First of all, I'd like to thank The Law for his service to this forum and I'd like to thank Troll for getting someone to handle the 'Ask the Law' thread.

Anyway, this post isn't time-senstive so feel free to answer it at your leisure. I was just curious:

Once you pull someone over, do you have your mind made up on whether or not you are going to give the offender a ticket. And, what can a person do/say to get out of a ticket. When you ask an offender "Do you know why I pulled you over" will you let them go if they admit to the offense? Will you be more likely to issue a ticket if they don't admit to the offense or try to give you an excuse.

Basically, I'd just like some pointers on how to get on a Cop's good side once I get pulled over.

Thanks. And, like I wrote above, this post isn't time-senstive. Respond to it at your leisure.

There really is no all-encompassing answer to that question. An officer is just another person doing a job, and every person has a different way of handling the situation. To keep it simple, always be courteous and respectful. When you're pulled over, roll your window all the way down and keep your hands somewhere in plain sight (such as on the steering wheel). One of the most dangerous routine jobs an officer has is approaching a vehicle with unknown occupants under unknown circumstances. A well-trained officer will always be cautious and prepared for the worst, so making him feel comfortable is always a good start. Other than that, it all depends on too many factors to make a general statement. Everyone has good days and bad days, including police officers, and not making the situation worse is your best bet.
