For those who want a quick outline: (cliff-notes)
White/silver SUV goes by at 51mph in a 35, with a burnt out tail light.
Officer pulls vehicle over.
Woman refuses to comply, officer also notes broken windshield.
Investigation reveals woman's license to be suspended.
She gives the officer major attitude, and pulls the race card.
Officer gives multiple warnings, she ignores and continues talking on a cell phone.
She attempts to strike an officer, and they taze her.
She wails on the ground for like five minutes. Hilarity ensues.

I'm being sarcastic, but am I the only one that saw something wrong with that....
I mean, yank her out, or better yet give her some time to figure out she is in deep 5hit and let her get out on her own. Was it really that important to get her out of her car in under 60 sec?
I can justify this type of behavior if the person was carrying a lethal weapon or had actually committed a real crime, but no license, please. Why not tase every drunk idiot who kills someone while operating a motor vehicle. That, I would like to see.
And you know she is going to sue. And probably win. And then the average tax payer ends up eating the bill.

I think the cop was perfectly reasonable.
She was driving on a suspended license.
She was doing 51 in a 35 zone
She had a broken windshield
She wasn't wearing a seatbelt
She began behaving like an asshole the minute he started talking to her. Before he even had a chance to tell her why he had stopped her.
She continued to behave like an ass throughout the remainder of the stop.
She was very clearly warned 3 times to exit the vehicle before being tased.
Whenever I get pulled over, I shut off the car, grab my documents (if they're easy to get), then wait with both hands visible on the steering wheel.
Also, even if you dispute the charge, the scene is NOT the time or place to do it. You fight the ticket in court. Fighting the officer on the scene is only going to end up with you getting arrested, and possibly maced or tased.
Cops have a hard job. Never knowing when a routine traffic stop is going to go bad because some whackjob did an 8ball of coke. Sure, some of them are walking penises. Most of them are just people trying to do a job. If you make it easy for them to do their job, most of the time it goes much easier on you.

Its called Use of Force model. In most law enforcement departments, if a prep assaults an officer with their hands or legs, that officer or other officers are allowed to respond to the prep's aggression by one step higher, which is non-lethal weapons. She swung twice at the assisting officer, so the arresting officer responded to her force by using a non-lethal weapon to disable her ability to attack the assisting officer.
She may win a lawsuit if she gets some liberal filled jury but legally she doesnt have a case.

[She was driving on a suspended license.]
Why was it suspended. Was it cause she didn't pay parking tickets. That wouldn't be a big deal to me. Do we really know. Did the officers know that sort of stuff.
[She was doing 51 in a 35 zone]
How many of us here have beat that. How many of us have even doubled or tripled the posted speed limit. I know this board is full of speeders. No big deal. Not like she was weaving in and out of traffic and almost killed someone.
[She had a broken windshield]
How many of us have something wrong on our cars so that it won't pass inspection.
[She wasn't wearing a seatbelt]
How many of us put on something or deliberately take something off that is illegal.
[She began behaving like an *no cursing!* the minute he started talking to her. Before he even had a chance to tell her why he had stopped her.
She continued to behave like an ass throughout the remainder of the stop.]
To me that makes her ignorant, or stupid, or maybe even retarded. Would you taze a mentally retarded person for not obeying commands?
[She was very clearly warned 3 times to exit the vehicle before being tased.]
They could have told her 3-100 times to get out before they opened fire and killed her. But still, that wouldn't be right.
[Whenever I get pulled over, I shut off the car, grab my documents (if they're easy to get), then wait with both hands visible on the steering wheel.]
And if it's dark out I turn on my interior lights, make sure the radio is off, the window is down and never move towards the officer unless he asks me to. I have great respect for them. I've got five neighbors that live right across the street from me that are cops (2 retired, 1on disability, one of which was ex-captain of SWAT, a parole officer, and Internal affairs) and it's one of the reasons I love this neighborhood so much. They are all cool and we get along.
But we aren't allowed to hit kids anymore, in school, out in public, or even at home. And there is a reason. Violence breeds violence.
[Also, even if you dispute the charge, the scene is NOT the time or place to do it. You fight the ticket in court.]
Agreed. Take her keys. Tow her car. Make her walk to court and then take all her money too. Fine with me.
[Cops have a hard job. Never knowing when a routine traffic stop is going to go bad because some whackjob did an 8ball of coke.]
I feel bad for those officers that are nice and are usually the ones that get shot or killed. It's hard to anticipate an agressor's next move. But I'm sure most cops are fully aware of the type of person that can become a threat. To me, she just never seemed like any kind of threat. To me, it seems like they were just pissed and put her in a situation so they could taze her.
Just not right to respond to ignorant people by inflicting pain on them. For all we know she could have just been having a bad day. Maybe she just found out her husband got killed in Iraq. Now if that were true wouldn't that suck.

