I moved back to PA in December of 2005. I was previously living in Fl for the past 10 years or so. I was driving a 1995 Chevy Lumina I bought from my parent’s just a short time before that. It had its problems but it was a dream to drive back and forth to Florida. Shortly after I got settled in here, the car started to have over heating problems. Actually while I was driving up here for an interview, I got a low coolant light but it went away shortly after coming on. This was the start of the downfall of this car. The poor car went through a lot in the next 2 months. It overheated on me on multiple occasions. Finally I gave up and had someone look at it. Yup as I expected, the head gasket was not only gone, it was pitting the heads. With a very high repair cost in front of me, I decided to put it to rest. Off to the junk yard it went.

I searched for a car for a week or so. I didn’t know what I wanted at all. I went to every car lot in the area and seen nothing I liked. Not a single car. Finally sitting at home one night without a ride, I opened up autotrader.com and searched for a coupe with under 30K miles and for less than $15K. The first car that showed up was:

http://gsnyder.info/bio/stock1.jpg
http://gsnyder.info/bio/stock2.jpg

I went to see it the next night. I arrived at the dealer quite late. So late that they were locking up the dealership. One of the salesmen said hold on I will take you for a test drive since you drove all the way out here, about 50miles.

When I got in the car I knew it was for me. Besides hitting my head while trying to get in, it fit like a glove. The suspension was great. The power was ok but doable. Everything about the car was what I was looking for. Funny thing is, 2 days ago, I never heard of a second generation Tiburon. The only thing I knew of them was the ugly ass first generation. Hell six months before that, if you would have asked me what I thought about Hyundai, I would have told you no way I would ever drive their POS cars. On February 2, 2006, I signed the next 4 years of paychecks away and off I drove.

Just before I bought the car, I signed up on newtiburon.com. I learned a lot about the car in short time. I learned about its good and bad points and what it could and could not do. From there I devised a modding plan that has changed multiple times a week. My ultimate goal for this car is not to be overly fast or out maneuver a track car. My plans are for an all around fun car that can keep up with friends and fellow car enthusiast when going to and from meets and such. I realize the car will never be a 900hp highway pull monster or a 500hp awd mountain road, make me poop my pants car. I just want something I can get in every day and enjoy driving.

My final plans are to have around 200-250 whp along with brakes and suspension to compliment the car. At this point forced induction is not in the plans at all. Or at least till openecu.org gets the factory ecu cracked and squared away. That’s probably years of if it ever gets finished. How I get to this point with the car has changed a couple times but still moving forward slowly. I dedicate some money to the car every month but don’t allow it to get in the way of my ultimate goal. That is to buy a house of my own and be able to eat my cheerios in the nude every morning. Ha Ha just kidding.

Here are some pictures for you to enjoy or puke, either way. Yes they suck but I am not photographer.

Thanks to Ryan at Area1320 for all his help and sometimes wisdom. Also for him bringing up that “I should have bought a Subaru!” every chance he gets.
Your comments or suggestions are definitely encouraged but negative attitudes are not welcome. Thanks.

Your tib looks good...

Dude I have a KDM 2 piston caliper, 12" rotor brake conversion that I'm selling...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v162/Keyan/IMG_1331.jpg

that's what they looked like on my car w/ a 17" rim when I had them installed.
The rotor is drilled for 4 and 5 lug and will bolt on to your tib.
I'm looking to get $300 for it....let me know.

Well here are the dirty brakes. Just need to clean them up a little. Some paint and sanding and I will be ready for this summer.
These will be accompanied by:
EBC greens all around
Rear drilled rotors
Rotora SS brake lines
ATE Type 200 Fluid

Anyone want to waste a Saturday?

I'm down for a sat morning install. :)

gary
03-24-2007, 03:36 PM
Well I am thinking about doing this 3 weeks from now.
This weekend is opening trout season
Next weekend I work
The weekend after I should be free. (April 14th)

I finally figured out what I am doing for now.
Fronts:
New caliper
Slightly used rotors
Slightly used pads
Install SS lines

Rears:
Paint the stockers
Install SS lines

I will run it this way till I rip up those rotors and pads then I will upgrade but for now this will due just fine.

