put stockers back on and still a noise. Meineke says it sounds like rear diff and or gear box and to see a trans shop. Whats going on? Everyting is clear around the wheels and its def coming from back near the right and not under the center of the car.

yeah not a good idea to drive with different size tires. Check your tire pressure and see if the noise is still there. Might possibly be the diff. But its usually the center that will make a noise as such

i dont think it would b that you rode with different wheels, especially for only 15 minutes... yes, your AWD but im sure different size wheels wont break anything...
i run 6.5 inch fronts and 8.5 inch rears all winter, im sure your car can handle it for 15 minutes

awd is a different animal than 2wd, and you cannot run different sized wheels/tires. rolling diameter has to be the same. its not even good to run the same sized tire if one is worn and one is new.

could also be his rear diff. locks too

center diff takes a beating when you do this. I had to drive my car 10ft with a donut on one wheel and that had me worried. 15mins is def enough time to do some damage.

that sucks, but it cant be every AWD car... i think its the Cadillac SRX suv that comes from the factory with an staggered setup and AWD... stronger diffs?

You quoted the answer in your post....rolling diameter has to be the same.
Try not to give bad AWD car advice based on your RWD car.

so its b/c the Cadillac has stronger diffs that it can run bigger rear tires than front? thats what a staggered setup is, bigger tires in the rear, smaller in the front... staggered setup=different rolling diameter
doesn't make sense to me that Cadillac would do something bad for the car, even if they strengthened up the diffs, just tryin to clarify whats better about the Cadillac AWD compared to the Subaru AWD that they drive them out of the factory with something you say shouldnt be on any AWD cars at all

rolling diameter has to be the samerolling diameter has to be the samerolling diameter has to be the samerolling diameter has to be the samerolling diameter has to be the samerolling diameter has to be the samerolling diameter has to be the samerolling diameter has to be the samerolling diameter has to be the samerolling diameter has to be the sameThe width has nothing to do with it. rolling diameter has to be the samerolling diameter has to be the samerolling diameter has to be the sameGet it yet?
Now, back on topic, people.

CLOSED. SOLVED. FIXED!! Had to finally take it to A&T subaru and they actually looked at it for me and saw that the cross member was bent from the jack i used. Straightend it for me and thats it! No trans of diff. problem at all.

When they called me on the phone i was prepared for my nuts to drop to my ankles. Feels good for once to have a problem with the car and it only be a few bucks. Never happenes to me like that!!!

Jacking instructions are in the manual. If you're ever unsure, there's nothing wrong with looking through the manual.