I don't know, and to tell the truth, it doesn't matter. From the video, it appears as though it was the suspended license that caused her to be arrested. In some places, things like that automatically mean that the subject is to be arrested. Period. Do not pass go, do not collect $200.
To me that makes her ignorant, or stupid, or maybe even retarded. Would you taze a mentally retarded person for not obeying commands? Absolutely. I was in the military for 11 years. Dealing with the unknown in situations like that, you have to use judgement to protect yourself, lest you become a casualty. IMO, even though he protected himself, he was completely professional throughout the entire stop.
They could have told her 3-100 times to get out before they opened fire and killed her. But still, that wouldn't be right.Yes, it would. She was given fair warning about what she needed to do, and the consequences of failure to comply.
To me, she just never seemed like any kind of threat. To me, it seems like they were just pissed and put her in a situation so they could taze her.I disagree. To me, she showed immediately that she was going to be difficult to deal with. The officer handled the situation professionally and attempted to arrest her. She resisted arrest. The officer used the necessary force to subdue her and place her under arrest. Case closed. I saw no malice in either of the officers actions.

Just the fact that she was driving with a suspended license makes her a huge threat. She has alot to lose by being arrested and obviously she wasnt afraid to break the law by driving with a suspended license. She was being uncompliant and refused to exit her car, aka a way to escape. Then she became physical with the assisting officer. Now she is an uncompliant, assaultive, illegally driving perp with the ability to take off in a 4500lbs piece of metal that hasnt been checked for weapons or something she is trying to hide.
As an MP, if I was in his position on a military base, that perp would have been maced and a baton hit to the side of their dome. Which would be a crap load more painfull and dangerous then a harmless tazer.

Are you seriously trying to defend this womans actions and say the police were wrong? She was a raging bitch and was totally uncooperative the entire stop. Then when they ask her to step out of the car she keeps talkign on the phone and giving someone on the other end their location then she swings at the assisting officer. One, how do they not know that the person she is on the phone with isnt going to try and come and start more trouble. SO that is one reason to get the woman to start complying quickly and get it over with. two, she swung at an officer... i dont even think that needs to be explained. That to me says threat, sure they could have sat there all day while she had her phone conversation and waited until she was ready to get out of the car. But the fact of the matter is the second she decided to get in a car without a liscense she became a threat. She no longer has the rights to be take her time, she put herself in that situation and has to do what they say. If she doesnt have a liscense she most likely doesnt have insurance, you want her smashing into your car and saying opps, i cant pay for it sorry and then leaves because you cant trace her down anyway.

Not at all!
But I do think the cop used excessive force. Instead, I think they should have yanked her out and forced her to the ground before tasing her.
A lot of you guys make fun of tasers but anything that makes a healthy conditioned adult pee and poop their pants can be quite deadly to most other people with health problems. I bring up the health issues cause my wife is a cardiologist and I understand how those things work. And that lady looked like a walking heart attack waiting to happen.
Time and experience will tell but already we are hearing numerous deaths caused by tasers. So to me, using a taser is equivalent to smashing her over the head with a club. Might be ok to club people in the military but you can't get away with that with regular civilians.
wrx_snobordr
06-04-2005, 05:15 PM
Well tasers do have diff levels of power, I would hope they didnt have it on full since it obviously wouldnt take to much to knock her down. but i think the reason they used th taser instead of physical force is because with physical force both parties can still be injured. if they try and drag her out of the car she can kick, claw, bite, punch... you get the point and if she is resisting the stronger cop can easily break one of her bones, pop a shoulder or other bone out of the socket, tear a muscle not to mention the physical harm that could come to the officer. What if in the scuffle the perp gets injured, now a cops job is to stop crime but it doesnt mean they have to subject themselves to biohazards, wich in this day and age is what blood can be with all the diseases around. So while they obviously could have over powered her and got her in cuffs this is mich safer for both parties, especially the cops who do deserve protection.

tell me they weren't dying to use that tazer. Hope she didn't have any heart complications.I think you're reading more into it than there was. The vast majority of people in jobs that sometimes require the use of force aren't doing it because they have tiny penis syndrome. They're doing it because it feels rewarding to help the public at large. They don't "want" to tase people, or even arrest people for that matter, unless it's in the interest of public safety. They just want to do their job and go home like the rest of us.
Unfortunately, sometimes idiots put them into situations where they have no choice but to use force to take someone off the street who is a danger to the public.
That's just my .02 cents. As someone who's been in that situation, you're not sitting there thinking "man...I'm so gonna beat the crap outta that guy before we take him in". All that's going through your mind is, let's get through this without anyone getting hurt or killed.

Nice attempt at being a smart a$$ but taser, the brand, is one of the main suppliers of law enforcement non-lethal stun guns. So just as q-tip, a brand, has become the term for cotton swab and band-aid, also a brand, is the term for adhesive bandage so too has the brand taserhttp://www.taser.com/index.htm become the industry accepted term for stun gun.