So who's in. If it takes that long and its nice out, I can light the grill up and someone can make a beer run. No drinking till the car is finished though. =)

Side note, anyone know where I can get some ATE fluid locally?

Ender81
03-24-2007, 11:48 PM
Talk to Ryan for the fluid. I'm a little jealous I really want a brake upgrade hahaha. Some burgers and Beer sounds like a good way to spend a Saturday so I am definately down.

Ok, what a day. I did the 60K tuneup today and trans fluid flush. Now I know why it is over $300 to do it at the dealership. A little over 4 hours if you don't count the time it took me to track down a NGK spark plug. It turns out one of the six that I bought was damaged. The crappy bolts that Hyundai uses for brackets didn't help either. I snapped one off taking the upper intake manifold off with a small 1/4in ratchet?. I didn't need that bracket anyway. I was exhausted till I was done so I messed up and gave the car a small body modification. No don't worry the garage door was not harmed.

06-01-2007, 09:20 AM
The catch can was easy to install but took some imagination to fab brackets up that work better than the supplied hardware. If you are not into making things, I would suggest a more mainstream company. Here is the guy I got mine from:

what happend to the headers?

gary
09-06-2007, 01:36 PM
They are still in my garage waiting for some cash. The pulleys will go on with my 60K in the next couple of weeks along with a little special juice. The headers will be on around Christmas time or so.

tjf
09-06-2007, 01:38 PM
would you happen to know the gains of the pulleys? i see you got them from ark i need to make more power sooner or later

gary
09-06-2007, 07:19 PM
The gains are very minimal. They free up maybe 5HP. Some claim to see 5-10. These pulleys have to come off to complete the timing belt so its the perfect time to do them.

http://gsnyder.info/bio/pulley2.jpg

Area1320 also threw on the nitrous for me at the same time. Its not fully hooked up yet but its getting there.

The purge switch is the phone looking button at the top and the on/off is located inside the ash tray.

Ryan did a great job as usual. Just waiting for good time for both Ryan and I to finish this thing up before the snow.

OK look, two updates in one day but I had to. Just got my HIDs today (5000K). Go UPS for not ringing the doorbell.

The ballast sit right under the headlight assembly

I had to seal the grommets since my hole saw melted the plastic. No biggy.

The horrible cutoff with my fogs on and off. The color is all off.

Ha you want a review... they are bright, instant on, barely any warm up, and did I say bright. When I turn the high beams on, it makes the silverstars look like 50 year old yellow headlights. I turned mine down a little from stock so long distances in the dark are a little shady but with the high beams it evens it out. The little bit of driving I did last night, no one flashed me. The install took about an hour and a half and the hour was me waiting for my drill to charge. Me likey.

Ok since these jokers ruined my thread, lets get back on topic.

I am going to start installing and finish installing the rest of these parts I have setting around. Headers go in February 15th and 16th. If anyone wants to come by either of those days, I will have beer and food. Its going to be a cold garage so if anyone has a heater I can borrow is great too. Nitrous gets finished up soon after that. The porting of the manifolds, fuel pressure gauge and powder coating will get done early to mid spring. hmmm can't wait till this is done.

Gary, I saw a blue 03 in harrys up in new ringgold. I snagged the trunk shocks off of it for my Rx7 hood about 2 weeks about. They might have interior parts if you need any. I think I saw your car, up by clover hill winery right? Behind the state police barracks?

I did learn a few things today though:
1. A yellow, white, and black can can get lost a lot!
2. It really is how you use the pipe, not how long it is.
3. If the next bolt is rusty, smoke one first.
4. If it looks like it is done, look again because you have to take it all apart again.

