Hi all, new guy here. Thought I'd start a journal so everyone can see basically what I'm about. Hope you all enjoy.

I bought a 2005 STi in October of '04, my first new car, and my 5th Subaru at the time (now have owned 7, currently own two). Here's some pictures of the car in its bone stock condition.

2005 Subaru Impreza WRX STi
Crystal Grey Metallic
Silver Wheels

That didn't last very long though. I went to a Cobb stage 2 setup shortly thereafter by adding a Helix catless downpipe and a Cobb Accessport. Dyno'd it at Xotic and the graph showed a healthy 282whp and 307wtq.

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b175/MrHorhay/dyno.jpg

Followed that up with a big spurt of buying. Got some Work Emotion CR Kai's, a V-Limited replica lip, a Process West remote oil cooler, a set of ZEAL V6 coilovers, Cusco sway bars, Cusco lower brace, Cusco lightweight strut tower bars (titanium in the front and carbon in the rear), Goodridge brake lines, Pagid blue pads and of course the brake fluid. I also got some other bling, like a JDM hazard button and an STi titanium shift knob along with an Agency Power short shifter.

As you can see, I was lucky enough to have Petter Solberg sign my ash tray door. Yes, you can also see that I'm a dork.

I then picked up an STi GeNOME axle back, which is my favorite exhaust for Subaru's. The sound is AMAZING.

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b175/MrHorhay/IMG_0250Medium.jpg

I then had an opportunity to do my first autocross, and luckily enough a local happened to capture the whole thing on camera.

I'll leave it there for the time being while I get together all the pictures of what I've gone through since.

I also got a great deal on a nice small FMIC, the Injen Phantom FMIC and CAI. I was very pleased with the response offered by this intercooler with the stock turbo, as well as the complete lack of heat soak.

As you can see, I also ditched the Work's because of the excessive weight they added. I'm still looking for a nice set of 18's that weigh a decent amount.

I'm now working on installing and tuning my new power setup. Nothing too crazy, as I'm really only looking for 350whp or so, with little lag and good daily driving abilities. The new setup is a Forced Performance 20G turbo, Helix injectors, walbro pump, and a Process West V-mount intercooler. I'm still waiting on the V-mount to get here (its the first one in the US so its been a bit of a wait) but once its here I'll be able to post some pics of it.

Ive still got the oil cooler, not sure yet what I plan on doing with it. I plan on trying to find a way to use it with the v mount.

When I first got into the Air Force, I needed a car, but didn't want to spend much money. I was engaged and wasn't sure how much everything was going to cost me and I really wasn't getting paid much. I know, thats a shock. So I passed on the opportunity to get a WRX, never even considered an STi, and got a super clean 1999 Subaru Impreza L. This is the only Subaru Ive had that I really kept any photos of. Here it is when I got it.

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b175/MrHorhay/P1010144.jpg

I ended up doing a good little bit to it. It was slow, and I knew I wasn't gonna change that without a turbo kit or more likely an engine swap, but I couldn't justify the money to myself. So instead I focused on making it look better and be more fun to drive. I got a Cobb short shifter, Tein springs, Rota Attacks in 17" and bronze, I got a full exhaust including header, mainly for the sound, clear lights all around, and my favorite, the JDM taillights. Here's the car before I sold it.

My full Subaru history (unfortunately without pics) is as follows:
1986 Subaru RX Turbo (first car, looking for one in the area to buy)
1989 Subaru RX Turbo (bought after the first RX was hit by an F350)
1993 Subaru Impreza L station wagon (totaled in a slow rear ending accident)
1999 Subaru Impreza L sedan (listed above, sold to improve my credit for STi purchase)
2005 Subaru Impreza WRX STi (obviously, what this thread is about)
1997 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport (sold to a friend recently, motor blew so I'm thinking about buying it back for a WRX swap)
1997 Subaru Legacy L (wife's car)

7 total, at one point I owned 3 Subaru's at once. I'm a pretty big fan.

No updates unfortunately since Christmas. I've been stuck in Oklahoma without my car. When I get back in April I'll get it up and running, and back on the road. Hopefully it'll have a bit of bling as well by that time.

I am thinking I might sell my oil cooler when I get back. Its worked great, never had a problem with it, but my cooling system will be significantly upgraded with the new IC setup that I don't think I'll need it.

Oh, and here's a couple more pics of the car, just for fun.

horhay

no noticeable lag with the Injen FMIC. I'm extremely interested to see how the 20G and the V-Mount work together. I'm hoping that there is very little lag there too. I see myself getting a wild hair up my butt one day and flippin the IM around to really have some short pipes. Hopefully that doesn't happen anyday soon!

The install has started!

It is a surprisingly easy (up to this point) installation. The kit is obviously VERY well made, and obviously took alot of engineering time to complete. Enjoy the pictures everyone. I'll try and finish the project tomorrow, maybe I'll even get to drive the STi this weekend!

