Well I am bringing home my 86 Camaro IROC-Z. Now the car has been sitting awhile inside a garage (the car is being towed home) and I was wondering what I should do right away to the car to prepare it to be driven alot more? I am going to change the oil, clean the motor up, and look for any leaks. The engine is a 305 5.0 with a T-5 speed. Anything I should do to the tranmission. I was to clean and change anything now before I start driving the car full time, so I don't run into any surprises. I think the motor takes 5W-30 i will have to see. The mech part of the car is great. Alot of the parts have been upgraded or replaced, and the motor/trans seems strong. Deff one thing I am doing right after I get the car home is oil and car-cover.

5w-30 is a bit thin for an old car, especially in the summer. I'd stick to 10w-30. Other than that, I'd put a new fuel filter on, give her some drygas, and either change the belts or throw an extra in the trunk. Some carb cleaner may not be bad either.

New air cleaner, fuel filter (important), plugs/wires, 10w30 is your best bet and if I were you, I'd flush the radiator out. Probably good way to find out if anything leaks.

Oh yea, hoses. radiator upper/lower, and if its gonna be a daily driver, check that serpentine belt guy  i threw one off my formula w/ the same motor doing 55mph. Don't wanna car completely shutting off at high speeds w/ loss of power steering

If that's your car in your avatar, it looks like it'll be sweet with a little bit of TLC.

He already said it was a 350.

And IROC-Z's always had 350's, I think.

Yeah, they're quick. My friend has an '88 T/A with a 305. But it's an auto. BOOOOO. Still quick, and it looks exactly like KITT from Knight Rider.

Not all the IROC-Z had 350. The 350 5.7 only came on automatic F-body cars. However mine is a 5 speed and the 5 speed F-bodies only came on the 5.0 (as well as automatic's). The T-5 5 speed used back then wasn't strong enough for the torque of the 5.7. I also think that the 5.7 never came in any T-top cars due to weakness of frame.

This car I said i was going to pick up, was a dead beat... looking at an 85 IROC-Z now.

If you get one of these Z's with over 75k miles you might consider running 20w50 in the engine. That engine is notorious for bad valve guides and such. Also be sure to change the gear oil in the t-5 and in the differential. If the diff. is posi traction you will need GM posi additive for the oil.