Well the wideband and mafterburner are installed. That wasn't as bad as I thought but my fingers are bigger than the korean's so it wasn't easy. After all that, it works great except now my window doesn't work. =(

Well I still have some problems with the wideband integration into my fuel computer but that should be resolved within the next few days. Here is a quick log on the way home from work tonight. Wow do i need to pull some fuel. The reason it seems to be logging so fast is because I was going up a hill and the rpms changed slower. This is a 3rd gear pull to 80MPH. Ohh yea this was on my own personal 1/4 mile track btw.

Thats weird that your VTEC engages at 3k rpms. You need to get that **** checked out.

Well not VTAK but with the following graph you can really see what the car is doing. You can see the really lean low end, a little rich but not bad middle, and then the rich as hell upper end. The Tiburon is known for dieing in the upper end since the intake manifolds aren't large enough, hence the really rich condition. It is also known for having no low end power after headers are installed. Now that I the graph, all this is obvious.

I have never tuned anything in my life so this will be interesting. I'm going to do some more pulls and play with the air/fuel a bit. I may end up taking this to someone till it is all done, who knows.

congratz on doing the header install yourself. I just ordered a set of ARK headers for my GT and i've gone ahead and requisitioned some help for my install. We're gonna have to compare sound clips afterwards and see who is more badass :)

bah. Gary gimme a crack at it. I would pull fuel out of everywhere. One thing you want to keep an eye on is the timing on that thing

Yea mine would have went much faster if I had a 3rd hand. When your's is done, let me know. Maybe I will have a sound clip by then.

Yea lets do it. Let me know when. The only thing I can't monitor is timing at this point. I am ordering a ODBII scanner with the options to monitor knock and timing but won't have that for a while.
On a side note, you will be much happier with this laptop. It runs so nice. Don't be a douche and put XP on it again though.

Well working 2nd shift and getting out at midnight has given me plenty of time to play on the closed highway I take home. Here is 5% lean across the board. Still need to pull more fuel from about 4500 on up and add a tad to the very bottem end. Wow this is like night and day just with hitting one button. I'm not doing any permanent changes till I get the cat on. Stupid ebay retailers won't return emails or voicemails. I am giving them till Monday to return my call and if nothing them I am ordering from Verocious like I should have. There goes my 100% positive feedback. Well anyway here's another pretty graph.

Well I received my cat, flanges, and a section of pipe from Verocious today. Wow they ship fast. I ordered it Monday night and it was thrown in my garage this morning. Good job Verocious. So that will be going on as soon as Ryan has some time and my car can be down. Hopefully next week. I also figured out how I am going to get the heater codes from tripping since the headers went on so that is all good. The best news so far is my baby will have a new home by the middle of July. It is a nice quiet neighborhood in Northampton. =)

Your headers? I paid for them bitches, haha. They are working great. The installation was a bitch though. If there could be a problem, there was. I can't believe I waited this long.

Nice. I had an '03 Tib that I modded the hell out of and then totalled it in an accident. It looked like it had less damage than yours and both air bags went off. I was pissed that they totalled it.

Well the cat is all welded up thanks to Ryan. The car feels so much better with a little bit of back pressure. I have to go for a dive tomorrow night and video it. This thing sounds so nice at WOT. Tonight I figured out the wideband/mafterburner problem too. Tomorrow I will fix that up.

So the list of things to do is:
1. Road tune map 1
2. Extend switch wires through the firewall
3. Finish the nitrous install
4. Road tune map2 for nitrous
5. Find a really cheap dyno to see what this thing is putting down
6. Swap the engine after I blow it up =)

I have the greatest news so far....

The best deals are made over a cold tall glass of lager. I may have just bought a very nice, cheap beater with less than 45K on the clock. I have never thought I would buy a Hyundai but I said I would hang myself if I bought a Daewoo. Yes I said it, a f'n Daewoo. I am going to see it tomorrow so we shall see.

no I al looking at it today... but it is a 43K 30mpg beater car. Not like I will be taking it to the track with its 140HP.