I haven't driven my car on the streets in something like 8 months. Its my 3rd string car, behind my 03 X5 and 97 Legacy. I really only drive it for auto-x's and to go to get togethers. I bought it in Sept 04, and put 24k miles on it by Sept 05, and it has barely 26k now, in May 07. Thats how rarely it gets driven.

The STi came out of the garage for the first time in around a year yesterday. It got loaded onto a trailer and towed up to Andrewtech Automotive in Gaithersburg, MD. They'll be fixing an oil leak and then looking over all the systems on the car to make sure that its road worthy before it goes for a tune. I figured since the dang thing hasn't been driven in so long that I'd better make sure it still knows what to do!

Subaru Challenge is a big Subaru only autocross event. Its a good time for sure! You should definately come down to MD for it, even if you don't autox, its fun just to hang out.

2007 Mid Atlantic Region Event #1
Ripken Field - Baltimore, Maryland - September 22nd, 2007

The Subaru of America Mid Atlantic Region is pleased to host the 2007 Subaru Challenge Event Mid Atlantic Region Event #1 at Ripken Field in Baltimore, Maryland.

I would like to take this opportunity to tell you what the Mid Atlantic Region Subaru Challenge is and what it is not.

It is…

· A Subaru customer appreciation event designed to enhance your Subaru ownership experience.

· An exclusive, Subaru only event. No other make vehicle will be allowed to compete.

· Your opportunity to have fun with your fellow Subaru enthusiasts and to meet some of them in person for the first time.

· Your opportunity to test your Subaru’s capabilities and your driving skills in a controlled and safe environment.

· Your opportunity to see some pretty tricked out Subaru’s and be able to talk to their owner/creators.

What the Mid Atlantic Region Subaru Challenge is not…

· It is not and never will be a forum for Subaru personnel to take pictures and record VIN’s to void future warranty claims.

· A boring waste of your time.

Please accept our personal invitation to attend this 2007 Mid Atlantic Region Subaru Challenge Event. Keep checking this site for more details and take a look at the previous events section. It only costs $TBA to participate and you will have ten times that much fun if you attend. Update from the guys at Andrewtech:

The car is running with no more oil leak. Apparently there was a missing gasket on the oil drain fitting on the turbo. That has been cleared up though and they are now just completing a thorough check of the car to make sure everything is working as it should. They did find an issue with a power steering line, so that is being replaced as well.

That leaves just a couple things for me to work on for the time being.

1. The car needs a new front bumper, and I'm having a heck of a time finding one that I like but is also not ridiculously expensive. My favorite front end out there is the Burn-Up WRC03 front end, but $1200 for an unpainted bumper makes me flinch a bit.

2. The car will DEFINITELY need a tune. I'm thinking Agile Auto for that. I guess I should call and see if they have any time for me.

3. I think its time for tires. The stock RE070's (3 are even the original tires!) have been good to me but I think they're getting close to their life cycle.

So anyone have any suggestions for any of those three issues?

CHAOS

1 are you looking for aftermarket or OEM?

2.why not verocious/andy? they are in wilmington now. agile has an equally good rep im just wondering.

3. RE-01R's.

horhay
07-24-2007, 10:20 AM
1. I'd like to do something different, like a non-flashy aftermarket item, but I'll probably end up with a stock STi front end with a V-limited lip.

2. verocious/Andy? the old xotic guy? Hmm, Wilmington is much closer...do you have any contact info?

3. I'll keep those in mind

Alright. So I picked the car up yesterday. Anyone notice I didn't reply to my journal yesterday? Thats because I was out driving it as much as I possibly could! I don't know if its because I haven't driven the car in over a year but the car is just so much fun! Not just the power, the handling, the steering, the shifting, the sounds, all of it! Man, I'd forgotten what I was missing. Enough about that though, here's how everything went yesterday at Agile, and the real story about the car.

As everyone knows, Agile Auto is an extremely busy shop. I had made an appointment for August 15th or so to get my tune done. Unfortunately, the car had developed a serious idle issue, so the car couldn't be tuned that day. Hill and his crew used their free time over the next several weeks to diagnose the idle. From what I remember, the AFR was going from extremely rich to extremely lean just about every second. The MAF voltage was pretty much pinned, meaning that it wasn't the intake that was the problem. Anyway, after many different tests and alot of head scratching, the injectors were replaced (PE 650cc instead of the Helix which seemed to have issues with sealing)and the O2 sensor was replaced. At this point, Hill was confident that there were no other issues with the car, so he told me it was ready to tune. Too bad there were no openings in his schedule to get the tune done.

