anyone on here have personal experience with them? i want to make sure it's a good car for her. it'll probably remain stock but will she still be able to have fun with it ? she doesn't want anything excesivly fast, but not a slug either. how is the ride quality? comfortable interior? hopefully she will test drive one soon

Go drive one. Oh and if it's stick, you drive it. I fear for my life whenever i see her drive stick.

Well, I work at a DUB dealer, The new GTI's are badass! Even the ones that aren't stick, the automatic is a paddle shift and they are nice as well. They are a 2.0 turbo and are quick for what they are. If you have ANY questions let me know and if she is seriously looking for one, I can hook you up with a salesman that is a friend of mine and will give you a really good deal.

Ive driven the Rabbit and the GTI. If she doesnt want something fast, but still has pep, I would go for the Rabbit. It is almost exactly like the GTI but obviously doesnt have all the luxury the GTI does. I really enjoied both of them.

You mean you drove MY GTI :P

I have an 06 and I love it. I haven't had any issues with it at all. I had one TSB I took it for to have the soft clipping on the radio raised, but that was really a preference thing. I just hit 12,000 on mine and nothing but routine oil changes and tire rotations that have needed to be done. I have the leather interior with the heated seats as well (Pkg 2) and the DSG transmission.

The GTI has a lot of luxury stuff included. The Bi-Xenon Autoleveling HID's are quite nice that's for sure. The 6 CD/MP3 Changer is nice too. Overall I love it. It's relatively quick as well. If you don't need all the fancy stuff though the Rabbit is a wonderful alternative and a good 5k cheaper depending on how you equip each.

I'd stay away from the 18" Hufeisen wheels though, since they're heavy as hell and I'm not particularly a fan of them.

But the only problem with the Rabbit is that a lot of its options are only available with the 4-door. Not sure why though.

oh my gosh man i was so scared she was going to hit your car for a second there! i was like "give it a LITTLE gas while you ease off the clutch" next thing i know she's bouncing off the rev limiter about to dump the clutch

i'm yelling I SAID A LITTLE GAS NOT FLOOR IT "IM SORRY IM SORRY" ( still revving it while she says sorry )

I'd go for a VW Eos over the Cabrio personally.

I bought an 06 when they first came out, me and the ex. When I kicked her out I made her take it and got my ass off the loan, but anyway we had nothing but a great experience with the car.

They don't make the cabrio anymore, unless she gets it used. The eos is a very nice ride.

My father works at a VW delarship so we took one out when they came in. It's not quite as fast as a WRX or cars along those lines but it does hold it's own and is comfortable. I think it would be in line with what she's looking for. My only warning would be make sure she doesn't miss anything maintnence wise, that's as good as begging a vw to break.

I know, they stopped making them in like 2002? That's why I was suggesting the Eos. That and it's a hardtop convertible.

The Eos is too much money imo though, for what you're getting.

Agreed, but if her dad is paying for it might as well.

i drove a manual gti and a DSG audi a3.....

i have a close friend who has an mkv and he likes it, the brake pedal is a little soft and the suspension could be stiffer, the headroom is TOO much....making me feel like im in a green house or some crap, but to normal people all of thats a good thing.

the combo of direct injection and a turbo are lethal, the torque is everywhere and its great for merging and passin on the highway. i would suggest against the performance tire/wheel combo bc those continentals are noisey and suck in the snow. if shes gonna be drivin it year round and shes not huge for cornering or whatev, id say stick with the all season tires, my friend's continentals were making me nauscious.

and if she gets the "automatic" instead of the manual thats just fine, they use a direct shift gearbox that shifts wicked fast and its a blast to bang thru the gears. if u really wanna bore her u can explain the workings of a dual clutch trans but im sure shes sick of car talk by now anyway....
remember, its not actually an automatic so dont call it that,

other than that, yeah sure it seems cool for her or whatev.just dont be in tC's boat and have ur name of her loan as well, not to jinx or relationship or anything but uh, be realistic. lets just say im glad i didnt cosign my ex gf's mazda6........

enjoy it!

meh, turbo lag is gay

it's an auto, and kind of boring to drive, but switching to the tiptronic and using the paddle shifters is pretty awesome. i like the ride quality but i wish the turbo spooled quicker

dwl137
04-11-2007, 09:22 AM
You think the GTI has turbo lag? Wow, dont ever ride in a WRX then, lol.

BluMeanie
04-11-2007, 11:23 AM
Yea I thought it was quite peppy. Didnt notice the turbo lag when I drove it, but it also spooled up faster than the Beetle. The a/t in the MkVs are very efficient and just as quick as the manual.

Nice pick up! I've got an A3 2.0T 6MT, and I really don't notice much turbo lag at all. Especially when cruising around 3k and punching the gas it gets going very quickly. Just my thoughts.

Oh, and the GTI 6MT ran a 14.5@95 1/4 mile in the last C&D, so it's definitely not slow. ;)

:screwy:

a vdub employee nor owner would ever call DSG an auto.

it has a clutch ( 2 ) and no torque converter.

Actually every VW dealer I've gone to refers to the DSG as the automatic option. While it IS a dual automated clutch manual, it does shift by itself, so they refer to it as an auto. Granted it is quicker than the manual, but in the end, it's just a name, it's how it works that matters. I could care less that I have an "automatic" in my GTI.

I have it in paddle mode 90% of the time anyway.

ic
is it similar to the SMG ?

NOPSTNS
04-17-2007, 06:25 PM
no, the smg still has clutch packs and uses AT fluid. the DSG uses gears and two clutch discs to hold different gears (one disc for even numbers, one for odds). the DSG (now officially called S Tronic) is referred to as an auto so that they dont confuse the idiot car buyers in america....my friend has a gti mkv in 6 speed manual and it runs great, mushy brake pedal, but fun nonetheless

Audi calls it S Tronic, VW is still using the term DSG, but both are exactly the same.

Here is a decent video for information on what it is and how it works

SMG2 used the two clutch setup right ?

Ive driven a smg m3 before and they have a few different " S stages "

think s4 was the best.

Nope. SMG, Ferrari F1, Maserati DuoSelect, Lamborghini E-Gear all use a single clutch.

I saw a guy with two black stripes on his, though the Stripes were too thin IMHO.

Farenheits only come with DSG trannys IIRC
