First of all I wanna thank Ray @ Turbo Tek Tuning, Andy @ Verocious Motorsports, Keith & Sal @ KG Parts, my wonderful girlfriend Becky for the support and the rides in her Lexus, Dave for his friendship and support of my car and has been there thru everything, and for the new friends I have made from TriStateTuners.com. I bought this car in October of 2004 used with 23,000 miles on her. She was a 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX 5spd. I traded in my Honda Civic towards this car. This was my first time purchasing an awd car. What I liked about the car especially was the paint job. The 2004 only Java Black Pearl! It wasn't until that March that I finally took the car to the track. I ran a 14.4 and from what I read that was the time you were supposed to run in this car completly stock. Having the craving for more power I put a turboback exhaust & boost controller on. The next time out I was able to run a 13.3 just before winter time. I always wanted to have a STi wing. I found a silver one for cheap and put it on the car. This is when the infamous silver trunk era began. I figured that would be the end of my modding for awhile except for a tune! I dynoed 243whp untuned.

While fooling around in the snow during the winter time. I somehow spun a rod bearing on my motor with only 40,000miles on her. With the mods done I did not want to settle for just another WRX motor. I wanted something different and rare. Something that would a smile on my face and keep it there! I started researching JDM STi motors! I like how the version 7 JDM STi motors came with forged internals and amazing heads that rev out to 8,000 rpm. After purchasing this motor I took my car over to Xotic Motorsports to have some other work done as well while the engine was being put in. I gave in to the temptation of the external wastegate and a tune! This will always be my favorite mod because of how it sounds and just how I just scare people while driving around. With the tune came 311whp and 292tq at 22psi on the stock vf30 included with the motor. I still retained using the stock 5 spd transmission and a SBC Clutch Kit because I couldn't afford the 6 spd manual of built tranny at the time! A week after getting the car tuned I got my best time ever of 12.4 @ 108mph. I was quite content with this time and power it had. I just felt a tranny and turbo upgrade would make the car complete down the road. I thought this time my modding would be done complete. Little did I know just a month and a half ago that would all change.

One day I was riding around after a rain storm and came around a blind turn and saw a big puddle at the last minute. One of the last mods I had on my car is the infamous CAI. I put the car in neuteral, but it was too late. The car threw a check engine almost immediately after hitting the puddle and ran rough all the way home. The next day I was riding to work and came around a turn and the car shut off on me. We had to pop start it to get it home. Once home I let the car dry out for three days and flushed out the oil and got her fired up and click click click it went. Another spun rod bearing. I just felt heartbroken after this. Soon after I called JDM-Online again to get another motor but at the same time Ray from Turbo Tek Tuning messaged me about wanting to help me out with getting parts. Little did I know how far this would go. Ray became very talkative with me and became a new friend to me and also my first offical Sponsor for my car. With that going for me we went ahead and went all out this time! First thing to be ordered was the motor from JDM-Online, this time with the 6 spd transmission. Next was the go fast goodies from Turbo Tek Tuning. Perrin products were ordered, including GT30R, FMIC, and Intake. Other parts ordered at the time were Subaru 4-Pot front calipers, Hawk HPS Brake Pads, Powerslot Slotted Front Rotors, SBC Clutch Kit, and PE 850cc Injectors. Once again the car was towed over to Xotic Motorsports to Andy! Andy in the past had did most of the work to the car and there is no one else I trust with the life of my car except for Andy! Also while Andy was putting these parts in, Ray and I put some of the rearend in. Andy and I put the motor and the rest of the drivetrain in, as well as the braking system. Just before I brought the car to him I picked up a set of Corbeau Forza seats for pretty cheap. He did a little custom work while I was at that with making a straight thru mid-pipe and custom dump tube for the external wastegate in the Perrin Turbo kit. Before the car was complete Andy realized that I was missing a piece of intercooler piping. So that put off getting the car done for a few more days. Once we had that in we started her up only to realize that this motor like the last had a bad IAC valve. So I had to order a brand new one which set us back another 4 days total between diagnosing it and waiting for the part to come in. Once we had the IAC in the car ran great. Besides needing a tune. Andy said to get 500miles on her and call him when I achieve that and we would tune the car. That wouldn't be the last time I'd see him. Little did I know what was in store for me.
Four days past and I had just about 450miles on her when I came out to start her and she cranked over like her timing was off. It would start up and immediately shut off. Not wanting to mess around with it I called up Andy the next day and told him my problem. He told me to get the car towed to him that day and he would take a look at it. Which brings us up to today. Andy did a compression test and leakdown test on the car and turns out that cylinders 1 and 3 are bad. As well as oil was soaking the maf sensor. What Andy believes what happened was coolant might have been laying on top of those cylinders from sitting and/or shipping and just wore at the piston rings. Oil was passing thru the cylinders only on the passenger side. I went out there three days ago and did a compression test on video that I'm sending up to JDM-Online for proof of what happened and they will let me know what they are going to do.
My goals for the car are 400+whp on 93 pump gas and 500+whp on C16 race gas. Time wise I'm looking at 10's.

huff also forgot about his weight reduction, see the car had about 500 punds of sand underneath of it from docking the jet ski. nothing like installing a rear and having all that sand fall in your eyes and everything else. when i got home the one night, my wife asked if i was at the beach because there was sand all over me.

that sucks man! I've heard of another person with a similar problem w/ a jdm motor. I hope everything works out for ya

Not right now it isn't. I should start my motor swap in a month or two, so before spring hits we should be around the same power, except he will have a high reving 2.0L and I will have a 2.5L torque monster!

I gotta call them back monday and they will have a solution for me. Its obvious what the solution is...send me another motor because its still under warranty. Honestly I'm strongly thinking about those Rotas!!

i think Beans had an sti short block on ebay afew weeks ago damaged in shipping. Went for like $1250! only dammage was dowls. New SB at a great price. Thats what you got? I was bidding on it also. ps, should have did this in the first place. I could think of at least a dozen potential problems with a used jdm clip. your car is gona be awesome.

I got rid of that wing and trunk a long time ago!! I got my old dented WRX trunk minus the wrx wing on there right now! I'm loving wingless but i'm leaning towards a S203 Wing in carbon fiber and carbon fiber trunk!

Well great news! I just picked up the car today and she runs beautifully! I got 130 miles on her of the 1000 needed before tuning! Going to get the miles on as fast as i can then go back for my race gas and street gas tune! She feels like a monster up to 5000rpm at only qtr throttle! Can't wait to open her up!! I thank those whose have supported this project from the beginning!!

As of today...I'm still burning a lot of oil. Checked the turbo...no shaft play or oil anywhere around the turbo. Tonight or tomorrow I'm upgrading the oil to 10w40 and see what happens and checking to make sure the restrictor pill is in the oil feed line. That is all for now. Otherwise its running beautifully!

duuuude. stop. while you're stopped, think. your motor is not right, and putting a more viscous oil into it isnt going to work a miracle here. what kind of motor goes through 2 quarts of any kind of oil? suck it up and tear it down and see what went wrong. you can only be making it worse by putting off the problem and continuing to drive it like this.

Hey man did you check that oil send line for the restrictor pill yet? It was in there the whole time I was working with it, but in the off chance that it somehow fell out just before I installed it back into the turbo... It's worth taking a look at (five minuted and an 11mm wrench its worth it)
Let me know what happens, check that thing asap.

There were pebbles of cylinder rings and the motor had crankwalk I believe. A few people were saying the thrust bearing went and the crank just started to jiggle around.

how does the 257/207 combo have a 9.6:1 compression ratio? thats higher than i calculated was possible unless his pistons are custom but i dont think they are.

D- With that much compression the timing had to be fairly conservative. With race fuel however, it should make some seriously sick power (around 475whp)
troll- You are right about the 207/257, but Huff has V7 heads which are only 49cc's. The 9.6 is approximate, but it is definitely over 9.4.
Andy left the boost at 21psi.
Wait until you hear it, you can tell it is a higher compression motor :devil:

9* of timing at peak torque and 20* at 7300rpm. I would not say that is excessive in any way for making the power that it is. A 30r on a straight 257 motor I normaly end up with about 4-5* more timing across the entire rpm range at 22-23psi.
Boost has never hurt a motor and it never will. Detonation is what hurts motors.
Cylinder pressure is what makes horsepower and there are lots of different ways to increase cylinder pressure. Higher compression, more ignition advance, different camshafts and higher boost levels will all increase cylinder pressure. All of these factors must be accounted for while tuning. I like to think about it like simple math. Lets say we want to get to 10, 2+5+3=10, 3+3+4=10, 2+2+6=10, 1+1+8=10. There was 4 different ways to get to 10 using different values, now is any one of those ways to 10 wrong? No. So if you want to get to 380 whp there are a few different ways to get there. You can run 8.2:1 comp, 24* peak timing and 22psi of boost, or you can run 8.2:1 comp, 22* peak timing and 23psi of boost, or how about 9.2:1 comp, 20* peak timing and 21psi of boost.

i dont really consider his motor to be "built motor", i might be wrong but i thought it was a stock sti block with v7 heads.. i consider built to be pistons, rods, etc.... so for the motor and turbo i think its where it should be powerwise.

d, the pistons were in the last motor, this is a 07 sti block maybe 06 with i think the v7 heads.

Well I haven't posted on my journal in awhile. I'll be heading back to Verocious Motorsports on the 22nd of this month for a race gas tune and something else! :devil: Car has been running beautifully. So far with this hot weather I've run a 12.03@116 with a 1.69 60'. I'll be racing the 23rd to get use to the new setup. Def. doing an oil change and hopefully getting new plugs in before the tune.

or maybe go with a 2.2 stroker kit. the possibilities are endless with these things. but bottom line it has to be my DD so im gonna do the reliable thing first and foremost. believe me fellas u will all be hearing from me in the future for spare parts, **** u dont need no more, wheels, spoilers, ecu's w/e the hell u got that u dont want no more hahaha. **** im tryna save w/e dollars i can here.

Just another update! I'm heading over to Shades of Gray Tinting today for 30% all around. Also doing an oil change, changing spark plugs, Perrin Shifter Bushings, & Thermocool wrap tonight! Friday i'm custom making a vent in place of the hood scoop to reduce drag! Should be a busy week for me!