Annie came to the rescue and was able to sneak me in for yesterday morning. I worked out a ride to Agile for my wife and I, and I left work early to head out there. Turns out I had left work too late though, and I was going to be late, so I called Annie and told them to start without me. When I arrived, Hill informed me that the car was down on power (the gas in the car was from 2005...) and that I needed a new exhaust. Well, not needed, but I wasn't going to make any power with the stock midpipe and the Genome axle back. After the tune he re-emphasized this when he told me that he was nervous about getting too aggressive with the tune because of the back pressure in the exhaust and he shined a flashlight into my muffler to show how small it really is. He said I could easily see, with this tune, a 20whp increase from just a 3" catback. Maybe in time I'll decide to get that 3" exhaust and another tune, but right now I'm happy with what we came up with. What did we come up with you ask? Well, without divulging any numbers just yet, we came up with a 20G STi that feels like a V8 in the lower speeds. Third and fourth gear in this car are downright scary. The thrust is immediate when you depress the go pedal, and the 20G is at full boost of 19psi by 3500 or so. Hill gave me exactly what I was looking for while keeping the tune safe enough for my scarred psyche. As he said, there is still alot left on the table with this setup (if I change the exhaust) but for the time being I'm happy with the power levels.

Where are the numbers you ask? Without pulling out my dyno sheet they are 325/325. Like I said, a lot left on the table (80whp with an exhaust and tune doesn't sound out of line). If you think those numbers are low, come get a ride at the Subaru Challenge and you'll see why I'm extremely happy with this car!

I have to find my camera cable before I can upload the two pics and a couple vids that I remembered to take yesterday.

In other news, I picked up an 07 STi passenger seat and began converting it into an office chair last night. I should have that finished soon as well.

yeah yeah, I'll bet the goat is running strong now eh?

Well, the challenge was a blast and I got pretty burnt, but here's a couple shots of my car from the day. Of course, I didn't bring my own camera so I'm really just stealing other people's shots! 2 came from my dad, the rest from wrxtasy555 on NASIOC. Thanks to him!

Just kidding. As some of you know, I got a Buschur Racing catback, and here it is, as I removed it from the box.

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b175/MrHorhay/Scoob%20pics/IMG_2406.jpg

Yup, the newspaper pattern tip. Its the sweet new JDM trend. Whats really nice is that its a full 3" exhaust that is some 19lbs lighter than the stock exhaust. Here's a couple pics during the install.

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b175/MrHorhay/Scoob%20pics/IMG_2408.jpg
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b175/MrHorhay/Scoob%20pics/IMG_2409.jpg

I was a little surprised that it uses clamps instead of flanges, but it went together extremely well, and ended up with no leaks whatsoever. It also utilizes a different type of hanger, which helped us line up the exhaust a little bit more accurately. Here's the final pics, taken during a rainy night. They're fairly poor quality, but I'll get some better ones soon.

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b175/MrHorhay/Scoob%20pics/IMG_2413.jpg

I'm very happy. It looks very close to stock, but also has a very nice sound. Quite different from the GeNOME that I took off the car. It doesn't have nearly as much character as the GeNOME, but its also alot smoother. Like I said, I'm very happy.

I'll get some new pics and vids up as soon as I can.

Car looks great!
I know Hill pretty well. (also Xotic....lol). The car probably feels SOOOO good with that setup. i had a 20g with fmic and Hill got 355/350 out of her, but i know the area under the curve is SO important, esp for AX. A little more power now, but the 20g rocked. The bigger exhaust will def help.
BTW. Your previous idle issue was most likely from the front O2(a/f on sti's). No doubt. Especially if the maf V kept trying to compensate. Last week i dealt with same thing, for 3rd time. wtf. But the MaF was stable as a horse pissing on a flat rock. weird.

Well, I haven't updated here in a little while. The car is undergoing a bit of a makeover right now. I put on some 18" Rota Formula Mesh with 235/40/18 Kumho MX today. My WRC mirrors are in the mail from RavSpec, I'm working on buying a WRC style hood from a NASIOC member, and I'm waiting for the container holding my bodykit to arrive. My new shift boot and e-brake boot should arrive Tuesday.

Oh yeah. I painted the muffler black.

Here's some pics

Here's a pic of the hood I'm gonna be picking up on Friday. Its a WRC replica based on the Burn-Up hood. This one is made by shine auto project and is the only production one they've made.

I plan on having it painted to match the car but I'm not sure if I want to buy a CF scoop or find a more "authentic" WRX scoop and have it painted. Basically it comes down to full CF with STi scoop, all painted CGM, vs CF WRC hood with urethane WRX scoop, all painted CGM. Any thoughts?

Quick Sunday update.

Test fit of the hood was today. A couple of little issues but hey, this is the only hood they've made for the WRX and will probably be the only one they do make. First the good news, the hood fits on the car near perfectly and works with my Tein hood dampers. Thats a weight off my shoulders! Here's a couple pictures.

Without rain guard:

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b175/MrHorhay/Scoob%20pics/IMG_2711.jpg

Then the issues. Not that I didn't see these coming, just that I'll have to deal with them. First off, the scoop does not fit fully flush because the pegs do not fit all the way through the holes. I'm sure that will just take a little massaging to ensure a flush fit. Here's a picture of what I'm talking about.

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b175/MrHorhay/Scoob%20pics/IMG_2712.jpg

Secondly, the hood latch holes are too small for the stock bolts. That should just mean a quick trip to the local hardware store, except I'm not sure what size to get. That means it'll be several quick trips to the local hardware store...

Stock bolt, aftermarket hole:
