Upload failed due to failure writing temporary file.

I tried to finally put up a avatar picture and it said that. Yes its proper size, and it says teh same thing if i try to upload a pic to my profile as well.

upload it to another site and link the site to the upload - I was having a problem too and this did it.

upload it there and then link the upload in the avatar panel to the address it gives you

How much HDD space do you have?

It says it couldn't make the temporary file, so I'm guessing you don't have enough room. But, why you wouldn't have enough room for a little 50 kB pic file is beyond me.
